Gonna have to try this..I make Tonkatsu at least once a week every month, it's one of my favorite foods..it's turned into a comfort food for me really, right up there with pizza. I've never tried baking it though so I'll have to give this version of it a try, it's not that hard. I live in the south so I grew up with pork chops as a staple food my grandma cooked, I actually got her to enjoy tonkatsu but she was always very classic southern and preferred classic fried pork chops.
The toasted panko looks so good! 4:27 the food investigator emerges! Honestly I'm not a big fan of raw cabbage (we tend to curry, fry or cream it) but I figure as the sando sits for five minutes any residual heat will probably make it more palatable. It looks amazing.
I made these today. But I had to substitute a bit. Instead of tonkatsu sauce I used kikkoman teriyaki sauce sesame (the yellow one) and cooked it with a tsp starch to make it thicker. Also I didn‘t have cabbage so I used some leftover chicory I had in the fridge. And I added a cooked sliced egg. Very delicious! The meat was not dry, it was really soft. Loved it!
There aren't many good authentic Japanese restaurants in my area, but there are some Japanese grocery stores, so I'll make my own. This method of baking is great because I don't deep fry at home.
Thanks Nami, I love tonkatsu, and if I can make it healthier that's even better. I love your videos and especially love the Japanese word at the end. Thank you again, see you in your next video, Bye for now.
Even though I'm vegetarian, this video is going to be so useful, the little tip with the bread crumbs made my whole week. I love your videos, the music is beautiful and the Japanese word of the day is always useful! :D I'm learning so much just from watching 3 of your videos, and adding so much more nice new music to my playlist, I can't wait to see, and hear, more!
Would I have to find the ingredients at a local asian store in my hometown in order to make Katsu Sandos in the future? I'm watching this while being quarantined LOL! 😋 This is just making me crazy hungry for a Katsu Sondo!! 🤣😂
Looks quite tasty and pretty easy to cook. Not sure where to find milk bread, but I know others can be found at local Asian markets. I love how you shredded cabbage😋
Woah, I had no idea that tonkatsu = pork cutlet and tonkotsu = pork bone (broth). I'm positive that I've eaten ramen that said tonkotsu and read it wrong as tonkatsu and had no idea why it would say that.... now I know. Thanks!!
Excuse me Nami-san, I was wondering how you managed to cook the katsu to be crisp on both side, I pan fried mine then put it on the oven to keep warm but it ended up soggy at the bottom, any tips so both side stay crispy and the inside stays moist?
this seems to be a great idea... instead of deep frying.... :) cos i really thought you can only achieve the crispiness by deep frying... love love love
This looks so delicious. I'm curious to know - does it stay pretty crispy when packed in a lunch box a day ahead? I know Karaage holds up well, so I'm curious about Katsu.
Another beautiful video! And very informative. Mahalo and keep the videos coming! I hope to find this type of Japanese bread one day so I may make sandwiches like this
Pre-toasting the breadcrumbs seems like a really good idea to make a baked tonkatsu as crispy as a fried one. Thank you, Nami san!
Hope you enjoy the recipe! :)
I agree - it seems like a really smart solution.
I tried this method at the weekend, works really well! Thanks for the tip!
I tried this method this past weekend too and it really came out nice & crispy. I worked equally well for chicken.
IKR? I'm going to try that for veggie recipes too. :D

i use to eat these at family mart an unhealthy amount of times per week. 美味しかったです!
Every time I go to Japan the first place I stop is a 7-11 and get a Katsu sandwich
and a bottle of Sweat!!
7-11 meals are delicious. I wish we had something similar.
Man, I love Lawsons! Always got sandwiches there.
Pokari sweat?
Haha! Do you mean pocari? 😂
OMG.....I love those sandwiches. I ate them while visiting a few years ago. I really liked that the bread was not soggy.

I think it'll be easier to get. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese bakeries carry it.
can you use regular white bread or is shokupan just better?
Sure, you can do that! :)
Can you make Tonkatsu without Egg.
