I went to one for my first choice. Some are much better than others though and consider this option on a case by case basis based on your career goals.
Residency spots are funded by US taxpayers and it’s difficult for US citizens going to US medical schools, likely going on to practice in the US, to get spots. I know this post is 2 years old, but any foreign students should realize their chances at residency here are slim. Some foreign students do get accepted, but it’s ,rightfully, uncommon.
I have a question: If I ranked program M in the 12th choice on my rank list, and the program M has 8 resident positions and it ranked me in 5th choice on its rank list. Then, even if I didn’t match all my top 11 choices, I’d be matched by the program M as my 12th choice and the program M’s 5th choice. Is this correct?
Omg thank you for clarifying that there was a switch in 1995 from program to applicant-proposing. I kept hearing people insist that it was one or the other, but it seems to have been both at different points in time
I know you made a video about if step 1 theoretically changes to pass fail, but it did and now I want to see what my game plan should be entering medical school next year
I would love to see an IMG's 'guide' to the match! i know you weren't an IMG and you would probably need to outsource a lot of info but I think a video like that would be so helpful! love your content and website btw!!
It would be amazing if you could make a video for IMG’s trying to get a residency in the US especially now that the STEP1 will be p/f, which means IMGs can’t use their scores to compete with American med students.
I’m very curious as to why it matters even in special cases where the program ranks you when you are considering where to rank them? It seems that the algorithm is straight forward and it should never matter in any case.

Hello Dr. Jubbal! Could you please do a video on how the new Pass/fail system of the Step 1 is going to impact residency admissions and if/how much it will make your schools rank have a much higher weight
From personal experience reviewing resident applications, medical schools have very complex letters and reading them is like trying to figure out some sort of hieroglyphic map. And each school is different with the information that they send. And we get several thousand applicants and we only spend a minute or two on each application. Most of this time is not spent trying to figure out your class rank. So unless you’re in the top 10 of your class and this is very clearly stated in your Dean’s letter, which we also don’t really spend much time reading since you probably filled out a form telling them what to write about yourself anyway, I don’t really think it’s going to change much because frankly my friends and I are going to spend anymore time trying to decipher each schools different algorithm on where you compare to your classmates. That said, your step 2 score is going to be much much more important. And failing step one is probably going to look worse because it will be hard to see if you found it by just a little bit or a lot. Hope that helps!
Out here commenting both because this video was awesome, well-structured, and because we want to keep the RUclips gods and algorithm happy. 🤣🤣🤣 Great content once again. 🤗
Thank you for this informative video!! I just got my acceptance to me school and have been thinking about residency already and there is so much unknown about it
Thanks so much for this video! This is the most comprehensive explanation of residency matching that I have seen so far. I would definitely be interested in more videos from you about residency in general. It seems like (real) information on what to actually expect in residency (academically, professionally, and personally) is difficult to find. I have a question about the connection between the ERAS application and doing interviews at residency programs. Is the ERAS application like a medical school application where you select which schools/programs you want to inquire about, and so your application goes to them and they like you so they call you for an interview.... or are the ERAS applications just released into cyberspace and programs just randomly select students for interviews?
You explained the reason for the match being started in the first place very well. However, I still don't understand why this is viewed as a "problem." In every other field that has graduate level education, students are offered jobs early. Why does medicine have to be so special?
Just to add, some TY positions DO rank applicants without an interview if they are being considered for the advanced position. However its not the norm and is program specific
The advice from MSI and NRMP suggest that the applicant should rank programs based on his/her preference and not on how the programs rank the applicant. But let’s say if the applicant has program A as his most desired program to go and got interviewed by the program A, but the applicant felt he did very poorly during the interview thus the program A wouldn’t rank him high on the program rank list. What should the applicant do? Should the applicant still put the program A high on his rank list? Can you clarify this situation?
If I am deciding on multiple specialties, can I apply to multiple specialties or do I have to just stick to one? Just like applying to medical school, you have to use your stats to rank your school list right? Thanks for your answers.
Shivani Shastri technically you can, but it’s pretty rare to do that unless the specialties are very similar because you have to get completely separate LORs, write completely separate essays, go on different interviews, etc. It gets expensive.

You can choose what specialities to apply for at different places.
