Inside a wafer-thin USB powerbank.

- When I saw this powerbank I had to get it, purely because it was so thin. I did another test on its performance and it barely manages to put out 1A at 4V before cutting out, so probably better suited to lower loads, but not too low or it goes into standby. This makes its use as a powerbank a bit limited.
On a plus note, the unit came with a decent charge already in it, probably because of its low load standby function.
I'd rather it had been the simpler type that puts out 5V all the time and just keeps it topped up to meet demand. That would make it useful for powering very low loads like lights.
It does have full secondary battery protection that doesn't rely on the boost chip.

How about a tour of your workshop Clive ?
No one wants to show anyone else their workshop
Watch RODALCO2007's workshop/house tour video... Clive has nothing to fear about clutter. Ray has the most understanding wife on earth to have operating electrical service meters on the walls of the bedroom and ballast transformers, wires, sodium lamps and photocells from streetlights on the dining room table as they are eating lunch. Absolutely awesome!!!
TacticalBBQSauce I wouldn’t mind seeing his workshop
My parents are hoarders... I have seen it all, it can't be that bad...
You should see Jim Williams bench! www.computerhistory.org/atchm/an-analog-life-remembering-jim-williams/
I have had some luck with using dental floss to slice between a glued lithium cell and the case. Try it sometime. My daughter suggested it after having witnessed me cutting cinnamon roll dough with dental floss and also running out of the house with a thermonuclear iPhone/battery. The next iPhone I worked on, she said, "Hey Dad, maybe you should use dental floss." It worked!.
John Cuzzourt
I use a water pik - do you think that would work? 😜
Or piece of cord soaked in a bit of isopropyl if you don't have floss laying around.
Why don't you want people seeing your workshop? You using all those LED lights to grow weed? :P
Just the huge cluttered mess typical of most industrious workshops.
I can give you lots of advice on plastic storage boxes. Been going through this pain for over a year. Best and cheapest place to find them is at Bunnings. But I think HQ has shut down their disastrous foray into the UK.
Tidy your bench then you won't feel embarrassed to show it on video.
Gary Rumain
Yes, Wesfarmers has sold Bunnings to an investment company which is going to reverse the rebranding of the 20, or so, stores back to Homebase (in line with the rest of the stores) as it has an established reputation here in the UK. I believe they may well close some of the least profitable stores as well.
Gary Rumain g'day fellow Aussie lol
"And so you can't see my workshop..." he says.
Then shows everyone the workshop anyway.
You ought to do a tour of your workship, Clive! I'd love to see it!
i may not fully understand all of the logic circuits you talk about but your videos are still inspiring. currently working on a tabletop laser engraver based off of photos of a chinese one using parts I've 3d printed. the availability of arduino/stepper driver controllers is something i never dreamed of when I was younger
Oh Clive, don't you know? A clean desk is a sure sign of...
Insanity!
The cool thing about the thumb nail picture for this video is, it looks like there is a nice neat hole cut into Clive's bench.
hi clive
clutter is good its a sign of been busy
and yes a tour of your workshop please
As cluttered as the shop may be I'm willing to bet you know exactly where everything is.
Techy Dog
Yes, it's in that pile of stuff over there!
Yup. I can go straight to almost anything.
"wafer thin" with a French accent - SUPERB!!!
So THAT's what Mr. Creosote ate that made him explode... :P
It's just one Wafer Thin "Mint"
Everyone asking for a workshop tour clearly doesn't have a workshop haha. The workshop is a private place, not something to be shown off and I'm sure like every other workshop there's not going to be that much interesting stuff going on
Pretty much every picture I have ever taken in my shed has been in the same corner, it's the only place that looks half decent and not filled with random projects or crap.
Unless you’re a certain Canuck by name of AvE. That man gives zero fucks.
He cheats and just never shows the face that owns the clutter.
There once was a cunikistan man,
Whose garage was much like a trash can,
The sight of his face, to us he'd not grace,
He's probably in ku klux klan
I don't know why but your videos are very satisfying.
56000 views that would fill a very big stadium , well done
4:06 . . . Clive is now speaking dentist language: "That's unpleasant, that's very unpleasant."
You mentioning where you got this power bank sent me on a renewed search for information on my grandfather. He was from Douglas.
The cell was a lot more generous than I was expecting. Thought it would be something tiny taking up next to no space.
It does test as a full 2000mAh cell.
Yay, a power bank video!
Fishing line might help with separating glued surfaces. We use it to shave logos off cars while protecting the paint
I don't understand some of the electrical terms but I love watching your videos 😊👍👍👍👍
Did i hear a touch of monty python? Just a waffer thin :-D
Perhaps a little Mr Creosote reference.
At least not of the exploding kind, this time
I would say that seems a really bad chip design if it brutally cuts out both high and low loads. And that lid should have been glued to the case, not the battery to avoid causing "explosive" battery damage.
John Francis Doe
I don't think the design is any more likely to cause explosive battery damage than many modern mobile phones. If you look carefully there are supports on the plastic side of the case to help prevent a squashed battery, although the metal mirror is relatively thin and therefore quite flexible so wouldn't prevent extreme pressure from probably causing some damage.
I think it's actually even safer to glue the lid to the battery. If something goes wrong -- or the battery is just getting fatigued -- there is nothing to keep the battery from bulging, so you get a visual indication of a soon-to-come fault rather than a time bomb.
swiss
Good point.
All of your video’s are so enjoyable to watch 😊
Thanks again.
Modern technology is amazing.
i'm more impressed that it's so thing and a circle
Unless I missed it, I don’t believe you mentioned the cost as you do most of the time. Just curious.
£10.
lol, right as the text on the display cut off the sirens started their test run here. And for a few seconds I was so confused, as if you played that through the video xD
Now that will be perfect for my handbag...
You might like to visit the electronics market in Shenzhen at some point, and see all about these interesting and weird components. Maybe go with Scotty. That'd be cool to watch I think :)
Your bench is cleaner than my desk, lol
Finally monsieur, a wafer thin mint
Big Clive Shop Tour - We don't mind the clutter, did you know that's often a sign of a genius; at least that's what I tell myself about my shop & bench lol.... I'd bet all of your viewers would love to see a shop tour (tools, test equipment, parts trays etc)... Let's have a vote, anyone that would like to see a 'Big Clive Shop Tour' give this comment a like & Clive will get the hint.
Dan S
Maybe you can start us off with a tour of yours?!
I'm the smartest man alive!
Why?
Blox117 ,In his tiny mind, I'm sure it does.
"oh come on monsieur it's only wafer thin"
Nic White while running and diving over a planter
Another bucket.....
No fuck off I'm full
"Just a little wafer"
Those charging lead are terrible, not only they usually made of aluminium for cheaped out but they also don't have the 2 data pins which most phone use to identify the current capability of the charger and just assume it's a low current one so it just charge at 500mA
SandPox
Most Android devices will ramp up until the voltage drops. They usually don't worry about the data pins. The crap 2 wire cables usually stop around 500mA because they're so thin they drop the voltage real fast.
The missing data lines is why they stress charging only. I bin any cables we get that say that so as not to pollute the cables we know actually have all their parts. If you cheap out that much, I am apt to not trust anything in your cable.
These videos are so relaxing
I think when Clive reaches 378,000 subscribers, it would be awesome to celebrate with a shop tour video!
You need to get a heat plate for tear downs. A little warmth really helps loosen the glue
Love the recording setup! :)
a tour of the w/shop would be nice
I want to see more flames and danger, Clive! :)
Always admirable of your faith in the explosion-containment properties of an open topped metal dish. OTOH, how else would we see the cause of your dramatic demise?
That's not clutter. That's a workbench that's seen serious use. You probably know exactly where everything is.
Your hand made a Big C in this video
Nice teardown 👌 would be cool to also have a scope on the output to see how noisy the output is 😊
You should try the dry ice method next time you run into glued battery shenanigans
You can never have too much dry ice. If only I could find a source…
Clive you can cut the extended adhesive threads and this'll go way smoother.
THAT'S A PRETTY THICK WAFER! I WOULDN'T WANT ONE OF THOSE IN MY ICE-CREAM!
Thanks Clive; it's neat, and quite well made.
Can you review some recent 2A rated units for us please? Too many of these power banks are limited to 1A, and a lot of devices today require 2 Amps to charge correctly. Thanks again.
There are spudgers with fairly robust plastic tips. It might be less exciting to use that kind when poking around lithium cells.
Usually I drip some isopropyl alcohol on the sticky bits to loosen them. Bonus fact: keeps you finger cool :)
Clutter almost as bad as my bedroom!
Remember kids, a clean work bench, is a work bench not in use.
"whiffer thin"
katie_incredible but sir, it is waffffer thin
Oh ok *waiter runs*
*explodes*
*sees thumbnail*
Thats clearly an oreo
Please try to find and test a Power Bank with USB type C and have output at least 3A.
:)
One more example of the Chinesium Rating system. Subtract a Zero and your in the ball park.
UPS for a Raspberry Pi? Great idea as long as the RPi doesn't flake out on the lower voltage and somehow corrupt the data on the MicroSD card. I have 2 RPi 3's and not fun when you need a specific power supply because the "USB Standard" is not good enough. Why did they even bother to use a USB connector for power? Nice idea to get 2 power banks for the 2 separate circuits so you can charge-and-go.
the last time I wanted a litium cell I wanted to get one out of a powerbank, the result was that I had to cut open a aluminium enclosure remove the curcuit with brute force and use a pen to push the cells out. The result was that one of the cells ripped open because it was clued to the enclosure, eventhought I cuted away the glue with a thin knife.
The really don't want you to get to those cells.
What do you like about it? It doesn't keep voltage with load and shuts off at 800mA. I'd much rather grab the Poundland one. It just seems better in every way
The only good thing is it's slim housing, but it would be nicer with a dumb circuit like the Poundland ones that just bang out 5V all the time and top it up as needed.
2:27 "it's a bit delicate" - what a nice way of saying that this gadget is crappy as hell....
I'm with you on LCDs with recessed screens being annoying. I had an older android car stereo that had its screen recessed about a half inch from the bezel, and when mounted in the car it meant it obstructed about an inch off the top and left of the screen when sitting in the driver's seat in a normal position :(
Also: "LCD Display" = Liquid Crystal Display Display
Makes me laugh when people say it.
Same as when people talk about how the space shuttle had SRB Boosters.
Solid Rocket Booster Boosters!
You 'd expect by now that bezels would either thin out as they approach an LCD, or be otherwise engineered to pipe ambient light into the edge of the glass…
Clive, this round form gives me an idea - can we make really "circle" handmade charger - by not using the square battery? The first comes to the mind is like a dozen batteries in form of pie slices which making a perfect round, but it's hard to make handmade. The easiest is to put a many small tablet type lithium batteries which already in a form of circle, how many - 20, 30 in series?
I don't think the combined capacity would match up to the mass of a traditional square block cell. It would also be much more expensive to manufacture.
Today it's my birthday! 4th of June! And I'm happy as ever watching you, Clive!
Yay!
Haha "waafer thin"! Nice reference to one of Monty Python's gnarliest scenes.
That kind of glue gives up when a few drops of lighter fuel are used. I sometimes call it sticker glue.
It's not outrageous, it's home.
It's not a outrage, it's home.
You can't use a power bank for a raspberry pi since power banks output 5v and my raspberry pi requires 3.4v the power bank would kill it
The sleeping mode ones are the absolute worst ..
Completely (almost) unrelated, I just got a YZX Studio ZY1276, way pricier than the ruindeng ones (48$), but with a much cleaner UI, they also have a ridiculous resolution
3:30 a drop of isopropanol and it'd come right off 🤘
Before it drops too low it's only like 300mA, terrible...
But mechanical design quite good actually.
@bigclivedotcom do you encode your videos in a special way? I can hear your voice on the center speaker of my 5.1 setup.
I think it's a problem with some surround sound processors interpreting my dual channel mono with a bassy voice as a bass track.
I am surprised at how fussy the thing is with a load.. That battery pack is pretty decent size so should have some decent mAh for what it is designed for. Is there a way to modify the thing to not cut out or sleep so easily?
It's built into the chip, which is annoying.
Clive have you seen this trend of people with beardstaking selfies whilst looking at the ceiling?
I want to know how a mist water nozzle works.. atomizer/diffuser.. can you make a video?
You didnt show the coil transmitter aerial
you film with a motoG4? nice! if that gives this quality then I defenetly can do the same with mine for videos
Big Clive and a Monty Python reference? A really gross Monty Python scene...
Maitre D with a terrible fake French accent: And finally, monsieur, a wafer-thin mint.
Mr Creosote: No.
Maitre D: Oh sir! It's only a tiny little thin one.
Mr Creosote: No. Fuck off - I'm full... [Belches]
Maitre D: Oh sir... it's only wafer thin.
Mr Creosote: Look - I couldn't eat another thing. I'm absolutely stuffed. Bugger off.
Maitre D: Oh sir, just... just one...
Mr Creosote: Oh all right. Just one.
Maitre D: Just the one, sir... voila... bon appetit...
[Mr Creosote somehow manages to stuff the wafer-thin mint into his mouth and then swallows. The Maitre D takes a flying leap and cowers behind some potted plants. There is an ominous splitting sound. Mr Creosote looks rather helpless and then he explodes, covering waiters, diners, and technicians in a truly horrendous mix of half digested food, entrails and parts of his body. People start vomiting.]
Maitre D: [returns to Mr Creosote's table] Thank you, sir, and now the check.
Yeah tour, please
lol you can hear the transformer buzzing from the soldering station when the soldering irons on mine is the same one and it dose the same
but mine dosnt go on then off it gose on by pulsing then gose off then repeats
Heat plus a Bear = not a good idea , silly Clive don`t you know Bears are to be kept cool at all times preferably refrigerated to keep from spoiling
Hi Clive, where did you purchase your USB tester? Thanks, Andrew
Just a quick question. I work as maintenance manager in care home. We have small circle ceiling lights and some do not work. Changed starter and lamp but to no avail. They have ballasts, can they be repaired? Can't wait for electrician to get round to sorting out basically. We have zones on trip board so can isolate power when removing. Also have Dave's bm235 meter so can double check if electric is present before removal. Love the accent at start. Should do a small vid with accent. I know you like your lights. Thanks. I might film it at work tomorrow see if I can repair one. Not sure if they are sealed??
Sorry. Changed comment clive. Thanks for reply. I partly read it.
Sorry Clive could you post link again? Thanks.
ruclips.net/video/qLaD11LITbQ/видео.html
bigclivedotcom thanks
looked like it's happiest at half an amp, half the rated output is commonl for power supplies, unfourtunately.
Wokbenches are supposed to be cluttered. That's how you know where things are. Give us a tour with accent lol. I'm sure it's not that bad??
Clive please show us ALL your clutter prettyplease :)
How about BigClive visits Shenzen. Would pay for that.
Walter Zanon that would be awesome
I would like to visit the industrial parts of China in the future.
High Clive, maybe you can help me I'm looking for a powerbank that gives output even when charging.
All banks I got switch off output if charging.
Thnx
Kinda like the way they made the USB connection.
There are comments here dated 4 days ago, but the published date of the video is today?
Josh Zwies
Have you never heard of Patreon?
Josh Zwies Have you ever heard of Big Clive's' time machine?
Thanks man :)
What's the battery mAh rating ?
Looks like 2,000 mAh :)
( had to switch to HD to see it )
It is 2000mAh and tested out OK.
Clive, you need to wear gloves... not for this video in particular, but your hands continue to take a beating. Mark my words that it doesn't seem like a problem now but as you get older, that wear on them adds up. Trust me you don't want to be old and hate using your hands.
Stinky Cheese Sir, i'm over 70 yrs old , I've worked as a mechanic on heavy plant ,heavy goods, cars, 4x4, worked on farms, a few years as a builder, and a variety of outdoor manual jobs , all hard on the hands , and yet my hands are in excellent shape ,big and a bit battered yes, but pain free, wish i could say the same about the rest of me. 😀
Capacity should be measured in Wh or J, not in Ah. The latter is useless because the voltage varies.
plemli It's correct to measure cell or battery capacity in Ah, as that is a reasonable representation of how long a cell or battery can deliver current (within a specified range) to a load. Most cells or batteries have a fairly constant voltage across their useable range within the specified discharge current range. The problem is that once you add a DC/DC converter, to boost the output voltage, not only is the output current different to the discharge current from the cell or battery, but you have losses in the DC/DC converter. And worse, these conversion losses are likely to be different at different current outputs. This then makes the advertised Ah figure very misleading.
Cell capacity, fine. It's with batteries (typically when cells are in series) when things get iffy. Also, as you say, when voltage conversion is involved. As plemli says, actual energy capacity would be better. It is, in fact, how the batteries on my Lenovo laptop are measured.
Chaos Corner You have to take both the capacity in Ah AND the voltage into account where there is more than one cell. For example, if you have three 2V 5Ah cells, they can be connected as a battery with the cells in series, in which case the battery is now rated at 6V 5Ah. Or the three 2V 5Ah cells can be connected in parallel, you now have a 2V 15Ah battery.
Mark, exactly. But you don't have to worry about that if you express it as energy capacity. 5000J is 5000J whether that's at 4.2V, 5V or 12.6V. If you're really worried about time, as Plemli says, you can use Wh.
I agree that what most people understand capacity to mean is the energy capacity in Wh. The term capacity is slightly ambiguous. It can mean the charge capacity in Ah or the energy capacity in Wh.
Why do some batt packs cut out on low current demand? Is it simply that the circuit would otherwise go over-voltage? I bought one to power my little aux speakers. They have class D amps, no doubt, and draw very low current in periods of silence. Good! Except I have to manually reset the batt if the soundtrack goes very quiet for 20 seconds! Happily I have another batt that doesn't care.
It's to reduce the standby current. They detect when the device being charged has stopped drawing current and turn themselves off until a load is detected again.
What does the flashlight taste like?
as soon as I saw the name of the video even before it started playing I also said it "waffer theen"
Did you beep test the reflective lid?
Not only shitty iphone batteries are glued in, most phones, tablet and some laptops are glued in.
Is that key-chain light a surefire sidekick?
It's a Nitecore Tip. (I made a video about it.)
