In the co-main event of UFC 94, Machida faced fellow undefeated Brazilian contender Thiago Silva. The two were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 89, but a back injury forced Silva to withdraw from the contest. UFC President Dana White indicated in the pre-fight press conference that Machida would receive a title shot with a victory, while Silva would need to defeat Machida and win one more contest before earning the same opportunity.
Lyoto Machida versus Thiago Silva, marked one of the first times in UFC history that two undefeated fighters had faced one another in a main or co-main event slot. The winner of the fight would earn a light heavyweight title shot against then-champion “Sugar” Rashad Evans.
Heading into the fight, odds makers pegged Machida as a moderate favorite. With his unorthodox Karate style, some thought him too elusive for the aggressive but slower Silva. Silva, by contrast, needed to use his aggression to push the pace, create scrambles and turn things into a dogfight. The ground game was something of an x-factor, as fans were unsure which of the two BJJ black belts would operate better on the Octagon mat. As events unfolded, there was little time spent down there.
As is his habit, Machida started out cautiously. He threw a wide variety of range-finding strikes at his opponent. Silva, unperturbed, waded through the majority of these strikes with little difficulty. By coming forward so aggressively, he planned on backing Machida into a corner and putting the pressure on the elusive contender.
But as the round unfolded, Silva became increasingly predictable to Machida. On two occasions during the first round, Machida rocked and dropped Silva with straight punches as he was coming in. Machida was too fast and his timing was too sharp for Silva.
With a few seconds remaining in the opening round, Machida pushed a clinching Silva away from him against the cage and dropped him with a straight punch down the middle. Machida then dropped down onto Silva just before the bell rang, and knocked him out cold with a follow-up shot. The knockout was so sudden and so unexpected that many fans did not even realize the fight was over until the in-cage celebration began. - Развлечения
"Losing to Machida like that hurt my soul." - Thiago Silva
It did more than that to Thiago. That loss practically ended his career as Thiago was never the same fighter again after losing lopsidedly to Lyoto.
@@DragonHeart613 That was his first loss and it was pretty early in his career. The reason he wasnt the same is because he wasnt fighting bums anymore and he couldn't compete with them
Inevitable
Good vs. Evil
One of the craziest finishes of all time. I was a big fan of both these guys at the time, both whom were undefeated. You had the Karate wizard in Machida who had won all his matches by decision. Then you had the rugged Muay Thai thug in Silva who had mauled everyone in his path.
What I didn’t expect was Machida completely outclassing Silva the way he did. It was such a lopsided bout and ended in a brutal KO at the end of the very first round. The worst loss Thiago ever had but a great moment for Lyoto that immediately placed him in the title picture.
Absolutely zero karate was used to win that fight.
@@cliffbooth7075 but it was
Machida had already beaten Bonnar, Dimitri, and Frankly by TKO, and McDonald and Sokodjou by submission before this fight.
@@cliffbooth7075 Ummmm do you enjoy trolling ? Machida's karate is what Thiago found difficult to deal with.
Lyoto essentially ended Thiago's career with this fight. Thiago was never the same fighter after Lyoto completely outclassed him. Thiago was one of the scariest up & coming fighters at that time & might've gone on to challenge for UFC gold had he not crashed right into The Dragon. Thiago went completely downhill after his loss to Lyoto.
Always one of my favorite machida finishes this and the cb dolloway ko
LHW Machida was a beast. Should have stayed there in my opinion. Lost a ton of his power moving down to 185
In his punches yeah but he still kicked hard as fuck down at mw. Weidman said he kicked very hard and look what he did to CB Dolloway & Munoz too
Agreed.
Yes, a reasonable argument that going down was a mistake.
Is this the ultimate MMA fight between
Good an Evil in the biz? Not including guys
like Jo Son and Chris Benoit..
This was perfection
this fight is such a fucking badass performance by machida
both guys came in at 12 or 13 and 0 and machida just murked silva...I think it was a number 1 contender fight
dropped him twice and then scored that buzzer beater finish...the way he just threw him to the ground and smashed his head into the canvas was alpha af...didn't touch gloves at the beginning of the fight either...seemed like machida didn't like him...maybe thiago was talking shit or trying to pull some thug shit in the buildup to the fight
one of the most dominant performances in ufc history
My all time favorite UFC fight, simply because Silva was such a thug and he really had a beating coming to him. I knew when the fight was announced Silva's days of making his opponents look bad were over. For a two year window, Lyoto Machida was an unbeatable fighter.
Pure domination
Isso é q é luta!
Essa luta de lítio foi um orgulho para o shotokam
👍machida
I really no anderstand. The boy gain of more strong lost to the weakest.
That was worse that Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin
Machida vs Weidman))))
lyoto beat thiago the same way as thiago beat his own wife 😮
To be fair he caught her in the act of cheating and he beat both her and her lover >.>
Wait - is this legit ? I've never head this.
end of his UFC career too..what a crime shame
@@yodhin79 yea after this Dana white fired and banned him and made it so he couldn’t fight anymore in the USA idk if it’s still up but also he had trouble finding work as a coach aftwrwards but Jones and McGreggor assaulted ppl and got in trouble more than him and they still kept their jobs with the ufc
@@Jewel_Screaming_Chango8387than he is a man ✊🏻
My respect. He should’ve break her fkn face for cheating
Isso é que dar Thiago ter ido lutar chapado de maconha..As vezes faz é atrapalhar
shogun vs machida 2
He mostly run around, like Gustaffson
No, Machida was a legit tough guy who knew how to use angles.
Silva was 11-0 at that point, and Machida made him look bad that entire fight.
He didn't kick Silva's ass by "running around".
Awful take. You know there's a fence right? There's only so far to 'run'.
LOL What are you talking about ? Machida has given us some of the greatest T/KOs in history. He's one of the greatest and hall of fame worthy.
So this Machida guy fought a nobody and everyone got excited? Fabian Edwards is also a nobody yet he put Machida to sleep.
thiago silva was top 5 at the time. machida is like 44 now
@@minmodsefa Thiago Silva is a nobody.
@@michaelneilvalencia2205 lol he wasnt back then, look at his record around 2009
So you started watching MMA in 2014. Cool.
@@LumpyAdams been watching since Pride days. Try harder next time.
Did you know that Lyoto could not even KO a smaller BJ Penn whose record today is 16-14?
