Awesome Vid guys! I tried to wind surf when we were in Punta Cana, DR once; disaster and embarrassment is what ensued. Watching you do it gives me hope. ha! Love the drone footage as well. Safe sailing and fair winds.
Awesome! Loved watching you try the windsurfer! Always a good time watching you guys. Keep enjoying the adventure. Also keep doing your video's love watching them all.
Ryan, that was definitely a "Dock Line Knot". Don't argue with the Admiral a.k.a Tasha Remember, happy wife (or in your case girlfriend) happy life! Fair winds to all aboard.
had a weekend binge watching all your vids from first one to this one- I am an American married to British Wife 16 years now (working in the UAE)...told the Wife We will be doing what you guys are doing one day, she has no choice ( : ...keep it up guys, great vids, I'll be following along closely!
That's funny, I'm an American with an English girlfriend of six years! Youre wife Scottish, English or Welsh? Anyway, we are currently looking at making major changes in our lives and buy ourselves a Moody.
So the knot tasha tied at the beginning of your vid was observed carefully by a certified NYS Forest Ranger and was determined to be a bonafide wahthafuk knot. Thanks for your vids! You guys are awesome.
Good vlog guys. FYI If you put the windsurfers mast uphaul rope end loop around the universal joint on the bottom of the mast you won't have to fumble for it when trying to pull the mast out of the water.
The bit of elastic with the loop on the end to pull the mast up is meant to go round the bottom of the mast so it is a handle you can put all your weight on
An offer for crew duties in exchange for windsurfing lessons is a great deal. Downhaul the sail until the leech is slightly loose upper batten. Outhaul for a nice pocket in the sail. Tension the battens. A proper rigged sail will uphaul with more ease. Great story so far.
Great Vid, We picked up a drone from Rick as well. Our Catamaran is ready to go and we are heading to the Sea of Cortez in August. I see were now on the same Ocean, the BIG ONE. Cheers Scott and Laurie S/V "MUSKOKA" " Off the Starboard Hull"
WOW, it's like you were all born on a windsurfer.......... it was like you and the windsurfer were just ONE integrated unit following the ebbs and flow of the ocean waves and wind,,,,,,,, I gotta admit that I can see you entering the X Games soon after witnessing that feat of natural athleticism. Oh and Tash, after watching the first five minutes I now know why you named your boat CHEEKY monkey :-} I love all your videos and blogs, keep them up. Bye for now.
Hi Guys, Great video :) Excellent knot Tasha! I think it is fair to say, that making ground upwind without a centerboard is hard work. Point too high and you tend to go sideways. I tend to aim for 80 degrees to the true wind, which gives me enough boat speed to get the fins working, and then I can make some ground in the gusts, and then bare off just enough a in the lulls to hold my ground. Also i find when i am teaching that SUP helps with balance for sailboarding and vice versa.
With the sailboard, pull the outhaul on tighter so the sail is flat, put the boom a little higher on the mast, this will give you better leverage in a stronger breeze. Tie the loose end of the uphaul rope to the bottom of the mast. A light wind and a flat sea are really good for learning. Enjoy.
I thought it was a good video...I'm new to sailing, a retired expat, whose living in Bangkok. Interesting to see the catamaran, instead of a monhull. My wife might even agree to such a boat, in the future...You are a good team, with a great attitude, so have fun!!!
Always love following you guys, we are full time in a few months. Heading to BVI Tuesday for a week for a little RandR. Keep our boat in Soper's Hole she a Lagoon 450 named Free Bird. Hope to catch up some day. Also just bought a wind surfer but haven't tried it yet so the tips were great.
I never paid for a lesson back in the day. But lots of help from people on the beach. I learned a lot from VHS instruction videos. All this is on RUclips now.
on the windsurfing, the uphaul gets looped over the end of the mast so you have more controlled leverage while pulling the sail up. sail forward turns away from the wind , sail back turns into the wind. Start in the T position.
I would have thought you picked up some knots while owning boats... Didn't any of the books in Hideaway have any knot diagrams? Great video, looking forward to the next one, they can't come soon enough.
I've studied the knot closely and have come to two conclusions. A.) If the boat stayed tied to the dock, then I don't what type of knot it is! B.) If the boat didn't stay tied to the dock, the it's a Houdini knot. Hope this helps. Love all the video's. Thanks for making and posting them.
The ENDING made me smile from ear to ear! You are leaving the Islands of the Caribbean but the eastern shore of Panama is still the Caribbean. Just saying ; )
Hi Guys - I always remembered the Moto for Windsurfing was it only takes 1,000 falls. So keep at it. One question - What is the name / brand of the orange PFD / Vest you are wearing? Have never seen that before.
They're pretty cool, right? We have two of them on board. They're reversible (blue in the other side) and we picked them up in our mega Decathalon shop in Barcelona.
Folks, it is called the "oh shit" knot. Tasha, please demonstrate how to tie it again. In slow motion as I am a bit slow. Love you guys and keep the videos coming :)
The loop in the uphaul goes around the base of the mast. Keep your butt in. Hand nearest the mast holds the weight. Other hand pulls in or out and controls the speed. Uphaul with mast position between legs then move forward leg behind mast base. Push the board with your legs to change direction.
HI Cheekey Monkeys👍. Great video again. On the dinghy knot issue have you not considered putting one of these on the dinghy line www.s3i.co.uk/Wichard-Carbine-Hook-60mm-Asymmetric.html - or something similar you can get locally. Super convenient when at anchor and making trips back and forth, secure to bathing ladder or a stanchion, and when jetty side to a mooring ring or similar. On the windsurfing side - you just have to resign yourself to falling off for the first day or two, but also consider where the centre of pressure (cop) is in relation to the board ( and where the wind is coming from of course) if you tilt the rig forward then the cop moves forward and the bow will turn, as you rake the mast aft the cop moves back and the bow will turn in the opposite direction AND as you trim the rake to a position of balance where the board tracks true the the cop is bang over the keel. If you want more windsurfing or engineering help you need to invite me😳😀⛵️🍷🍻
That black bungee line is the Uphaul and you had the bottom loose. Before you attach the mast to the universal on the board, pass the mast base through the loop. Windsurfing is not easy to learn, and it will take years to get proficient. Windsurfers don't go upwind well. Basically you beam reach back and forth. When the wind is stronger you will need to learn to use a harness so your body weight can hold the sail. It's much less work to sail in higher winds than slog and you have to hold up the sail. Once you are planing in the South Pacific in clear blue water it will be amazing. $600!! it's not rocket science!
Why yes we are! But we just pushed off the docks and are en route to the Galapagos! You can track our position here: www.gtctrack.com/anonymous/turftosurf
hey guys, question for ya. R u concern with pirates, does it effect ur planing/routes/routines etc. I mention it cuz there seems to be some activity of the coast of Colombia. interested on ur thoughts on this issue. best of wishes to u all.
So far it hasn't had any effect on our planning at all. We gather there are some places which have some issues - but none we've been to (or near to) yet.
GUYS next time u put the windsurf together put the pull up line of the sails on the mast and attach the mast to the joint this will make it ezier to find the pull up line when u need it /)
That is most definitely, by far, the best example of a dockline knot that I have EVER seen!
Awesome Vid guys! I tried to wind surf when we were in Punta Cana, DR once; disaster and embarrassment is what ensued. Watching you do it gives me hope. ha! Love the drone footage as well. Safe sailing and fair winds.
Great video guys! Good job learning to windsurf! :) Fair winds in the Pacific!
Thanks guys!

Ryan, that was definitely a "Dock Line Knot". Don't argue with the Admiral a.k.a Tasha Remember, happy wife (or in your case girlfriend) happy life! Fair winds to all aboard.
Ha ha, great effort guys! It's been years since I've windsurfed and keen to give it a go to see if sailing translates to windsurfing...
Let us know!
The song at the end was so uplifting.
Made me laugh out loud when u edited the crashing in the water fast. That i would like to see more of.
That's a "modified" half hitch. :) You know what they say - "if you can't tie a knot, tie a lot!" lol
One thing you need to windsurf is wind. W/o wind balancing the sail is a PITA when you are first learning. 5-10 knots :P
Love to watch you guys you have more fun than most out there sailing, good luck with your adventures, Thank you, I will be here to watch!
These are great edits and great stories keep it up!
+Jesus Salgueiro (Zeus) thank you!!
HI from canada, I have tried the wind surfing too, watching you brought back memory's, Get vid as allways, Thanks for sharing,
Terry
Thanks for sharing again. I love following you guys and I can only sit and dream :D Fair winds always
Great to see you give windsurfing a try. Been doing it since 1989, it's become a bit of a niche sport now. But I still rip it up I'm my mid 50's.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos your energy and your humor. Thanks so much!
Love watching your adventures, keep the fun and entertainment coming!

Nice! My wife is English, from Cambridge area, how about your girlfriend? Going with a monohull eh? Good luck and happy sailing!
Kevin McKinney She's from Rochester / Kent. Yeah monohull all the way, and thanks buddy.
I'm so jealous. I do miss the Caribbean. Love your videos.
these knots come under the category macrame knots Cheers guys enjoying your cruise.
classic granny knot with a twist....nicely done lol
You guys do such a great job of telling the story. I wish I was their. Be safe and have fun!
Absolute awesome the two of you, tasha and Ryan. Keep the good spirt up and keep posting these videos.Cheers!!
Epic stuff guys, thanks for the videos! Hope to be able to join you all on the water soon, cheers.

Thanks for your vids! You guys are awesome.
Love watching you having fun!

Too much fun! Thanks. Cheers
light wind and a flat sea are really good to get on that board, just practice more and you will have a blast!
Kudos to you guys for trying to learn to wind surf via you tube! I had an instructor the first time out and I think you did better than I. Keep at it!
+Frostbbitten We've a way to go, but our new crew member Lance is a wind surfing instructor!!
you lot are awesome, very easy to relate too. And just a whole lot of fun to watch. Thanks for your sharing :)
Awesome video . : . Fare winds and following seas!
always puts a smile on my face!!!!!! good stuff.
It's the dinghy dock knot. We all forget our knots when we dock the dinghy!
Love it!!!! Looking forward for the new videos. Viento en popa y a toda vela...
Thanks for sharing your travels!
I LOVE YOU GUYS! LET ME SAIL WITH YOU
My back got sore just watching that :-)

That was an awesome video guys!! 😎👌
as always you guys did a great video, thanks
Great video, I wondered how Tasha got on with her 13 mile race across the island? Keep up the great work! :)
She got lost, ran 15 miles, and survived. My breakfast was great too - Ryan ;)
Looks like the classic "over under - under over" knot or 2 quarter hitches with a back twisted half hitch. Very avant garde.
Great Vid,
We picked up a drone from Rick as well.
Our Catamaran is ready to go and we are heading to the Sea of Cortez in August.

did we find out how Tasha's run went??
Like the drone experience..it's good to see the beautiful vlog people have a learning curve too

love the binge link thanks

Doing great!!!!
as with any sailboat, you need a center board to go to windward efficiently
That's good to know!!

Thanks very nice video
Looks like two half hitches to me. Was the dinghy still there on your return? Then it did the job! :-) Love your videos, fair winds. __/)__
The ENDING made me smile from ear to ear! You are leaving the Islands of the Caribbean but the eastern shore of Panama is still the Caribbean. Just saying ; )
Would have been nice to have dingy rescues when I was learning, heh. Had a couple walks of shame.
Try kite boarding it's more like water skiing and the Kite keeps you up for the most part
When you get to Sydney I will by you all a beer (or 7 !)
Overhand with a half hitch lock hahaha
'Rabbit goes out the hole, around the tree, and back in the hole' =Bowline
That's called a hatchet knot because you need a hatchet to untie it.
I don't know if Greta Benvenuti is Sicilian, but she's definitely Italian, so Ryan wins the "Guess The Windsurfing Instructor's Nationality" contest.
Funny, again!
How was the second race, looks like it would have been fun, if not very warm?
I sent my comment on my personal page
Cheers

+Duncan Bell Its never the same twice! :)
It's a WTF knot... we're used to them LOL
Forgot to mention.... That's the " I really don't care as long as you... Mr. Dinghy.... Stay there while I pick my friend up " knot!
Cool Vids
watch all of your videos love them, hated the rap crap on this one but muted it and was able to watch all the way through

Thats the same knot I use on my shoes
Hy how was your run from story 23.
if you tie a knot nobody's ever seen before you get to name it

+805gregg Maybe knot?
more downhall-till the wrinkles go. also loop the uphaul under the base of the mast

Really good videos! You should watch Casey Neistat for some filming inspirations!
We do ;)
good job windsurfing. you should try kiting too.
+TheMonkini it's definitely on the list. Last time we tried, Tasha ended up in hospital. So everything's an improvement after that, right?
Are you guys and gals in panama right now 5/27/2016
Why yes we are! But we just pushed off the docks and are en route to the Galapagos! You can track our position here: www.gtctrack.com/anonymous/turftosurf
You should meet up with Riley and Elayna on Sailing la Vagabonde
First rule of wind surfing, no matter what direction the wind is, you are always better sailing away from the land and no good sail back.
Very nice,what beach?
That was Maho beach in St. John. Gorgeous spot!
THIS knot is
the "i dont know how to tie a knot" knot :)
