- Exercise is an important part of taking care of yourself and your wellbeing. Just like everyone else, where possible, people with lupus need to exercise regularly or engage in some kind of movement. It’s very important to recognise that lupus affects everybody differently and so not everyone with lupus can do a wide range of exercises, but most people with lupus can take part in some form of activity. It is also important to realise that the amount of activity you can manage is likely to fluctuate as your lupus does. Not all of these exercises are suitable for everyone - consult your GP if you need advice about which ones are suitable for you.

I usually weightlifted 3x or 4x a week (before the pandemic) and it wasn't light weight it was heavy but I felt fine! I just make sure I warm up first!

Do you have advice for people who get severe muscle cramps? I get them all over my body. My neck, my tongue, hands, hamstrings, stomach muscles, calf, feet. Sometimes shin muscles.

Can anyone show me a study that demonstrates that high levels of physical exercise can lead to lupus flares? Thanks in advance!
I'm afraid I don't have a link to a study demonstrating this at present - it is likely an under-researched area. We have certainly been informed of anecdotal reports from patients who have had this experience however. From my experience this is predominantly in those who try to do "too much, too soon". Baseline fitness levels could therefore be an important consideration.

It is important to do some regular physical activity to assist with weight loss and therefore these exercises would probably be better than doing nothing, but weight loss isn't the main aim of these particular exercises. These are intended to help improve and/or maintain flexibility and movement in the joints and muscles to prevent deconditioning.
