So the D&D OGL drama got here too. Lewis makes valid points regarding WotC and Hasbro and them wanting to monopolize the TTRPG market, but I have to disagree with the rant on the system itself. Before Hasbro bought WotC and commenced the downward spiral, 5e was regarded worldwide as one of, and maybe the best edition to play D&D. Otherwise it wouldn't have got so popular (see 4th edition as a comparison). The rules got massively simpler since older editions and they are just as complex as other similar systems (see Pathfinder 1e, which is basically a D&D 3.5 spin-off). Now each system has its own particularities and is great in its own way, but you can't just disregard the updates that the rules of D&D got throughout the years, which culminated with the current 5th edition ruleset. It is not perfect, but it's better. The whole OGL thing that's going on has nothing to do with the system, but with the way it is allowed to be used by 3rd parties. The popularity of D&D is in most part thanks to the amazing community of third party creators that contributed to building it and this stands as a statement to the availability and versatility of the rules themselves. #OpenDnD

I don't think thats really fair. It's definitely true that 5e has made D&D much more popular but it doesn't follow that it is the best system. What is really great about 5e is that it has lowered the barriers to entry for new players compared to older editions. Combined with some clever marketing and the emergence of hugely successful podcasts, it has been great for growing the TTRPG community. But, that's only an indicator of how marketable the system is. A good system provides good tools and mechanics for whatever the game does. 5e is an okay system but its got some major problems, especially with providing DMs mechanics and tools to improvise and create home-brew. I think it was a better game when it came out, but with how creative games have been in the indie space since then, it would never be my first choice for any style of game. Also community engagement is a huge part of D&D's success, but the OGL doesn't really matter for that. Nothing about the system or premise of D&D is copyrightable in the first place. I honestly hope that WotC start enforcing their IP so that everyone realizes they can do everything they love about TTRPGs without relying on WotC, try some different systems, make a home-brew setting.

So Star Trek trading with the federation works like this (vague memory from episodes), if they need something from you, they give you advanced materials that you can't just replicate if you want that, or they give you an IOU for a federation favor (construction help, lesser valued technology, diplomatic assistance, protection, etc.)
If they have something that you want, they normally first bargain for treaties or to advance diplomacy, otherwise it's other rare materials, but in most episodes it tends to be diplomacy

Since replicators can produce any material things that people need then the only resource that has any value is the energy required to run the replicators; that is the currency, energy credits. Externally, the Federation barters with information and diplomatic standing more often than not.

I disagree. Lewis's complaint is that he wants 12 flavors, but D&D only provides 3. If everyone only plays dnd that shuts out other playstyles and ideas that are hard for dnd to implement. People like to think dnd could be used for everything, but it's really only good at being a zero to hero monster slayer game. Dnd's rules and mechanics are all centered on combat, which is why it's a good fighting game. Call of Cthulhu on the other hand is a classless and levelless system where there's very little combat, and the rules primarily focus on clue solving and social encounters.
There's other stuff out there and Lewis isn't interested in the dominant go-to system that everyone is already familiar with.

5e is great, its really simple to get into, the min maxing is potentially nutty. and the simulation part of it is a bit less than 3.5/pathfinder.
5e did away with a lot of dumb rules bloat. You can make characters, play and have 3 to 4 encounters, all within like 5 hours, if you are an experienced DM (I know, I just recently ran a session with 3/4s being total noobs to RP in general).
It does suffer from basically 90% of races having dark vision or some other op power. but restrict new players to simple races, preferably humans. Heck I made it so Dark vision did not exist in my campaign, because it kind ruins light as a mechanic.
But DnD rules are meant as a guideline of rules, where you take and leave and add what you want, or what you think makes it more interesting.
Basically Lewis just really hates Hasbro, understandable, and doesn't want to play DnD. but will still play Blizzard Products, despite BLIZ CEO's literally making a lady khs.

  • @colebotman
    @colebotman 2 года назад +7

For full context, 5e is a pretty solid system - quite simple and good at the core experience. However, with Hasbro's recent actions to try and monopolize tabletop gaming by de-authorizing the Open Games License (the thing that allowed fans to 3rd party publish and create podcasts - basically made dnd into what it is today), things are messy.
On top of that, the recent string of pretty uninspiring, hard to run 5e adventure books. They've reused art from Magic the Gathering art constantly (without re-paying the artists, mind you), released a book of monsters we already had and marketed it as something new, resurrected Spelljammer with little to no new rules (ship combat is atrocious), and much, much more.
This, ON TOP OF Wizards of the Coast including harmful stereotypes (and when people complained, they simply REMOVED a huge chunk of lore for said races instead of professionally conversing about dated terminology) and a player race whose sole trait is "that they were slaves," its become increasingly difficult to want to support their products. Especially when we have confirmed insider employees stating that those in charge literally see the community as "in the way of their own money being given to us."
People, Wizards/Hasbro included, have realized that the community has made far better, more interesting content than is far less problematic. That's why Hasbro decided to crack down, because they know their own products simply can't compete. They know that they've been trying to sell players next to nothing and wait for them to fix it or ignore the problems.
5e is excellent and simple. People who still play it have turned it into their own game at this point by modifying it - which is great. From my perspective, I'm a bit tired of having to create a better game myself for Hasbro. I'd much rather have a fully tested and enjoyable system that I know works, and one that suits the thematic kind of game I want to play. 5e can do dungeons and it sure can do dragons - but modding it into an entirely different system is like modding Skyrim to be Alien Isolation - you COULD just PLAY a far better, actual game like Alien Isolation. Dnd 5e struggles to convey horror, for example, so modding it to do horror results in a less engaging experience, compared to systems DESIGNED for horror (like the Alien RPG!).
5e will always be cool. There's nothing wrong with playing it and people stick with it. But there's different, more fun systems to accomplish topics and themes that you don't have to mod in yourself to enjoy. There's nothing wrong with trying these systems out - especially one like Pathfinder 2e, which has all of its rules available free online, made by a company that's unionized, working to correct industry problems, and writing kickass books that have incredible representation and commentary on real world issues. Or, you know, hundreds of other systems like Blades in the Dark, Call of Cthulu, etc. - all for different flavors of game for different styles of play.

So lewis is right with d&d, there is alot of different better systems! Especially with the new Open Game License (OGL), the system as read is bad and requires someone to be pretty skilled and knowledge to teach others how to play and how different stuff (classes, spells, monsters) interact. I would love to watch Lewis run a Table Top RPG campaign.
    Lewis.
I may be able summarize D&D for Pyrion.
    - D&D is not shit
    - D&D is a Heroic Fantasy Role playing game at its core. You party up and get stronger as a party.
    - D&D 5e mechanics are relatively streamlined and easy to get into especially if you play modern computer RPG's
    - 80% of the mechanics of the game are in regards to combat and there can be slight friction when jumping between narrative and combat encounters.
    - D&D asks alot out of the Dungeon Master in terms of prep and things to keep track.
    - D&D gets better with experience but can get bogged down while people are learning the system.
    - D&D is not ideal if you want more agency per individual player, majority of the time going solo gets you killed.
    (never split the party)
As some one who has played and ran years of D&D and other Indie TTRPG's
TTRPG's should have mechanics and rules that support the story or game you are trying to play, therefore if you want high fantasy combat focused game D&D is there for you.
    examples
Noir Lovecraftian horror= Call of Cthulu.
Post Apocalyptical Narrative driven= Apocalypse World. (poweredbyapocalypse)
A group of Mice patrolling and having heartfelt comradery= Mouseguard.
D&D being vastly more popular that its competitors makes people default to D&D as a base system which you CAN do but takes work and effort to make happen.
Majority of people want to watch and play what's popular and what they know rather than looking for other systems that may be better for what they are trying to get out of roleplaying.
Recently people are hating on Wizards of the Coast, rightfully so but despite that
D&D mechanics are fine if you want to hop in and kill some goblins with friends
P.S. Lewis complaining about how bloated D&D is and recommending Pathfinder was funny.

I think more people than ever are into TTRPG and 5e is a good jumping off point *as a system.* It's a shame it's owned by apparently some of the greediest mfs in that sphere, but I think the system is fun and simple.

I'm confused by your argument here.
Apologies, as I'm not too familiar with other TTRPG systems outside of DnD and Pathfinder, but are we suggesting that the above are too complex to new comers?
I'd argue you the spell slot system is very easy to understand, you cast a spell using a slot you have available, once you cast its its gone and you don't get used slots back until you rest.
Modifiers come from your certain overall score in a specific attribute and correlate to a certain set of skills, all of which are easily shown through tables in the rules.
And levels are the most straight forward, you level up you get new abilities or extra abilities, etc. All of which shown in a easy to understand table.
Again, apologies if I've missed the point, I'd argue that there are plenty of aspects to DnD that a new comer might find confusing, but the systems you described are in my opinion fairly easy to wrap one's head around.

Pyrion's played the editions of D&D that's a lot more focused on a specific style of play, which makes it excel at exactly that (dungeon crawly, loot gathering). However modern D&D (5e mostly, but also 4e) is less concerned about being focused on a specific style of play, but instead trying to allow the players to do absolutely everything.
This creates a sort of lukewarm experience for everything except killing monsters. Roleplaying is lackluster and can be frustrating, character progression isn't tied to any mechanic other than leveling up(which is achieved by just showing up to the session), and even combat becomes an absolute slog if not balanced properly to the point that some DM's just ignore the monster's healthbar, and just have them die when they think it's been hit enough times.
While it is technically possible to run nearly any setting in D&D 5e, it would be basically a watered down version of whatever setting you're trying to achieve. If you wanted a survival dungeon crawling game, you're better of playing the early editions of D&D. If you wanted a sci-fi setting, there are options for sci-fi stuff in 5e, but you're much better off playing Stars Without Number, or the dozens of other sci-fi TTRPGs.
Lewis is right in the sense that most other, especially indie table top RPGs are a lot more focused, meaning a much clear and better experience if the DM is also trying to be specific.

Stars Without Number is the most fun I've ever had with combat in a TTRPG, it's so much less of a slog than 5e's fights while feeling similar in a lot of ways. I always feel like there are many many rounds in 5e that don't serve the drama at all - in my experience it takes a consistently high effort by a really good DM to keep it interesting. When my group tried Stars we had a very novice DM running it and it took minimal creativity on his part for the fights to always be fun and heavy on tactics - which helps to blend the battles in to the roleplay, instead of feeling like rolling initiative is pressing pause on the drama for a while.
Don't suppose you know any systems that feel similar to that but for fantasy / d&d style settings? 😂

At its core with the way movement and actions work it's extremely similar to 5e, but the combat is much more lethal so tends to be shorter (iirc your starting health will be like 1d6, and a shotgun deals something like 3d4+1. Getting shot is very bad news). It ends up being much more focused on planning and preparing and making sure you always have the upper hand or can escape when you don't.
I'm not sure what the secret sauce is but while our DM was not the most creative lad the system made even the most "boring" encounter setups dramatic and fun - like, a room and some dudes with guns can be sufficient dm prep (tho it really shines with a bit more creativity) - while a fun encounter in 5e tends to take more effort to make.
      Stars gud, hope you enjoy!

@TheChaosWaffle "Roleplaying is lackluster and can be frustrating" There's no rules in D&D for roleplaying. So how are you blaming the system for bad roleplaying? Thats a player problem

sick pod fellas. 1 in 5 asthma cases can be traced back to gas ovens? that is shocking. not to overstep and get parasocial but pyrion could do dota-free january for the sake of his heart and his stress levels. however dude got quite heated about the vegetable lasagna so it probably wouldnt work. weirdly looking forward to relistening to this one in a few years time.
theres a black flickering going on from the background, a single frame, right before the background animation loops. not like it disrupts my listening experience but yeah. happened in last ep too so FIX IT. thanks

Been playing tabletop RPGs for 23 years now, and D&D 5e suffers from holding on to aspects of old D&D while trying to market itself as a narrative storytelling experience when it is not. D&D is a game about killing monsters and earning loot/experience, that is an objective statement because 90% of the rulebook is rules for killing monsters and earning loot/experience. People can do a lot of things besides killing monsters in D&D, but that is improv/roleplaying where the rules don't matter, so you can't say that they're really "playing D&D". Every system I've played besides D&D I have enjoyed more, unfortunately D&D is so universal that if you want to get a group together to play it's hard to get people to try something new.

Lewis being completely brainwashed by all the D&D hate. I'm not saying that D&D is *the best* system, but shitting on it because you're not creative enough to tweak a setting to your liking is a you problem, not the systems. I've played D&D for years and in my experience, if there is "laborious combat" or "bullshit settings" it's a DM problem, again, not the systems.

Lol, why would you wanna force your thing into the system when there are so many great games there is absolutely one that fits your needs. I rather explore new games instead of having Dnd tunnelvision

@@LPDani123 That's not what im saying at all, I'm talking about tweaks like high fantasy/low fantasy. Dont like elves? take them out.. etc. Lewis is the one saying "I'd like to set D&D in Judge Dread, Dune, Jurassic Park, Call of Cthulu" Yet instead of just quietly playing a different system, his needlessly shitting on a system that doesn't deserve it. And complains about Hasbro for... advertising? How outrageous..

@@desOOOm I dont really mean the OGL hate, its the way that Pflax literally says "tell me whats wrong with it then" and the only reply Lewis can come up with is "its just bad". If Lewis has actually been trying it and has issues with it, why cant he think of any actual examples? Tom whines about dnd all the time and constantly talks about other ttrpg systems, is it a coincidence that Lewis is suddenly saying the same things almost word for word? I doubt it personally. I dont care if people dont like dnd, everyone likes different things, but it just annoys me when people with an audience, like Lewis, shit on something so hard, with no legitimate reason.

Wtf lew lew, i mean each to their own but I have been running and playing 5e since I was about 15. I think 5e is great however I completely agree with Wizards of the coast's idea of trying to take everyones money and take control of the whole thing as complete bullshit that's what fucked with it and yes I agree that D&D is just straight up going to go downhill from now. 6e looks like a complete and total pile of shit but if you haven't had a chance to play 5e and you haven't given it a proper chance, getting used to the system ect. then give it a go, use what rules ect. you would. If you are going to stream it or make videos however which I am sure is the case then maybe try a different system because yeah the money-hungry bastards want to try take that away from you to. Quite unfortunate. I do really think 5e is up there when it comes to D&D (like) systems. Its flexibility with being able to adapt to homebrew and the simplicity of the rules makes it fun and easy to get into. would be awesome to see flax and lew lew actually do something though! hype for that.
