I began working on this video a month before Russia withdrew from the Grain Deal and resumed attacks on Ukrainian shipping again, including several drone attacks that have been launched against Ukraine's Danube River ports that I mentioned within this video. I will release a follow-up later covering everything that's been happening since.

@@guatf1 Indeed the danube isn't the most efficient route. The Ukrainians are mainly using the Romanian port of Constanta to carry grain out to the Black Sea in protected waters. But the main bottleneck is getting the grain there in the first place. The infrastructure connecting Ukraine to Romania is underdeveloped.

There is one broad gauge rail line going from Ukraine and it goes deep into Slovakia normally used to transport steel ore into the steel factory in city called Kosice which could be used to transport wheat to safety of Europe.

That isn’t the issue. It’s not about safety, it’s about having to unload the Ukrainian train and load all the grains again to a train fit to run on the standard gauge. That is a very lengthy process. That causes bottlenecks in how much they can export.

It’s also important to note that the Baltic States are also offering their ports for export. The idea is that if the grain can get and transit through Poland, we’ll deliver it from Riga, Klaipeda, Ventspils etc.
Edit: Yes, I understand the grain would be going out of its way to be exported to the Baltics, however I think we’re in a situation where anything helps. As long as the grain gets out.

What i heard is that Eastern European countries like Poland, Hungary, and Romania, etc were quite unhappy to take or pass Ukrainian grain because it's absolutely trashing the prices of their own grain.

A little surprised that Poland isn’t able to make the same offer. It has a common frontier with Ukraine, which would make the conveyance of freight less complex than to Lithuania or Latvia to Baltic Sea ports such as Gdańsk. The initiative is laudable, but the challenge of removing bottlenecks on Ukraine’s ability to export so that it can support itself remains. Slava Ukrainyi!
@@ilokivi it is able and it did so in the past, the problem was that a lot of the imported grain didn't leave instead it stayed inside poland which crashed polish grain market. Polish farmers lost billions and so they protested and eventually ban was set on ukrainian grain which is still in force.
Australia sadly uses multiple train gauges between states and territories, it's really annoying. It would a worth converting them all just for the logistical profits, but it's too hard for governments to think about.
Leave it to a government over complicate "just pick one."

“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.
Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.”
This article is complemented by Article 6, which stipulates:
Article 61
“For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:
on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France 2, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;
on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.”
The principle of providing assistance
With the invocation of Article 5, Allies can provide any form of assistance they deem necessary to respond to a situation. This is an individual obligation on each Ally and each Ally is responsible for determining what it deems necessary in the particular circumstances.
This assistance is taken forward in concert with other Allies. It is not necessarily military and depends on the material resources of each country. It is therefore left to the judgment of each individual member country to determine how it will contribute. Each country will consult with the other members, bearing in mind that the ultimate aim is to “to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area”.
At the drafting of Article 5 in the late 1940s, there was consensus on the principle of mutual assistance, but fundamental disagreement on the modalities of implementing this commitment. The European participants wanted to ensure that the United States would automatically come to their assistance should one of the signatories come under attack; the United States did not want to make such a pledge and obtained that this be reflected in the wording of Article 5.

Maybe I'm exaggerating only because I'm romanian, but I think you Should have showed more images of Danube's Delta to show why the initiative was saw with bad eyes from some of us (and also because the bad history between Romania and Ukraine before the war) and also talk more about how Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Hungry told EU that they wont allow ukrainian grains to enter their country anymore if they dont only travel further away (many were sold in the said countries affecting their own farmers)
War is bad and brings a lot of suffering, but that doesn't mean that they need to destroy the Danube Delta(one of the most important symbols of Romania), plus the ukrainian grains already destroyed some parts of the economy

As a Hungarian I really detested that we don't want Ukraine to sell here. Food prices here are through the roof but we don't need it... sure. Bread is like 50% more expensive than before war.
@davidneacsu6526 Dutch pig farmers would've been very happy with that grain, because now they've to buy more expensive grain from Ukraine's neighbors. This is just protectionism and war profiteering from those farmers. Ukraine always has been a problem for EU farmers. I remember one of the reasons for the Netherlands saying no to the EU Association Treaty was Ukraine's massive poultry industry being too price competitive for them.

This video is biased. The video does not say anything about the fact that the West, throughout the entire year that the agreement was in force, did not fulfill any of its obligations that were spelled out in this agreement. The video says nothing at all about Western obligations in this treaty.

My thoughts on Russian bloccades jumps to how Ukraine can break them. We've seen they can employ sea drones and Neptune missiles extremely effectively.

Neptune will not help to save the port infrastructure.
It's not Ukrainians breaking through as they're not piloting the ships.
The issue for Ukraine is ports to load, the shipping issue is on ship owners getting in and out safely.
Ukraine has no navy to escort ships out past the blockade even if they did they'd be targets.
The only other solution is a third party navy like Turkey that Russia is afraid to engage out of fear of expanding the war.
I thought that's what the video was going to be about too!
The thing is, it's not a Civil War era blockade where ships have to be within canon fire range to enforce it. It's going to be enforced by stuff like a missile launched from 100 miles away, or a jet. I don't think it would be easy to break. Maybe impossible.
The other thing is it might be enough just to have the threat -- maybe ships won't be able to get insurance if they are going to Odessa, similar to the EU sanctions against Russia that prevent oil tankers from getting insurance if the oil is sold above the price cap.
I've learnt a lot about how the world works and runs from your videos, they are very interesting. Thanks for making them, you make it seem so simple or easy to digest all all the information.

I love your episodes. You always research your topic thoroughly and don't shy away from explaining the nuances that make the subjects interesting. I typically watch each episode as soon as my schedule allows. It's because I enjoy your channel so much that I would like to provide a little free advice, which you are also free to ignore.
Try to avoid the use of intensifiers like extremely, incredibly, highly (etc) in your writing. The reason is that these words don't actually convey any quantitative information and can be subjective, which is a nice way of saying that they do not add anything to the sentence and may be omitted without changing the meaning of your statements. In my writing classes twenty years ago, we were encouraged to find more descriptive words to replace these intensifiers. Ask yourself, "why is it extremely so?" Or "why is it catastrophic?" Or "What makes it so incredibly important?" And then replace those words or statements with the answers, or if you feel the intensifier is necessary, explain it with a "because" phrase.
I realize this is social media and such academic standards are out of place, but you may find that approach helps with the writing. I also realize that getting views and keeping an audience engaged requires some more exaggerated language at times, and that's fine. But if those are the reasons you use it, I am certain that knowing how to avoid the overuse of such words will make your targeted use of them more effective.
Once again, feel free to ignore my advice. I will love your show regardless. Keep up the good work!

I stopped watching his videos a few years ago specifically because he uses this over-exaggerated language.
Everything is always CATASTROPHIC or THE BIGGEST [insert subject] or MONUMENTALLY [adjective here].
It's so charged but never has any substance behind it. When everything is over-emphasized, it's impossible to tell what's actually important.
Maybe this is me not understanding American language, but I think it's just RUclipsr bullshit to keep people watching even if the content is mid.
@LancesArmorStriking it's something English teachers consider a bad habit and lazy writing, and they helped me to break that habit. It is a common practice in casual conversation to use intensifiers, particularly among children and adolescents, when every experience is still mind-blowing for them. But this RUclipsr has taken it to a level beyond that. He still has excellent content. I just mentally omit his use of intensifiers unless he then goes to to explain why it deserves to be described in such intensive language.
I totally agree! like the channel but the constant use of intensifiers makes the videos sound sensationalist and less serious than they actually are.
Bthw, Hi there from Killiya, right now a lot of ships are stuck near the former factory for repairing ships which is now being utilized for grain transport, same thing happens with truckers that haul that grain to the port itself, whole town is basically a truck stop right now. and the summer is extremly hot, I really feel sorry for guys living inside of an old 53-footer under all that heat, and no there are not a lot of places for them to sleep relax or just get out of the heat.

Speaking about the "grain initiative", which is in fact a deal, you did not mention the part in which Russia is to sell some of it's nitrate fertilizers. Thi is the part, not done by the European countries, not completed, is the real reason Russia cancelled the deal. The counterpart was dumb enough to set a condition to a deal, fail to fulfill it and then be surprised, why Russia cancels the deal. The EU just did not do it's part of the deal.
Finally someone explains the geography of the region in a sensible way.

You know that with the last black sea grain deal, only a very small margin went to poor countries. With almost all going to rich countries.. because they are first in line.

They do need it badly. That doesn't change because they get less of it.
It's not that easy though. The new members of the EU fear a drop in prices of their own production if cheaper ukrainian grain makes it into the EU market, which is why there is some opposition (the EU is - after all - a trade union protecting its members from precisely such scenarios). So there are still talks going on about how to transit freight from Ukraine. I guess we'll get there, but it will take time.
If you are talking about the EU states bordering ukraine, they don't allow the sale of ukrainian grains within their countries but they allow them to pass through.

To be fair, Ukrainian exports used to be 69B$. now they're estimated to be around 3B$. You would expect the Danube river port exports to go from 1.5% (1.03B$) up, but 25% (liberal estimates) is 750M$. Still important, but a reduction in Danube river export values by 25%. What that means or whats causing it, idk, but definitely do more research.

I’d say they’re two reasons for the reduction:
1.) Reduced output since farms have been captured and a large part of the rest now has to deal with being bombed and UXOs
2.) Reduced logistical capacity since one of the two roads leading to those ports is semi regularly out of action.

Russian missile already landed in November 2022 in a NATO country of Poland killing 2 people. What was the response? President of Poland seriously was going to activate #5 but then he got under pressure from those who wanted to prevent escalation and they forced him to lie that he don't know which missile that was and may be even a Ukrainian one. Same scenario can go with Romania.

There is also most of the nations along the Danube have access to the sea and several have offered to unload and some of the grain along the way to be redistributed from their sea ports directly through the Mediterranean sea.
There is chernozem in Southern Bulgaria as well, around the cities of Stara Zagora and Yambol in the Thracian plane

Rail gauge isnt a problem. The united states switched rail gauges in the whole country in 2 days in the 1840's. You only need to move one of the rails.
Problem is that the Port‘s in the Budjak region are only acessible from 2 ways, one of them is a bridge that already got damaged in the war and the other crossing the border with moldova which could drag them into the war (russian peacekeeper troops are in the transnistria region there already)
Edit: the Moldova connection also got a bridge over the temuk river russia could simply bomb :/

What is the feasiblity of changing some rail tracks in say Poland to Ukraine wide, just enough to get to the nearest station /distribution centre, where it could be safely transfered to European width track.

Interesting thing I didn't know was that my country's, Finland's, rail gauge is not EU compliant, but also isn't the same as the Russians have, although it's close enough that it is compliant (1524mm). Not much use right now of course that the line to Petersburg is shut.

Everything outlined was effectively communicated in this video. I felt the undergoing dire acumen needed for the economic survival of Ukraine under their current circumstances as much as I could from my part of the world.
It's crazy how simple things like a railroad gauge derails efficient trade.
I wonder if you could design a railcar that works on both gauges. You would have two pairs of freely spinning railwheels, one pair set to each gauge, both able to be raised and lowered respective to the other pair. The hardest bit would be the enginecar, but most are deisel electric now. No reason you couldn't install another set of electric motors powered by the same diesel engine.
You'd have to make a part of the track, perhaps a couple miles worth, that has both rails on it. This would allow a train to lower its other set of wheels, roll onto this section of track, and then raise the other set of wheels before clearing the mixed track area.
There are actually trains and cars with three sets of wheels for this very purpose!
That's a really cool idea, but that train would probably be a maintenance nightmare.
They exist, but there are not nearly enough of them. Converting between gauges is also still nontrivial...

The limited Russian forces in Transnistria would be destroyed very quickly if they threatened the M15 highway. There was already speculation earlier this year that Ukraine would launch a cross border operation to neutralize them and seize a substantial cold war era weapons depot (Cobasna ammunition depot).
Ukraine would be an agressor then. Not to mention Ukraine can't afford to fight a 2 front war.

@@saucyinnit8799 Transnistria is not a real state, it's a puppet state set up directly by the Russian military for the purpose of an illegal land grab (Just like in DNR and LNR before they were illegally annexed.) And yes, the Russian forces in Moldova have been completely cut off since the war started and will remain that way as they are landlocked. Also a few Bradley's and Leopards hit by artillery hardly counts as a "graveyard" especially considering the actual(Russian) tank graveyard of Vuhledar.

"Budjak", in Bosnian language, means corner, or place in corner of the room that you don't usually use or use to place things that you don't need very often. :)

@@grbadalamenti It was during the soviet era, post WW II, Ukraine inherited that land post the soviet collapse in 1991. Romania did not bother to ask for it back, and nobody really cares in Romania about that territory.
Before the war I almost never seen any Ukrainian trucks on the Dutch highways newadays I drive past dozens a day and think that there are hundreds to a couple thousand are doing it every day to drive to Rotterdam.
It is way more expensive but stil this way Ukrainian goods can stil get where they are needed and Ukrainians make some money

The capacity of the river, railroad and road are not enough to transport Ukraine's agricultural products (at most 20-30%). Also, those options are 4-16 times more expensive.

I would assume using the San river to get up into the Vistula river and then up and into the Gulf of Gdansk would be the obvious choice, it looks like theres already a gauge swap rail right next to the San River in Poland right across the border of Ukraine, so they'd be able to rail in, offload in river barges and rail out rinse repeat with impunity basically..
I think it should be a combination of both.
Poland restricted grain import from Ukraine at one point, because Polish farmers were complaining about the effect on prices. I don't know whether that was sorted or not.

for example:
build/extend broad gauge rail from Kosice(SK) or Poland to the Danube and or even a big Sea Port to only have to unload once from rail to ship. cant imagine building a single track in this day and age can be so difficult

I have a question. In an extreme situation where Russia gains the upper hand, and is poised to reconquer all of ukraine, would it be wise or suicidal for Ukraine to attack NATO purely for the reason of putting NATO troops on their soil, potentially stopping any Russian advance at the expense of the country’s sovereignty, but guaranteeing at least some part of Ukraine is still *somewhat* free from russian occupation?
