One thing about Starfinder I truly appreciate: meet ups.
How many games of fantasy where everyone meets up in a tavern/pub? Most of them.
Places I've had meetings in Starfinder:
    - Strip club
    - Parking lot of space Walmart at three in the morning
    - On the internet during a scheduled Zoom call
    - Waiting area of a checkpoint where our respective transports were getting inspected
    - Various apartments
    - Space Bar Mitzvah

I mean, you can meet up at those places in medieval fantasy too. Just the medieval fantasy equivalent. I've seen (or done) 5e meetups in a train, the middle of the road, a ship, an AIRship, even a damn canoe, and wizard college. Stuff like prison and brothels can work too.

One thing great about Starfinder, race templates aren't super dense, so it's actually really easy to adapt exotic races as a player character. Many aliens, if they have any form of civilization or intelligence, also have player options on their stat blocks, even. Since it's very technology-driven, your innate racial powers won't surpass your class and equipment, even they would in a more medieval RPG.
They have stat blocks to play a floating brain, what's basically a tentacle monster, a dragonkin, or even a giant crystalline slug. And it makes it look pretty simple to homebrew aliens to play as too.

The starfinder races are a bit ridiculous. There are like 60 of them now, and I've banned quite a few for being too out of place (some don't have hands, or are large sized, or both, which makes it really difficult to play the game when they can't pick things up)

    • @Zedrinbot
      @Zedrinbot 3 года назад +15

@@reaganeidemiller7132 Yeah, they always need to be suitable for the setting, but still, the stat blocks being slimmer by comparison to the things your class and equipment gives you makes it easier to draft up homebrew.

@@reaganeidemiller7132 Officially(unless otherwise noted) all playable races have at least two limbs/appendages that act as arms/hands. Like a Bantrid's head tentacles count as hands or an Urog's mantis-like arms. But I've definitely banned large size races to non-experienced players, I've had too many people block hallways or dying from friendly fire because they're so damn big. I think tweaking map sizes or try to keep fights in open areas might be the best way around large pcs. Plus some large races are just made broken like the Trox or Megalonyxa.

Please do more of Starfinder. For the brief time that I played it it was great. I was a Mechanic, stuck on a prison/mining moon. My friends and I started a jailbreak, caused havoc and got loose. The best part (for me) was that the ships to gtfo were all mechanically and digitally locked but, being a big brain Mechanic, I hacked the ship and manually unlocked the door and kick started the engine. Then we were free.
    Good times.

Hey, good video. Loved the editing. Two rules corrections, if I may:
    - Spending Resolve to restore Stamina is meant to be done out of combat over a 10 minute rest.
    - Character creation is VERY much balanced around point buy for ability scores, with rolling being an optional roll for legacy's sake.
Thanks for showing SF some love!

Love starfinder especially as a setting its great one of the only games where not only arent the undead strictly evil they're also mostly functional members of society. really threw my players through a loop when they boarded the ship of a missing skeletal musician and found the entire place reconfigured like a social event with tons of dance halls a banquet of very poisonous food for most lifeforms and some way too helpful undead servants. nonething in the place had more than like 3 hp. but nothing was really trying to kill them. just hurt them by accidents standing in the wrong place in a swing dancehall of skeletons. bumping into oozes in a zero G dance room eating bad food. so they just played along till the end. it was a dangerous social dungeon in space and i cannot think of anywhere else thats possible. I really enjoyed the video and i look forward to the next one. I'm really hoping at some point he covers Through the Breach. I love Starfinder, but sometimes I feel like the gear system both works for and against it. On one hand you have TONS of customization options between weapon types, weapon mods, armor mods, cybernetics, etc.. That is awesome and I absolutely LOVE it for that! But on the other hand, gear level kinda ends up a LOT more important than character level. Sure as your character level goes up you'll get more abilities and stats, but without high level gear you'll do no damage or have terrible AC regardless of your stats or class powers or feats. So sometimes it can almost feel like your actual character is less important than your collection of loot. The insane level of customization with the gear can also cause a bit of feature shock due to the sheer volume of stuff you can buy. Especially if you're a new player and don't know what you need or what is worth the credits, since unlike 5th Edition D&D, Starfinder does not have starting equipment for each class you're just given a pool of credits at creation and told to go nuts. That said, the game itself is actually tons of fun, and I really recommend the system for people looking for a new setting for their campaigns!

Awesome video Davvy, though a part of me is worried that someone is going to see this video, look up the game on the Archives of Nethys (which really should've gotten a mention - having the whole game's mechanics available for free officially can really help sell people on a system), see the starship combat rules and think "Man, I can see why Davvy never mentioned these in the video."
I don't think the starship combat rules are that bad, though I have yet to actually play Starfinder (all the people I know interested in RPGs are in America or Europe and I'm down in Australia so all the issues with game scheduling just get even worse due to timezones) so I could be wrong. I do know they've been a bit contentious at times, though I think new crew roles added in the Starship Operations Manual went some way to alleviating that.
And now the obligatory video request. :P
Exalted 3e or Through The Breach 2e. Moreso the latter because I'm curious how you'll find using a deck of poker cards shared between all the players (and each player having their own separate hand of cards from a different deck to substitute in for the card they just flipped) as a replacement for dice.

The one innovation starfinder brought was a system where you have helped points and stamina points. It is easy to regain stamina with short rests. Health points are much harder to heal

Pretty much everything else was not much of an improvement

When my friends and I played Starfinder, we always just thought of the stamina points as a personal shield generator instead. Not that it's important or anything, just felt a bit more fitting to us

fun fact, reason why i first picked starfinder was cause i didn't get into any only war games at the time.. i got hooked on it a bit, so far been apart of 3 different games all quite interesting c: and the system is for some strange reason simpler than 5e but at the same time being more complex

I'm not trying to crap on the editing by any means, but what's been up with the different assets blinking on and off suddenly in your videos as of late? 4:23 being a good example of Bond blinking in and out real quick. It's not a huge deal, but my eyes always snap to it and my brain is trained now to think those are hidden messages or something. Really not a biggie, just wondered. Keep up the great work!

As someone who just recently finished playing a year long campaign as an operative, here´s my 2 cents. But first, let me get this out of the away: if you want to play D&D/Pathfinder in space that´s exactlly the game for you. Also, the lore is great.
    If not, here´s my criticisms:
    - The starship system is boring, seems like an afterthought (even considering the Starship Operations Manual)
    - Firearms are not taken seriously, they feel like high-tech bows. As a standard rule, you can make only one shot per turn, even with automatic rifles. Sure you can use some other maneuvers as a full action, but they are rarely a good option
    - Grenade damage is way too low. Sniper rifles are barely useless
    - As an operative, you have a lot of options in combat, but just one really matters: trick attack. It´s very similar to the sneak attack in 5e, except you don´t have to meet specific conditions to be able to use it... so why not use it all the time? As a house rule, we tried to fix this by making it consume 1 resolve point to execute, so dual attacks and triple attacks would a lot more useful
    - The bonuses go way too high. If you ever played D&D 3.5 you know this is a problem in mid-high levels as low level enemies pose little to no threat after your AC goes up beyond 25 or something.
    - Enemy saving throws are way too high in later game. Most of the time our technomancer tried to use a spell that could be resisted by a saving throw, she would fail as the monster just had to roll something around 3-7 on the D20.
If you´re looking for something more sci-fi, I highly recommend Traveller 2e by Mangoose. There´s also the Alien RPG that seems pretty fun. If you want to play Star Wars, just go to the Star Wars RPG already.

If you're a fan of VtM mechanics, I highly recommend Vampire the Requiem 2e. I would to see a 2e of Starfinder with Pathfinder 2e's new action system.

D&D 6e should be similar to Starfinder with the classes where their are many options that a you choose from instead of a few of set in stone abilities. Or at least make subclasses change some of the core abilities instead of like two or three special abilities. Also backgrounds should give a more mechanical benefit in combat instead of a roleplay ability because they are already their for roleplay purposes. Also skills should be different. Maybe something where you have a pool of points and you can put them where you want. People say it allows for broken characters, but it's up to the DM to circumvent that. I think it makes for more diverse and unique characters and since I'm a forever DM I'd prefer if my players had the ability to more creative and challenge me more so I can enjoy DMing more.
