By Andrew West on The Religion and Ethics Report
One hundred years ago this week, on Armistice Day, 1918, much of Europe lay in ruins - the steeples of thousands of churches toppled in the war.
The religious establishment, on both sides, had used their pulpits to support the war as a fight for civilisation.
But British author and Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens argues the war had a profound and terrible effect on religion in Europe.
He recalls the devastation across the continent on the morning of Armistice Day.
