It is unbelievable that they completely disassembled it and reassembled it from 2016 to early 2019 for the restoration. They must have needed a building the size of a football field for it disassembled. Incredible.
I live in Roseville and visited this magnificent locomotive. It was here 2 1/2 days and thousands of people came to see it. If it comes near you...go see this giant American machine!
A magnificent machine! My hat is off to the UP steam crew who keep the Big Boy running such a long way from its home for all people to see,a job very well done.
Wish I still lived in Roseville, at least to get a look at a Big Boy up close. I got to see the UP 3985, the Challenger when she was parked at Roseville and SP's 4449, Daylight painted engine at the first Railfair. Thanks for the video, brought back memories.
I have chased big boy five times since 2019 recently at the beginning of this journey saw it in ROCK SPRINGS WYOMING JULY 2 and Watch it leave Green River Wyoming. It never gets old I have this train in my blood chase it when I can love it. I love trains thanks to my father a telegrapher for DENVER RIO GRANDE RAILROAD FOR 42 YEARS HE IS gone but his love of trains lives on in myself and my brother! LOVE THE 4014! !
Southern Pacific cab-forward locomotives climbed the Sierras back in the 1940s, but the Big Boys never did. Back then, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific were two different railroads. I'm sure that going over the Sierras in a cab-forward locomotive was an awesome experience, though.
Union Pacific "Big Boys" were only used on freight trains between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was to save money. Only needed one steam locomotive and crew instead of two.
I'm from Placer County (Auburn), now in Twin Falls, ID-I've been watching videos of the 4014 crossing the country the past few weeks. What I would give to be in Roseville, CA, to witness this!!!!!
It's hard to imagine how big these engines are until you actually stand next to one. The only one I have seen up close is #4023, which is in Kenefick Park, Omaha, NE. You can see it has you head west on I-80, crossing from Iowa, into Nebraska. To be able to see one in motion would be amazing.
UP 4014 is probably the largest _successful_ steam locomotive ever built. There may be larger historically but most of them have various faults, unlike the quite reliable Big Boys.
@@ericemmons3040 pressure is wt divided by area. The rails get a point load that is spread over the ties and ballast to the ground below. the train has 24 wheels I think and is about 130 feet long so if you want, do the calcs. I am too lazy
@@jamescoe4765 Usually, the major calculation for a locomotive or railroad car is tons per axle; I've never heard of pressure of each wheel on the tracks being a measurement that's done, although I guess it COULD be done. The Big Boy with tender is about 132 feet long; it weighs about 600 tons. Engine and tender together have 19 axles: 12 for engine, 7 for tender. Dividing 600 by 19 gives an average weight per axle of around 31.5 tons, which is within proper load specifications for Class One railroads, whose track should be able to withstand a loading of around 35 or a bit more tons per axle. If we look at the number of wheels, I guess that means that each wheel is supporting an average weight of 15/16 tons per wheel, although I'm not sure if that's a useful calculation. . .
They should have backed up the engine more, they stoped short of the viewing area, glad I didn't drive for hours to see a part or a Train. Had the cops there for all the out of control train folks..
Interesting they used the UP Western Pacific SD70ACE heritage unit as the helper on the former Western Pacific line on the way to Sacramento. So will the UP use the Southern Pacific SD70ACE heritage unit as the helper when 4014 goes from Sacramento to Sparks Nevada on the return trip? It'll be cool seeing 4014 going up and over Donner Pass, which is no stranger to big articulated steamers, as that was the former playground of the SP Cab Forward locos, which were almost as big as the Big Boy.
Here’s another video of Big Boy receiving maintenance.

Same and one of my friends was there
What a magnificent behemoth! A marvel of engineering for it's time. Thanks to everyone involved and UP for bringing it back to life. Roll on Big Boy!
After all these videos, after all these years, seeing a Big Boy still running is incredible. Never thought or imagined it could still happen today.
I drove down from Silver Springs Nevada to see this. No regrets, its was amazing.
I just got this Big boy in north Bend, NE! Sept 2, 2024. Great vid, new sub
Nice touch having the Western Pacific loco in the consist.
I love that Heritage unit. It’s cool just like big boy.

Must have been quite an adventure climbing the Sierra's riding this train back in the 40's! What an awesome unit!

OUTSTANDING, great shots.
He's clean as a whistle. Lucky people, I wish I was there.
My dad and I are headed down there tomorrow from Grass Valley basically first thing in the morning, and we'll catch her stop in Colfax on Sunday.
Beautiful, I was there that day and chased it thru Quincy.

Glorious
I ll say it s an awesome unit number 1
Unglaubliche Lok.
I can't stop laughing at those people recording video vertically 😂
👍
The only "Big Boy" i ever seen in person, was Union Pacific #4012 on display over in Scranton,PA. ( Steamtown U.S.A. )
Does it go back over the Donner Pass, if so when will that happen?

What is the pressure on the tracks?
If by that you mean tonnage, the Big Boy with tender weighs about 600 tons. . .

I can t over the size of that thing They don t call it Big Boy for nothing

I use to volunteer at NCTM. People are not thinking about safety.
Well just never know do you number 997 ?
hello
Well I m happy for you averageguy 7136 Something to really look forward to Well you have a nice time
Too close to the rails 25 feet from the locomotives.
Let Union Pacific handle it Karen!

I doubt that UP will run 4014 over Donner Pass. Donner Pass can get busy, and the Feather River Route has far gentler grades, too.
@@Sacto1654 It's headed to Truckee on Sunday.
Yes, it will also stop in Colfax and then Truckee on Sunday. It would be great if UP used #1996 on this run......
Come see lucastrainverse!
