That nostalgia. I was 9 when the X box came out. My dad was waiting for us to come home from school and showed us halo for the first time down stairs in the basement. Halo is quite literally responsible for my interests, which is in turn responsible for my career choice, which is responsible for how I met my wife, whom is responsible for my kids, who are responsible for me buying a series x that lands on the front porch tomorrow, which responsible for leading me to this video. Thanks Xbox

Make sure your xbox isn't one of the ones with the bad clock capacitors. I think there is a wikipage out there somewhere so you look it up based on the manufacturing date or serial #. Because if it one of the bad ones then it'll leak onto the motherboard and potentially ruin your investment. You can get someone to replace it which is fairly simple

Please do this console a favor and open it up and REMOVE that clock capacitor. Hopefully it didn't leak already. All motherboard revisions from version 1.0 to 1.5 (Latest being 1.6 and 1.6b which no longer have this capacitor.) have that capacitor and are guaranteed to leak and cause major damage to the board by leaking corrosive fluid onto the board damaging traces etc... LOVE the vid. Cannot tell you how many times I saw that startup screen growing up. Xbox Live 1.0 and Halo 2 were the best things ever in 2004. Crimson Skies was also an amazing title to be playing online at the time.

First thing you have to do is remove the battery capacitor. That one capacitor is already leaking acid into the motherboard. So look up a video and remove it asap!
Get isopropyl alcohol 99.9% to clean the leaked acid and you can remove the capacitor by twisting it off or by desoldering it if you know how. The capacitor is ONLY for the time and date to be kept after it’s been unplugged. Make sure it’s a 1.5 or under. If that’s a 1.6 you don’t have to do anything.

I've modded like 30 of these things over the years for friends & whatnot, I've never seen the clock cap prevent disk reads, seen them corrode through the front traces for the power & disk tray buttons along with some controller port traces, even seen 1 eat into nearest RAM chip but that just resulted in a red & green flashing error with no output.
But yeah, never seen it just stop disk reading.
Actually, in all the consoles I've worked on, all of them had leaked, BUT only 3 had system killing corrosion, which was repairable, with exception of that RAM chip, although, if I had a proper workshop, even it could probably have been repaired.

  • @alterbr33d

The original Xbox does officially support CD ripping (no mods). You'd rip your CDs to the hard drive and many games supported playing the ripped CDs. The games would play them like their own tracks like if you'd change levels it'd change ripped tracks. Also it does support native 720p and 16:9 widescreen in many but not all games, but you need to configure that in the Xbox menu, you just had it stretched, the menu supports 16:19 so you'd see more on the sides, the startup doesn't support 16:9. You can look up a list of games that support 720p and or 16:9. I've tried 720p on an Xbox OG for the first time its not that bad especially on a smaller display, crazy you could have seen that 20 years ago.

@Green Mamba Games Well if they don't open them they will become almost worthless as the clock capacitor will destroy them if not dealt with and for that you need to unbox it and remove the capacitor...

P.s. the battery capacitor has nothing to do with the disc UNLESS it’s a version 1.6.
Please don’t let that beautiful system sit while it’s leaking acid. I posted another comment with what you’ll have to do to fix it. However if that’s a version 1.6 you’ll have to desolder the capacitor and solder on a new one. They’re like $6.00 and take no more than 30 mins if you know what you’re doing. I have the Halo Special Edition version 1.5 so I just yanked it out and it worked fine, but 1.6 must be have a battery capacitor soldered back on. Watch a RUclips video with instructions if you know how to do that. I don’t, but you can find people that do as well. Computer repair shops can solder it for you too!

I just dug out my old OG xbox a couple of days ago along with my ps2 and N64, I haven't run them in years and all three systems are still working. I tested the xbox with Morrowind and i still had a save on the harddrive from 2005 and it loaded up fine. I've still got some old dance tunes ripped from CD on the machine too.

The coolest thing about xbox was the fact that you could rip cd's directly onto it. I had a PlayStation and still ended up getting it because of that. Was dope as hell back then to listen to your music while playing halo, or your favorite game.

At a minimum, he'll need to tear the clock capacitor out. He definitely needs to open it up, though. That cap has probably already leaked somewhat.

  • @LordRayken
    @LordRayken 3 года назад +1

Hey, be aware that you need to remove the clock capacitor. They all leak and permanently destroy the xbox motherboard. Xbox was manufactured during a capacitor plague. It doesn't matter if it's brand new. You have to do it or it just won't ever turn on eventually.

    • @LordRayken

Cool unboxing, by the looks of that model it might be a 1.2 or 1.3 revision, you might want to get that clock capacitor removed if you to preserve its longevity.

I do not believe that Microsoft sold this console at a loss. I've owned everything from Atari 2600, NES, Coleco-vision, etc. NES should be my favorite, but I really loved my original xbox. This generation brought real cinematic gaming experiences and easy saves.

To be frank, as you began the unboxing I had a reservation about the flux capacitor issue, but I said I wasn't going to spoil your fun by commenting before seeing if yours was able to scale through the issue or not.
But in the end, it did, not a bummer. Just take your time, take out the capacitor and do another video on the top 10 games you've been enjoying on the OG Xbox.
I look forward to seeing that video - cool background music by the way.

Halo 2 was the best game ever! I had three of these consoles networked up in my bachelor pad back in the day. I remember the original Halo being able to network via XB Connect. I also remember a very sad day, the day they shut down the servers to play Halo 2 on Xbox live.

I always liked that satisfying click when you would put the controller in the Xbox. Even on the back when you put the video wires in , just something about the way it always clicked.
I still have my original Xbox my mom bought me , she passed in 2010 and I couldn’t bring myself to ever try to get rid of it.
Cool video , brought back some cool memories.

I always wished I got one. Since PS3 took a while, I got gifted a Xbox 360 later on. I was always a PS guy mainly due to my friends. But I sold it after a year to afford a PS3. I still wanna get a Xbox to play lots of games I missed and still wanna play.

One tip for opening any sealed boxes, use a hot hairdryer on the seal and it will allow you to peel it away without damaging it, and if you want to reseal it again warm with a hairdryer and place label back on. It may go back on without reheating it, but it's more likely to curl up and peel away if you don't.
