Hey Dr. Greg, I swish water in my mouth after eating and drinking to neutralize that acids does it stop the 20-30 minute acid attack? Or should I still wait then brush? Thank you
I had zero cavities until age 21. I brushed my teeth 3 times a day. Morning, afternoon, and night before sleep. Every single day! Flossing every other day, and mouth wash twice a week
Studies have shown using a mouthwash after eating can neutralize the acids and give a higher ph in the mouth. So it would be safe to brush afterwards. So i use a wash first, then brush.
I wish you mentioned Invisalign a little bit more, I love your channel and I’ve learned so much but I find myself missing the information specifically for people with Invisalign. I’m about half way through my treatment, can I join the braces club?? ❤️❤️
So how does this mesh with Invisalign? Waiting for 30 minutes every time would make it hard to reach the recommended wear time. Is using a waterpik really enough when you are risking trapping stuff in your trays by not brushing? I think I'll be able to avoid the super acidic stuff for the time of my treatment to avoid the issue altogether, but how bad are coffee or tomato sauce?
There are pros and cons to all options, including brushing before, right after, and 30 minutes after. The downside to waiting 30 minutes is the bad bacteria in your mouth will ravage your teeth until the minerals go back in place. After all my research, brushing right after you eat, lightly, with a non-abrasive toothpaste is the most ideal. The fluoride in the toothpaste will help the minerals settle down faster and stronger. Rinsing with a high-fluoride mouthwash can also help. Brushing before you eat gives plaque and bacteria more room to form and waiting 30 minutes also gives bacteria more room to form. There really is no winning lol. It depends on your diet too. But brushing right after you eat can be totally safe under the right conditions with the right products.

To be honest I don't believe that? And another question: How often do you recommend using mouthwash? Is it something that people should do on daily basis? Because I've heard that it isn't good for your teeth / it would get more yellow after a period of time? It would be interesting to see what you have to say about those "rumors" :D
One time I thought I should brush more often but the only thing it did was damage my gums, fortunately it's back to normal now. I only brush my teeth once a day before going to sleep, I have the most healthy teeth in my whole family so clearly it works for me.

since i've had braces, i brush my teeth without paste after each meal (except in the morning and before I go to bed) does brushing your teeth right after each meal without paste have the same effect as to what you mentioned in the video?
I brush after breakfast, lunch and dinner but one question, if i eat sugar what is more indicated to do next? Use waterpik and then wait 20 to 30 min to brush brush right after eating sugar?
Waiting for 30 minutes to brush my teeth after breakfast, lunch, and dinner seems very time consuming. Can I rinse out my mouth with water between brushings instead?
Dr Greg, thanks for your good video. Is it acceptable to use a fluoride mouthwash after meals? Every morning I have 2 slices of brown bread and 1 egg. As you would know, the egg doesn't have the best odour. So I every morning use mouthwash after eating. Is that fine? Thanks
Three times a day, all after eating. I just started wearing braces and thought I had to clean after eating to prevent cavities. I feel so demineralised right now 😭
The main factors for a tooth cavity are food, bacteria and time. So-called the acidic condition is come from the process that bacteria (especially anaerobes) decomposed carbohydrate within the food and gradually transformed to acidic product. If we can remove any one of these 3 factors, caries won't happen. After all, we cannot eat nothing or get rid of all the anaerobes in our mouth, but at least we can reduce the existing time of the food debris, and that is what I thought about why have to brushing teeth in time. Maybe the enamel structure could be soften in the acidic condition, I don't think it will get destruction easily by brushing teeth, because the grinding force while chewing may greater than the brushing force.
Thanks for the video! Big question: I just bought a Waterpik because I've relied on sugarless gum after meals, now can't tolerate anything sugarish... I need something for after meals, beyond rinsing with water. Is it safe to use a waterpik immediately after a meal, at low pressure? Or could it damage the remineralizing enamel? (p.s. I manually floss daily, religiously and will continue to. Also, I don't have braces, do have some gum recession.) Thanks!

Your videos help me so much, thanks!
Can u do a video on what toothpaste to use for braces??
Thanks
alright I’m even more paranoid 😩

Thank u so much Doc, i have been brushing my teeth after food. Now because of your help, i will not do that and will listen to your advice. Thanks!
1:53 THERE Y'ALL GO YW
I love how I just brushed my teeth after I ate 🥲
fluoride shouldn’t be in the water, i like he mentions when you have it in/on your teeth.
Awesome videos, you've been extremely helpful
Your videos are super helpful thank you :)
Can you make a video on how to repair your tooth enamel?
Enamel cannot be repaired. Dentist can put a filling, a veneer or a crown instead of missing enamel.
