I agree. Besides, baseball is based on 3s: 3 outs, 3 strikes, 3 bases, 3 being the square root of 9 (9 innings, 9 men on the field, 9 batters in the lineup).
For the Dodgers one, batter info does pop up at the start of the at bat. I wouldn’t mind if they kept it onscreen the entire time. It does offer a lot of relevant info. And if they did the same for the pitcher (on the bottom) that would be nice too. And as for the top/bottom of the inning and the three dots for outs, I think it’s aesthetically more pleasing that it fills up the box and doesn’t show dead space.
I prefer the teams to be listed one over the other. It goes back to a classic baseball scoreboard where every inning score is listed. With it, you instantly know the visiting team and the home team, and in fact you already know if it’s the top or the bottom of the inning.
16:04 For the SNLA scorebug, the top part of it does show the batter position number and last name with batting AVG, HR, & RBI. It also has the "0 for 1" part (i.e.) and the batter's previous result during the game "SINGLE, HR, DOUBLE" (i.e) in the same box. I've might not seen the pitcher info part. The lower right of the small square shows pitches, pitch clock, and the pitch speed.
I like the Cubs and the Mets the best. Nice clean square with easy to read graphics. I personally like the extra space so everything is not overcrowded. Its easier to read, or maybe I’m just showing my age.🤣
This one thing that I like about the NESN and SportsNet Pittsburgh (which are exactly the same in operation, just different colors) is that they are unobtrusive: they don’t scream at you. Being compact, they don’t not get in the way and take up very little space. The pitcher line does change between velocity and pitch count.

Love this! I once made a post about 10-12 years ago grading all the CF camera shots across all the stadiums/RSN’s. People thought I was insane but seeing Brodie do this I feel right at home haha. I don’t have a strong opinion one way or another about the scorebugs because basically they give you all the same info. As for the pitches being delivered there are still several RSN’s that don’t show what type of pitch it is (Dodgers/SNLA is one of them). My view on that particular nugget has changed as the pitch tracking data is more accurate now. As for a potential other video you could take my idea from years ago and grade the CF camera shots! I definitely have a strong opinion on those, I hate the dead-center cameras (particularly the one in Texas) because they’re too high and it relegates the strike zone to a tiny portion of your screen (makes the break on a slider look tiny).
When I saw what Brodie pointed out in the NBC Sports Scorebug I was like Oh ..they didn't! and laughed ..oh no! When I saw what they did spelling out POOP that is just tacky and yet hilarious at the same time.
I'm definitely biased because I'm a Rangers fan but I love the Bally Sports bug/bar. It definitely gives news channel vibes, but a lot of the time they have things like promotions/giveaways coming up at Globe Life Field in addition to the baseball news stuff. It also helps that they use the same bug for Dallas Mavericks and Stars games, so everything is nice and uniform haha
I’ve never liked only having the two dots. Baseball has three outs. I know you’ll never see the third out. But, intuitively, it always made more sense to light up however many out of three.
Because once the 3rd out happens, they just clear the count and outs. What would be the point of highlighting a third out only for it to immediately go away?
Only 2 outs are relevant for a game situation. You need to get the 3rd out, but there will never be a “runner on 2nd, 3 outs, top of the 5th”. It’s clutter
Mets fan here. I agree too much wasted space. I think that a simpler way to resolve this is compressing the bug a couple of pixels and adding the player’s first initial with the last name.
I think I favor SNY's version for simplicity. Ballys and their crawler just suck. Sportsnet Toronto would be ideal, IF they sucked the SN logo out of the box, put it to the side where it should be, or assuming they already have a network bug in the bottom of the screen (can't remember how Canadian local TV is formatted) just leave it at that. Make an entire column on the right, and move a lot of the situationals over there...Brodie having fun with his e-crayons... 😃...Yeah, back in the day you didn't want the scores up all the time because they obliterated the entire bottom half of the picture. Character generators were clunky, and I really hated it when they used yellow on the font... 😬...DOG really improved the viewing experience for sure...What's all this about Oakland hanging a 20 burger on Miami?? Ooooh, lordy! Fisher's gonna be having a sale soon!... 🤬..."Sell 'em before they get good!"...
I think you missed (or just didn’t mention) one of my favorite things about the YES Network scorebug. The man on base icons as well as the count and inning and everything on the right side changes color to match the team currently batting. In the example you showed, that information was all green because the A’s were up to bat. When the Yankees bat it is all shown in a dark blue.
@brodiebrazil, I agree with you on the Bally one. I love that it takes up the bottom edge. It minimizes the space the scorebug takes up so we can see more of the game. But we don't need the scores and news of other teams that aren't part of the broadcast. Hopefully the bankruptcy they're going through gives us a better scorebug next year.

Super-duper HD TVs have made it so easy to put a lot of information into these boxes that would've been washed out in the SD days. Another reason to love HD! The empty spaces don't bother me too much but the Bally's ticker does. When I'm watching a game I don't need baseball news from other teams taking up screen real estate, even if it 'is' on the bottom.
I love analysis of scorebugs. Would like something similar for hockey (by network or historical evolution) if you ever get around to it. Sportnet Pittsburgh and NESN are essentially the same, which is why their scorebug is the same. I think it was a downgrade for hockey when the Penguins went from the Root/AT&T look (which I really like for hockey) to the bland NESN look. Speaking of Root, I don’t like how Root puts the outs on a different row from balls and strikes. Seems out of place to me. I do also really like the NBC Sports look. The font sizes emphasize the important stuff without clutter, and the pitch clock in reverse text avoids the gridline look used by many other scorebugs. The wide-but-short rectangle is also less obtrusive than the taller, more square scorebugs. YES has a similar overall shape to NBC, but I’m not bothered by the logo and team abbreviation, since that gives rooms for the names below which are grouped so the the team. I like it. On the matter of outs, I prefer 3 circles/boxes, not 2, since there are 3 outs in a half-inning (even if gameplay never progresses with 3 outs) - maybe the third is just up for a short time, just as “End of Regulation” or “0:00” is briefly shown on other sports. Overall a nice video - one I really enjoyed.
I design in-venue scoring layouts (think stadium videoboard). I have a lot of fun with how to present information. It’s also interesting with the sheer amount of information there is in this day, you want to show what matters without showing too much that it feels like it’s being shoved in your face. I always use the name “STRANGE-GORDON” for home placeholders and “SALTALAMACCHIA” for away placeholders to ensure there is enough space for info. Although for more in-venue displays compared to TV, the text can “squeeze” into an area so maybe I want to have enough space for say, “Schwartzshire” (a pretty long name but not ridiculous), who when Saltalamacchia does come up, it’s visible, not extended, just a tiny bit smaller width. The last thing that people don’t think about is monospacing. This is more for clock sports, especially those with tenths of a second in the last minute (basketball and hockey). If the text is centered and the font isn’t monospaced (that’s to say that 22.2 would be far wider that 11.1 because it is wider), then every tenth of a second, the text moves due to the total width changing. Which means 22.2 to 22.1 to 22.0 will appear jitterery. Most softwares can put extra space in the skinny numbers so that it’s the same as others. Monospacing isn’t always required, but when you have constantly changing data, or lots of data lined up numerically, it’s a small touch that can make it seem far more professional.
One of my favorite all time games was a 1979 game between the Cubs & Phillies where the Cubs scored 22 - and lost. Phillies scored 23. That game was replayed in full a few years back on MLB Network, and the lack of a score bug stuck out to me. You'd go a few batters before getting any kind of overlaid info. I get where you're coming from with that.

I personally don't care if scorebugs indicate the third out or not. I'm also more of a fan of team abbreviation and logo being present. You bring up a great point with dead space in between data though like the BlueJays scorebug.
Brodie, what about scorebugs for other sports? For me, the Warriors one is super awkward because the scores are listed top and bottom, but drop down info is listed left and right. Sucks when both teams are wearing the same colors
I have a lot of hot takes for scorebugs. First it should absolutely have three lights for outs. They also shouldn’t show the batter’s ‘0 for 2 tonight’ stat on there in a way which can be confused for the count. It shouldn’t take up the entire bottom third like those awful Bally Sports broadcasts. The logos also shouldn’t be different when one team is wearing their city connects or whatever, like the Reds broadcast I think uses a completely different logo that takes too long to recognise in highlights packages or whatever (and that example with Baltimore you pointed out) And idk if anyone has ever actually done this, but i’d love it if the ‘someone on base’ light could move with the baserunner, so it’s easier to actually keep track of where each baserunner is during a play where for example, the camera is tracking a ball in play in the outfield. Biased but I like Root’s as a Mariners fan. Apple has the best in the business though. Oh and as a NASCAR fan, the NBC graphics do always feel very familiar to me, very nice and clean.
NBC’s RSNs really need to update their overall in game graphics. I know they tweaked the score bug recently, but overall it makes the broadcast look stale as they’ve been using the same for about 15 years or so.
Why do you like the Cubs one with no count displayed? You said that the MPH switches out with the pitch clock so that leaves no area for the current count. It also has no real room to identify pitch.
Biased being a Yankees fan, but not only are the originator, I still think they are the best. I think they were one of the first to integrate the pitch type info, and showing the pitch sequencing for long at bats. Also, having the player name directly under the corresponding team means I don’t have to figure out which team is at bat and which is pitching. And to further help, the color of the baserunner squares are that team’s primary color. Just a nice little touch. PS - Love this video! I think about a lot of the same things, and hate score bugs that don’t give me all the information.
I think watching an entire at bat would give you a better perspective on every scorebug. Taking a still frame of something that animates into different things seems a little unfair
On the NESN one, I just noticed that the pitcher info is missing. Who is it and what's the pitch count? Or does it rotate in and out with the last pitch?
The thing that gets me with the 3-letter team identifiers is that they're not consistent across all broadcasters - For example, Washington Nationals being represented as either "WSH" or "WAS" or the Chicago White Sox being "CWS" or "CHW"
Idk about everyone else’s but I’m sick of our broadcast (Sportsnet Pittsburgh) they don’t show the stats for the player batting until the 3rd or 4th pitch. Most of the time we don’t even get see them because they’ve gotten a hit, out or whatever outcome happens. My buddies and I ALL HATE IT. It makes no sense to not show stats 3-4 pitches in. 65% of the time we don’t even get to see them. It’s awful.
On the Ballys they should chuck the right hand side and put the pitch batter infor there. It would be cleaner and more relevant for the game if you hav eto use the whole bottom of the screen. I think have the network logo looks stupid.
I hate, hate, hate the Bally's scorebug because of that constant news scroll. I watch a lot of hockey and will always choose a non Bally's feed if I have an option.
I may be biased because I'm in Philly, but I like NBC Sports' bug best. It's all the info you need in the least obtrusive design. It just needs to be modernized with a flat design - remove the thin gray end caps and the gradients on everything.
To be honest, score bugs should help the viewer understand the info and periodically develop a story with situational stats. If I’m watching the game, I’d rather a “lower third” show me between pitches some more detailed stats. The broadcasters are there to help us with that. I don’t need more numbers to be redundant.
ESPN graphics overall violate most principles. Watching an NHL power play on ESPN is nearly unwatchable with player names floating all over the screen.
How so for nba? I agree on hockey, but it’s simplistic, and informative. And the bottom part switches between TOL/timeouts, stat blips, and other general game info. I don’t think it steals the show
@samschwartz5824 for espn nba games, the scoreboard bug takes up the entire middle third of the screen. It works for football but very overwhelming when watching the nba
Lots of the extra info is overkill. The broadcasters help us with numbers that matter that aren’t pertinent to the game. If they want to do an alternative “no-commentators, only venue noise” which I would love for so many other reason, then yes, more info = better. But as long as someone is speaking while I am watching, it’s my eyes to watch the action, and their voice to tell me what the extra numbers are and why they matter.
Can the dots follow runners on base on a moving, live action look? Like, if a baserunner steals, the dots will move in real time. Too high techie? Would be easy to follow.
NBC Sports is really good, although the POOP problem is kinda bad. On the other side, the Bally bar SUCKS. It's so ugly and bulky. Really hoping this is the last season we have to suffer through it. I will say, I like having the abbreviation for teams still, especially when they're using odd logos for City Connect jerseys and such. YES Network gets it right.
I preferred the original scorebugs that only showed the score and the inning. The rest can be gleaned from the commentators.....Unless your name is Joe Buck.
Three circles make it easy to figure out that it’s tallying something that there’s three of. Obviously, you only need two circles and a bit of context, but a third circle can make quick interpretation smoother the first time you see a particular scorebug.

Although for more in-venue displays compared to TV, the text can “squeeze” into an area so maybe I want to have enough space for say, “Schwartzshire” (a pretty long name but not ridiculous), who when Saltalamacchia does come up, it’s visible, not extended, just a tiny bit smaller width. The last thing that people don’t think about is monospacing. This is more for clock sports, especially those with tenths of a second in the last minute (basketball and hockey). If the text is centered and the font isn’t monospaced (that’s to say that 22.2 would be far wider that 11.1 because it is wider), then every tenth of a second, the text moves due to the total width changing. Which means 22.2 to 22.1 to 22.0 will appear jitterery. Most softwares can put extra space in the skinny numbers so that it’s the same as others. Monospacing isn’t always required, but when you have constantly changing data, or lots of data lined up numerically, it’s a small touch that can make it seem far more professional.

I miss the 2005-07 FSN scorebug
One of my favorite all time games was a 1979 game between the Cubs & Phillies where the Cubs scored 22 - and lost. Phillies scored 23.
That game was replayed in full a few years back on MLB Network, and the lack of a score bug stuck out to me. You'd go a few batters before getting any kind of overlaid info. I get where you're coming from with that.
I wish pitch count and velo were always visible, not alternating. Also seeing a pitch type sequencing for each at bat would be nice.

I personally don't care if scorebugs indicate the third out or not. I'm also more of a fan of team abbreviation and logo being present. You bring up a great point with dead space in between data though like the BlueJays scorebug.
Brodie, what about scorebugs for other sports? For me, the Warriors one is super awkward because the scores are listed top and bottom, but drop down info is listed left and right. Sucks when both teams are wearing the same colors
I have a lot of hot takes for scorebugs. First it should absolutely have three lights for outs. They also shouldn’t show the batter’s ‘0 for 2 tonight’ stat on there in a way which can be confused for the count. It shouldn’t take up the entire bottom third like those awful Bally Sports broadcasts. The logos also shouldn’t be different when one team is wearing their city connects or whatever, like the Reds broadcast I think uses a completely different logo that takes too long to recognise in highlights packages or whatever (and that example with Baltimore you pointed out)
And idk if anyone has ever actually done this, but i’d love it if the ‘someone on base’ light could move with the baserunner, so it’s easier to actually keep track of where each baserunner is during a play where for example, the camera is tracking a ball in play in the outfield.
Biased but I like Root’s as a Mariners fan. Apple has the best in the business though.
Oh and as a NASCAR fan, the NBC graphics do always feel very familiar to me, very nice and clean.
They need that name bar for longer named players, such as Encarnacion-Strand or Woods-Richardson.

NBC’s RSNs really need to update their overall in game graphics. I know they tweaked the score bug recently, but overall it makes the broadcast look stale as they’ve been using the same for about 15 years or so.

Why do you like the Cubs one with no count displayed? You said that the MPH switches out with the pitch clock so that leaves no area for the current count. It also has no real room to identify pitch.

Biased being a Yankees fan, but not only are the originator, I still think they are the best. I think they were one of the first to integrate the pitch type info, and showing the pitch sequencing for long at bats. Also, having the player name directly under the corresponding team means I don’t have to figure out which team is at bat and which is pitching. And to further help, the color of the baserunner squares are that team’s primary color. Just a nice little touch.
PS - Love this video! I think about a lot of the same things, and hate score bugs that don’t give me all the information.
As someone with a plasma tv still, there's nothing I hate more than bright white on a sports bug. The burn-in fear is so strong.
As a Phillies fan, I wish they used the Phillies bell logo on the board. This would avoid our issues when facing Pirates.

The thing that gets me with the 3-letter team identifiers is that they're not consistent across all broadcasters - For example, Washington Nationals being represented as either "WSH" or "WAS" or the Chicago White Sox being "CWS" or "CHW"

Idk about everyone else’s but I’m sick of our broadcast (Sportsnet Pittsburgh) they don’t show the stats for the player batting until the 3rd or 4th pitch. Most of the time we don’t even get see them because they’ve gotten a hit, out or whatever outcome happens. My buddies and I ALL HATE IT. It makes no sense to not show stats 3-4 pitches in. 65% of the time we don’t even get to see them. It’s awful.
On the Ballys they should chuck the right hand side and put the pitch batter infor there. It would be cleaner and more relevant for the game if you hav eto use the whole bottom of the screen. I think have the network logo looks stupid.
I think the NESN score bug is trying to look like the scoreboard on the Green Monster.
I hate, hate, hate the Bally's scorebug because of that constant news scroll. I watch a lot of hockey and will always choose a non Bally's feed if I have an option.

I may be biased because I'm in Philly, but I like NBC Sports' bug best. It's all the info you need in the least obtrusive design. It just needs to be modernized with a flat design - remove the thin gray end caps and the gradients on everything.

To be honest, score bugs should help the viewer understand the info and periodically develop a story with situational stats. If I’m watching the game, I’d rather a “lower third” show me between pitches some more detailed stats. The broadcasters are there to help us with that. I don’t need more numbers to be redundant.
ESPN's nba score bug violates so many of these principles
ESPN graphics overall violate most principles. Watching an NHL power play on ESPN is nearly unwatchable with player names floating all over the screen.

How so for nba? I agree on hockey, but it’s simplistic, and informative. And the bottom part switches between TOL/timeouts, stat blips, and other general game info. I don’t think it steals the show
@samschwartz5824 for espn nba games, the scoreboard bug takes up the entire middle third of the screen. It works for football but very overwhelming when watching the nba

Lots of the extra info is overkill. The broadcasters help us with numbers that matter that aren’t pertinent to the game. If they want to do an alternative “no-commentators, only venue noise” which I would love for so many other reason, then yes, more info = better. But as long as someone is speaking while I am watching, it’s my eyes to watch the action, and their voice to tell me what the extra numbers are and why they matter.
Can the dots follow runners on base on a moving, live action look?

NBC Sports is really good, although the POOP problem is kinda bad. On the other side, the Bally bar SUCKS. It's so ugly and bulky. Really hoping this is the last season we have to suffer through it. I will say, I like having the abbreviation for teams still, especially when they're using odd logos for City Connect jerseys and such. YES Network gets it right.
I preferred the original scorebugs that only showed the score and the inning. The rest can be gleaned from the commentators.....Unless your name is Joe Buck.

Pet peeve: using three circles for the outs counter.
Three circles make it easy to figure out that it’s tallying something that there’s three of. Obviously, you only need two circles and a bit of context, but a third circle can make quick interpretation smoother the first time you see a particular scorebug.
