Man all this hating on Mark is really fuckin annoying. Hes a fine player, theres nothing wrong with playing fun, chug riffs. Plus hes probs better than most of the people hating on him in the comment section. He does know how to solo, plus the sweeps in SS sound great

In my mind korn is what made 7 strings popular
Vai and to a lesser extent Petrucci had made 7 strings semi-popular among guitarists before Korn, but yes, after Korn took off and Limp Bizkit was using 7 strings as well, then every nu-metal act was it seemed. Then the fad died, I bought a bunch of RG7620's for dirt cheap, and now Djent has made the value skyrocket. Sucks, cause now even spare parts for my 7620's can cost a lot now.

Mark Heylmun now holds the record for the worst description of a 7 string guitar I've ever heard.
***** I agree. I'm a 7 string player but I don't utilize the low B in the way he described at all. IMO 7 strings are great for adding different chord voicings and extensions that would be difficult to do with only 6 strings. It also gives you more options to do runs that start off real low and ascend to the high E. Some jazz players use the B string for doing bass lines on top of their melodic lines. It definitely adds more options and dimensions to your playing plus it moves some serious air when your playing big chords that span many strings. Once you start playing 7 strings it can be difficult to go back to 6, you just feel like something important is missing.

i use 7s for the low A for heavy ass chuggs as for a lot of people that play this genre of metal

C? i'd say C minus at best. Mark can do some decent shred work, but the fact that half the SS riffs are chug garbage, he loses a lot of marks lol. oh well, they don't care, they're both making music that people seem to love
Hans Otto yeah definitely. But still, the guys from bands like All shall perish and Thy art is Murder are way better musicians than SS.
Gus g has been in death/thrash/heavy metal bands, the man can play any style. Love his blues style solos.
DropdaLTDtoB I´ve got to admit that Mark isn´t a great guitar player but SS is a good deathcore band , even with a lots of mistakes of Mark in live solos , but with all the adrenaline and sweat and tiredness is almost impossible to play a good and clean solo .

I feel better now I'm a class C guitar player cause I can do anything Mark does. I've been known to freestyle some Class A stuff before tho. I can sweep sum Arpeggios the more difficult ones I can only sweep in one direction.

I think he means all of the strings, because often those guys will only tune town the E to a D and leave the rest in standard.
D standard means each string is tuned down a whole step, its a real term. Most people say drop D when they mean D standard which would just be dropping the low e to d
He could also be referencing if they were D standard sharp or flat, Pantera was never true D standard on a lot of far beyond driven tracks and were often times flat or sharp depending, I’m not a fan of mark but he’s not saying anything wrong or incorrectly here

Gus G said it best in my 2007 issue of Guitar World that I occasionally read on the loo, a solo should be a journey and should fit the context of a song. Not the other way around.
