i picked my first lock today. I'm a mechanic by trade and we had a car come win with a locking towbar pin. Now my options were to cut it, melt it, TnT it, or lockpick it using some modified wiper inserts. The only reason why i knew that it was possible to pick it with wiper inserts is from watching your videos. Proud moment for me for sure
i also managed to get into very tricky containers. They use some interesting locks, and i have to admit, i felt like i was defeated. BUT.... they were just all bark and no bite. Thanks to LPL :)

Got my pick set today. Have picked all four practice locks once, and two of them twice. First picking took me just 30s or so... very proud of myself! The rest took longer but I see myself going far. Tomorrow I’m going to practice on my bedroom door.

I watch these videos not because i am into lockpicking (although he presents the subject in a way that is highly entertaining), I watch them longing to find a hobby that I enjoy in the way this lawyer man does locks/lockpicking.

I wish I had even 1/10th of the locks lpl has, I got into the hobby 6 months ago, quickly blew through everything at my local hardware stores, and I'm now learning just how expensive some of these more interesting locks from medeco and assa are. Thanks for getting me into the hobby lpl!
I said it before and again this man is a the top of a skill set. I have watched "pro pickers" the guys you hire, open a door or a car and not do it as easy or well as LPL. Even low skill attacks by someone with little experience take longer than most of his pin picking. Ya know, the let me do this again so you don't think it was a fluke.
Fun fact: these are still being manufactured and sold and are in decently common use in mall stores in my part of the US (not particularly close to Oklahoma). I've gone on quite a few calls in my state to replace these with new ones when the store loses their keys or screws up the rekeying process (which happens a LOT).
Could you make a video explaining all of this? Binding, security pins, false sets etc. I just watch these videos for therapeutic reasons, but would love to listen to an explanation of these from you.
Ive been a locksmith for years, and have only ever had to install 3 of these new, they seem to last a long time. They are still manufactured and used today.
I’ve been watching LPL for a while now and I recently purchased a proper set of lock picks. last night I managed to pick my first lock (granted it was only a Master no.4, but it still felt pretty awesome)
I do believe you could pick that through the change hole too. Get something in there that takes up the full height and start raising each pin from the front to the back pushing the new tool deeper in as you get each one done in order.
I actually have one of these. I haven't ever taken it apart to see what's inside because I was worried about a repeat performance of the time - very early in my journey as a lock hobbyist - that I destroyed a SmartKey cylinder by losing track of which parts came from which spot. It's nice to see the insides of it. I knew about the bypass already, but I don't see the point in a specialized too for a lock that I can already pick in about 20 seconds with tools I already have.

I found a similar flaw in a genie touch panel garage door opener. If you forget the combination, you can reset the opener and choose a new combination. The problem is the opener remains paired with the door after reset. So all anyone needs to do is reset the combination and open the door.
The gold standard in user re-keyable locks is the SFIC system designed by Frank Best back in the 20s. Still almost unchanged and parts interchangeable since then! And high enough security that they use them in pharmacies and banks. I don't know why they aren't more common for residential use, they are very affordable and it's great to have a single key to open everything you own. There will never be an easier to use and more secure user rekeyable system.
UChange is a perfect example, at least for me, of letting assumptions you make about a lock get into your head. Once you believe you CAN'T pick something, you've lost... I've worked on these things for years, there's actually a surprising number of them out there... Yes they're SUPPOSED to be recombinable by the end user, but very few store managers actually KNOW this, so YES, I've gotten a lot of calls to "rekey them"... even though their corporate supply sent the new keys WITH a change tool, and even instructions... So one day I get a store who'd just purchased their location and their chain is on a nationwide SFIC system... They don't have the keys for the U Change only keys for the back door which was a standard SC1 rim cylinder.... So I swap out the old cylinders for the new, and take the UChange cylinders with me to play with, BUT again, didn't have any keys. I set about trying to pick it and repeatedly failed... I tried shimming it, but the tolerances between the lock body and cylinder plug are actually pretty tight, at least in the two I had (If found the quality tends to vary with these)... after maybe 10 tries, I finally got frustrated and tossed it into a box and forgot about it.... My only guess, as I was a PRETTY good lockpicker at the time is that I'd just ASSUMED that the same sort of alien tech that allowed it to be rekeyed also made it harder to pick... I'll say it again... Once you believe you CAN'T pick something, you've lost... This changed about a year later when another locksmith had a whole BOX of them, with keys free to any of us who want them, so I took it... and so I get them home and the next weekend I finally get to see the inside of it..... The change mechanism is a little complicated, with PLENTY of springs to lose, but pins are HUGE (the diameter difference from standard pins at least)... and there's NO security features at ALL.... Confidence boosted I grabbed another one out of the box and picked it almost as fast as I'd typically SPP a Kwikset... grabbed another and repeated the process... I've made an attempt or two to replicate the Peterson tool, as they seem to be a fairly rare commodity these days, but to be fair, considering that I know know how easy they are to pick, I haven't put much work into it.
They are still widely used, through out the US. We have many customers who use them, in our area. To date, none have had a problem, it's all the other lock designs that are being defeated, but not this one. Thanks for taking one apart, it helps me understand it better. But, I would like to know where you got those defeat tools.

I told my daughter I was watching your channel and had come to the conclusion that locks were useless. She explained how I was wrong. She reminded me of when a bad windstorm came through the only way to keep the door from opening was to lock it. She said locks keep animals out. Locks keep those who can't pick them out, working like wearing a mask to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. She agreed that if someone with COVID licks the doorknobs, a mask won't help, but if a society is working for the good of itself a mask is good to wear. The same for locks. Someone can break a window, shot your lock, or gently pick it, but a lock will help. Locks are not useless, especially good ones.
The second I saw that little access hole, I knew it was ripe for abuse. LPL has trained me well! It looks like LPL was also being generous, because it doesn't seem like there is any need for a specialized tool like he was using, because the "official" re-keying tool is just a thin shim. Any shim with the same proportions would likely work.
I'm sure it is already in play but have you arranged to pass your collection on to a museum when you have no more need for it? Your passion for locks is really contagious. Thanks for what you do
Ha I own a locksmithing company in Chicago and I did six of these locks the other day for an Akira in the mall. They messed up rekeying one them selfs before I was sent out. I was surprised at how easy it was to pick. I don't know if I got lucky or what, but I almost didn't even want to try picking it because it looked like such a wicked keyway. But it took like 10 seconds. 🤣 Before I picked it I called the manufacturer and they said there's no way to rekey it without a working key that we would have to send it back. 🤣 I have no idea why so many stores are going from IC cores to this bullshit.
I think the reason there's no anti-picking features like varying tension springs and spools is because the re-keying feature would be a LOT harder to make work if the pins aren't all simple and identical. I could be wrong - I'm not an expert - but that seems like the best reason for an otherwise awesome lock not to incorporate those features.
KSC refers to the intended user of the lock. A retail space in a mall that might be hiring and firing people on a weekly basis and wasn't looking to pay a locksmith to rekey every single time. Originally the Kinney Shoe Corporation, they're now better known as Foot Locker.
The question which comes to mind immediately is 'How long did it take before someone figured out how to defeat this type of lock?' Initially, the lock looked quite secure, as do most new lock types. But it only took one person to buy a lock, dismantle it, and figure out its main design flaw.
Had to help a friend who was locked out of a storage unit. I asked myself, "What would LPL do?" #1: He'd tell them not to buy a Master #40 #2: He'd have better picks on him that a James Bond credit card set.
You know those "love locks" people put on bridges?? "Honey! Now our love will last forever!" "Nothing on one, two is binding. A click out of three aaaand the lock is open."
Probably on par with most consumer grade locks in the 60s and 70s if I had to guess, so not too bad for it's time. Still better than a Kwikset, since this lock was made before most of the thieves you see today were even born. Also, those driver pins look like they had a little bit of indentation on them. Maybe it's the video but it looks like over the decades they just wore down. Maybe a newer or less abused version of the lock might have security to it.

Easy fix: Shroud the change hole whenever it's not in the unlocked 90° position.

These locks are made in an old converted skating rink in my hometown. I always wondered how hard they are to pick and now I know.

So one day I get a store who'd just purchased their location and their chain is on a nationwide SFIC system... They don't have the keys for the U Change only keys for the back door which was a standard SC1 rim cylinder.... So I swap out the old cylinders for the new, and take the UChange cylinders with me to play with, BUT again, didn't have any keys.
I set about trying to pick it and repeatedly failed... I tried shimming it, but the tolerances between the lock body and cylinder plug are actually pretty tight, at least in the two I had (If found the quality tends to vary with these)... after maybe 10 tries, I finally got frustrated and tossed it into a box and forgot about it.... My only guess, as I was a PRETTY good lockpicker at the time is that I'd just ASSUMED that the same sort of alien tech that allowed it to be rekeyed also made it harder to pick...
I'll say it again... Once you believe you CAN'T pick something, you've lost...
This changed about a year later when another locksmith had a whole BOX of them, with keys free to any of us who want them, so I took it... and so I get them home and the next weekend I finally get to see the inside of it.....
The change mechanism is a little complicated, with PLENTY of springs to lose, but pins are HUGE (the diameter difference from standard pins at least)... and there's NO security features at ALL.... Confidence boosted I grabbed another one out of the box and picked it almost as fast as I'd typically SPP a Kwikset... grabbed another and repeated the process...
I've made an attempt or two to replicate the Peterson tool, as they seem to be a fairly rare commodity these days, but to be fair, considering that I know know how easy they are to pick, I haven't put much work into it.
They are still widely used, through out the US. We have many customers who use them, in our area. To date, none have had a problem, it's all the other lock designs that are being defeated, but not this one. Thanks for taking one apart, it helps me understand it better. But, I would like to know where you got those defeat tools.

I told my daughter I was watching your channel and had come to the conclusion that locks were useless. She explained how I was wrong. She reminded me of when a bad windstorm came through the only way to keep the door from opening was to lock it. She said locks keep animals out. Locks keep those who can't pick them out, working like wearing a mask to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. She agreed that if someone with COVID licks the doorknobs, a mask won't help, but if a society is working for the good of itself a mask is good to wear. The same for locks. Someone can break a window, shot your lock, or gently pick it, but a lock will help. Locks are not useless, especially good ones.
Thanks for taking the trouble to show us the interior. Must be a pain in the rear putting all those little parts back in place.

It looks like LPL was also being generous, because it doesn't seem like there is any need for a specialized tool like he was using, because the "official" re-keying tool is just a thin shim. Any shim with the same proportions would likely work.

I want this dude to design a unique and disgustingly complex type of lock. Like, one that you cant tell whether or not the pis are actually in place.
Ha I own a locksmithing company in Chicago and I did six of these locks the other day for an Akira in the mall. They messed up rekeying one them selfs before I was sent out. I was surprised at how easy it was to pick. I don't know if I got lucky or what, but I almost didn't even want to try picking it because it looked like such a wicked keyway. But it took like 10 seconds. 🤣 Before I picked it I called the manufacturer and they said there's no way to rekey it without a working key that we would have to send it back. 🤣 I have no idea why so many stores are going from IC cores to this bullshit.
If the change hole was put on the back, and some security pins were put in I would definitely use it
I think the reason there's no anti-picking features like varying tension springs and spools is because the re-keying feature would be a LOT harder to make work if the pins aren't all simple and identical. I could be wrong - I'm not an expert - but that seems like the best reason for an otherwise awesome lock not to incorporate those features.

Could you please review the Kohlburg "amsterdam" lock? It's a chain lock. If you already have i'd love if someone could name the video
KSC refers to the intended user of the lock. A retail space in a mall that might be hiring and firing people on a weekly basis and wasn't looking to pay a locksmith to rekey every single time. Originally the Kinney Shoe Corporation, they're now better known as Foot Locker.
The question which comes to mind immediately is 'How long did it take before someone figured out how to defeat this type of lock?' Initially, the lock looked quite secure, as do most new lock types. But it only took one person to buy a lock, dismantle it, and figure out its main design flaw.
That bypass tool was probably harder to pull off in the sixties

Had to help a friend who was locked out of a storage unit. I asked myself, "What would LPL do?"

Probably on par with most consumer grade locks in the 60s and 70s if I had to guess, so not too bad for it's time.
Still better than a Kwikset, since this lock was made before most of the thieves you see today were even born.
Also, those driver pins look like they had a little bit of indentation on them. Maybe it's the video but it looks like over the decades they just wore down. Maybe a newer or less abused version of the lock might have security to it.
