It’s amazing how much Yi Sun Sun singlehandedly impacted history. A Japanese Empire the size it reached in 1939 but in the year 1600 would have been a major game changer.
I read the title and shocked :|. Fortunately and eventually, the fate made him being remembered as one or maybe the greatest hero of Korea, saved his nation. But the betrayal, stupid official, jealousy, and incompetent officers made his life seems miserable sad, not forgetting many of his kin killed by Japanese. I am cried for his burden. He is indeed a strong man :)
It is nice to learn about the mistakes of Korean government. One thing I never knew when I was young, even though I am a Korean myself, was how those incompetent admirals were responsible for the invasion. I don't think I learn that in my school. Thank you for being neutral in that regard. It is more important to know the truth than the sweet biased lies.

Historical examples are aplenty when it comes to kings or leaders becoming suspicious of capable generals with high reputation and military power, and ended up purging them after their job was done. ancient ones like general Han Xin from Chu-Han contention or others from the three kingdoms era come to mind.

Konish and Kato were arch rivals to each other; they were as different as they could have been. Konish was diplomat-type and Kato was warrior-type. Konishi was Christian and Kato was Buddhist. But both were highly competent commanders and I just can't imagine they put their personal feelings before the country. This episode shows the greatest enemy often exists inside.

If you look at this history of all counties you see civil wars. USA, England, France, Germany, Rome, and japan etc etc all had many many internal conflicts. Korea is not unique.

Thank you, Jae Wook Lee! I am a great admirer of Yi Sun-sin. My first idea back in 1999 was in fact to write a biography of Yi. The project then expanded and I ended up writing a book about the whole war.
I wonder how many other great generals we have not heard about because they were sabotaged or eliminated by their own country. Another great general, Scipio Africanus, was poorly treated. He was considered by the military historian, B. H. Liddell-Hart, to be the best general that EVER lived. Better than Napoleon, Caesar, and Alexander the Great. Yet, he was so poorly treated, that he left Rome, and when he died he had his tomb read, something like "Rome, you shall not even possess my bones." FYI - he defeated the great Hannibal -- on a field chosen by Hannibal, and with fewer troops. He also NEVER lost a battle. Well, read the book.
Actually, he also reconquered the Spanish territories long held by the Barca family, forcing Hannibal's Brother to travel to Italy to rejoin him, and then forced the Carthaginians to recall Hannibal. Even the battlefield was not of Hannibal's choosing. It was forced upon him, Scipio maneuvred him there, in front of Carthage.
As usual, the petty politicians accused Scipio of embezzlement/overspending, or some such stupid thing. They would do this kind of thing again to Caesar, and same as Carthaginian politicians did to Hannibal. Most politicians only know how to scheme & backstab.

Well, Korean historians did all research to find his flaws since that sounds like an interesting study. You can find records about him from all Chinese, Korean, Japanese sides. But, so far, the only record that showed flawed side of Yi they could find is his own diary.
Yi share the same faith as late Ming general Yuan Chonghuan. Yuan defeated that Manchu twice but because of corrupt official false accusations he was put to death by a thousand cut.
If the Koreans sunk 2 fleets only when they have seen the Japanese fleet coming it is very logic to arrest and imprison the admiral Yi Sun-sin the only person that defeated the Japan fleet. As they lost almost all battles on the ground, probably they considered useful to lose as well the navy power. In fact the Chinese were the masters so Koreans were curious to see how the Chinese will do the war without the navy on the South of Korea.
They lost several battles early on because they were unprepared. A lot of the guerrillas did pretty well against small units and there were even government and monk troops that did pretty well later on.

Sam Hawley has been transparent and has explicitly stated his book was written from the perspective of the Koreans of the Joseon dynasty whilst being both historical accurate and also covering the myriad of salient variables of the conflict. I get the sense that you are apprised that there are many publications written from both the Chinese Ming and Hideyoshi's Japanese perspective. Have you actually read Sam Hawley's excellent book, LiRan? "The Imjin War" is immensely more detailed, immersive, and comprehensive than these videos LiRan!

If the Koreans sunk 2 fleets only when they have seen the Japanese fleet coming it is very logic to arrest and imprison the admiral Yi Sun-sin the only person that defeated the Japan fleet. As they lost almost all battles on the ground, probably they considered useful to lose as well the navy power. In fact the Chinese were the masters so Koreans were curious to see how the Chinese will do the war without the navy on the South of Korea.
They lost several battles early on because they were unprepared. A lot of the guerrillas did pretty well against small units and there were even government and monk troops that did pretty well later on.

Sam Hawley has been transparent and has explicitly stated his book was written from the perspective of the Koreans of the Joseon dynasty whilst being both historical accurate and also covering the myriad of salient variables of the conflict.
I get the sense that you are apprised that there are many publications written from both the Chinese Ming and Hideyoshi's Japanese perspective.
Have you actually read Sam Hawley's excellent book, LiRan? "The Imjin War" is immensely more detailed, immersive, and comprehensive than these videos LiRan!
@@odinsoneeye7501 no i have not read the book, have watched all the vedios, and my feeling is, Korea is not important in the imjin war, should be the Chinese and the Japanese that matters, my bias opinion, the Korean wars that fought through out history sadly are never about Koreans...
