One minor piece of clarification: You can manually raise and lower suspension. However, if you leave it on Highway, it will adjust itself automatically.
1. Pretty sure you can manually adjust the ride height or leave it to auto 2. The graphite trim is not related to the Raven update and was part of a minor interior refresh last year.
not matte black but graphite finish that was introduced last year at the same time as the oak finish in the cream interior. thanks for a great video Sean!
I have a raven LR X as well and I can confirm the suspension shenanigans also. I’ve tested it at length while religiously watching what the car is doing (or not doing) with the suspension at different settings. All you say is accurate. Unfortunately I can’t comment on comparison with old x as I’ve only test driven a couple of those. Never owned. I do feel though like this car is absolutely amazing. I’m just as amazed or more as I was when I first got my P3D.
@@stephan9487 Hows the ride on city streets is it hard/rough? My 100D (old suspension) has such a hard ride its a joke. I miss the soft ride of my mercedes
grokker99 yeah it’s very different. I recently Had a p100D as a loaner for a day and the suspension was unbearable. I live around the city in Charlotte and I couldn’t believe how much harder and less refined it was. In all fairness I get the same butt-shock when I drive my 3 after driving the X for a while. They really hit the mark with the new dynamic suspension. And I keep mine in “auto” all the time. Funny thing is my x is on 22s and the loaner I had was on 20s. 🤷🏾♂️
@@stephan9487 think is worth trading in my old Model X for the Raven Model X? Im debating between that or a Range Rover which I know will have superb ride quality.
Thanks for the video. I was not aware of the reduced cabin noise. I'm anxious to see what happens with a switch to the 2170 batteries, not only for range, but also for charging speed. I'm also hoping for an upgraded interior. I know Elon said no plans for 2170 for the S & X in a tweet in 2017. But he also said that the S & X will always have the latest technology. That has not been true. In think that is hurting sales of their cash cow, the S&X. I think they need to go that additional step to get sales back up.
Great update. Really glad they tackling the road noise as this has been a consistent negative from vehicle reviewers when comparing to the German ICE vehicles. Well done Tesla!!
Buddy you forgot v3 supercharging eligibility, autopilot 3.0/APH4, the new self driving chip, new adaptive suspension, and also the new drive train enabling more range. Disappointed you forgot these major things.
Berthoud Falls to Winter Park is a great twisty drive. Honestly also all of I-70 is, in my opinion, a highway that everyone should experience. It's scenic and a feat of engineering, although it can get busy during peak season
Hmmmm ..... just purchased a new MX right before Raven was released.... a bit regret that I should have research more before committing the delivery of MX. Sounds like cool features but the sales folks never mentioned a word about the new features coming, even I specifically asked them..... sigh
Excellent video! I don't care for the new matte black interior finish, it's probably cheaper to produce therefore looks cheaper in my opinion. I've owned both coil and air suspensions in my Model S's and really can't feel that much of a difference, both on 21's.
Tesla, (as I understand the technology) do not use permanent magnet motors in any of their cars. The new efficient motor is actually a "switched reluctance motor" which is quite different and is robust and economical? PS I think the motors do contain some permanent magnets bonded into a Halbach array which assists the functioning of this type of motor hence the confusion?
Paul Steele the full name of the front motor of the ‘Raven’ Model S and X is “switched reluctance partial permanent magnet motor with silicon carbine power electronics”. That means Tesla has embedded permanent magnets bars into the rotor glued together in a Halbach array type of arrangement.
(I work at Tesla by the way) Just to clarify the updated interior trim (matte color) was on previous non raven models at the beginning of this year. They are NOT just only on Raven models. Just wanted to clarify. :)
Kit F (Because you work in Tesla) The new suspension are the famous ClearMotion one or when they will be implemented inside Tesla’s cars ? (I saw a ClearMotion suspensions demo using model X, that caused the question)
It sounded like the adaptive suspension is NOT "active" but passive suspension. By active, the control system would keep the vehicle's main body at steady state by dynamically control the wheels' vertical movements based on realtime feedback of road condition.
Nice vid! How did he get 308 wh/mi in his 75D? I know the 100D is a good bit heavier, but I'm getting 345 wh/mi when driving pretty conservatively on long stretches of straight highway
This is not refreshed model its the old model with little changes that tesla made through the years. The new refresh version will be unveil latter this year.
Averaging something with positive and negative numbers doesn't make any sense. You should compute the sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z^2) to get the total motion and take the average in the time window of interest of that number
Happy to see the Dual Motor (underlined) badge is the new standard for Tesla performance models, makes my P3D look current. I wonder if the performance will really move to a tri-motor badge, in which case we may see for S and X a "Tria Motor" underline for Performance in that case.
Dude! This Raven update is KILLER! I wonder how long before the next major update, will these cars become unicorns like the AP1 P100D vehicles? Super exciting. Also, I love the new camera angles.
Is the performance worth 20 grand more. I'm fixing to buy a model X, Good Lord Willing, but I test drove a pirofmormance and the salesman said he could have set it on regular mode. Now I don't want to drive 3 hours to see the difference. This might be a deal breaker. SO CAN ANYONE HELP ME ON THE SPEED? I do know the performance is TRULY the fastest car I ever drove, almost got away from me. HELP!
Indeed, I can't wait to see what innovations come about from the Maxwell Technologies acquisition. It appears that the million mile battery will be enabled due to the Maxwell dry electrode deposition process. Plus, of course, it will be cheaper to build and more energy-dense. It's not a solid state battery breakthrough, but it's important nonetheless. I also noticed that Maxwell had developed an Active Suspension system that used its ultracapacitors. Seems like a natural to fit to Teslas. www.maxwell.com/solutions/transportation/auto/active-suspension

Sean Mitchell yeah. Also it will always adjust according to GPS location if you let it no matter what other setting you have selected.

It's HeighT
not
HeigTH
"th" is only "TH" when the "T" is before the "H"
In this case it's "high"- "t"
Sorry, but it bugs me!
Roger Starkey wha? But you didn’t correct the “‘more quiet” in the video? I’m surprised. “Quieter” is actually a word.
Again, I don't see how this is new. My 2018 X does this.
1. Pretty sure you can manually adjust the ride height or leave it to auto
2. The graphite trim is not related to the Raven update and was part of a minor interior refresh last year.
tesla also updated the power electronics to use more efficient Silicon Carbide based components (model 3 was the first car to use these)
Simple n sweet and to the point. That's how these RUclips videos should be. Good job men, We appreciate you.
The interior refreshes from chrome is over a year old, have it on my July 9th 2018 Model X
Per S. Jørgensen same here
I appreciate your effort and fine content. I learned a number of things. Thank you.
Good attention to detail for the raven interior changes! i wasn't aware of that.

FYI, the vibration reading is metres per second squared, it's just the metric unit for acceleration.

Yeah! Matter of fact compare the new Model X with the Model X Rave to an F-16.

So, can we assume the "raven" update applies to all Model X vehicles after 2019, or was it just the 2019 model?
Another useful video. Thank you Sean.

Berthoud Falls to Winter Park is a great twisty drive. Honestly also all of I-70 is, in my opinion, a highway that everyone should experience. It's scenic and a feat of engineering, although it can get busy during peak season
Sean, you should asked the owner to have it tested at the drag strip. Let's see it it could set the record for fastest SUV.

Hey Sean, great video.. This was very helpful. What updates do you think the 2020 Model X will have?
It sounded like the adaptive suspension is NOT "active" but passive suspension. By active, the control system would keep the vehicle's main body at steady state by dynamically control the wheels' vertical movements based on realtime feedback of road condition.
It's ACTIVE
It's the Maxwell active suspension controlled by the autopilot vectorspace

Does it make sense to compare the vibrations from a 2 year old MX to a brand new MX?
thank you very much for sharing your insights
You're welcome!
Did they fix the shudder issue?
The magnetic motors were always more efficient and durable just not as torquey
Are the tires the same brand, compound and style?
What did they do to reduce cabin noise? Super curious about that!

So. . . with respect to noise. . . we’re talking about the difference between “whoosh” and “whsh”?
What was the AVG. Speed for that 13.8 mile trip
Why is it called raven? Haven’t seen that name on the Tesla website at all

Sucks that you can't manually raise suspension. We use this feature all the time for high parking curbs, tall speed bumps, and big driveways humps.
I apologize. I did not make that very clear. You actually can adjust it manually.

Why do US consumers still buying Japanese & German dirty cars ? Are they not aware of Tesla or Model 3 ??
Much quieter, more efficient, better suspension, smoother ride, auto suspension adjustment (old 5 options settings removed), different touch screen.
