Thanks David. Originally this was intended as a quick n dirty video for someone in a forum. Turned out to be my most watched video, I'll probably do an updated version some time with no shaking!
In the options.txt file there is a setting you can type in so that you can avoid the slow startup in Ableton due to having too many VSTs. The difference in Live starting up was night and day for me. -NoVstStartupScan Either way, thanks for the video, I found it useful =)
Thanks! I was aware of that (thanks to Sonic Bloom) but haven't tried it. Streamlined things a lot more recently and the startup time is now much faster. Thanks for watching!
@@RabidBatMusic You really ought to, there are some options in there, that I find invaluable and can't imagine using Ableton without it at this point. Random aside: Ableton is my Secondary DAW and while I enjoy using it to sketch my tracks out, I tend to bounce everything out to use in Studio One. Sometimes I also run Ableton in parallel with Studio One sending MTC info so -RewireMasterOff is essential =)
Man, rtpMIDI is the only thing that has EVER worked over wifi for me. I tried LK with UBRIDGE and all but it was unreliable. Can't even get ableton Link to work with Ableton as my desktop DAW (it works with Bitwig on the same machine, but not over the notwork). rtpMIDI just works. If you're having dramas, make sure rtpMIDI desktop app can get through the Windows firewall and that both your iPad/iPhone are on the same wifi/router.
Thanks for your video!! It does work though, however, sending midi from a keyboard through a DAW to an iPad and routing audio back into the PC comes with high latency. Too high to enjoy playing an instrument on the iPad. I would be interested to use Animoog on my iPad, I guess a wired connection should be better. Midimux seems dead, yet it's not free in the app store, is there no way to try if this works?
Great info and it does work; however, the latency using this set up makes it pretty unviable, at least for me. You mentioned setting this up with an adhoc network. How would that work, exactly? Thanks for posting this vid.
It works for me with thumbjam (although not always just sometimes) but unfortunately thatsbthe only app out of 4 ive tried that works and i think that could be due most apps midi options don't have a send and receive option . thumbjam is old but has midi send and receive aka in and out yet most newer apps only have vague simple midi options in settings.
Ha dude thank you so much this was just what i was looking for, BUT lol I am still having trouble, I am using FieldScaper app on my Ipad and i love this new app i found, But i just can not get the sound to come through to Ableton live 10 The only thing i did not follow was the setting the App as midi in and outputs, I just can not find it on that app, I followed everything else but the only thing i could not follow was the input and output of the App. Is there anything you can do to help, I have some fantastic sounds coming from FieldScape but can't get them over to record in Ableton Thanks Dude Steve
Hi Steve, thanks for watching. rtpMIDI only creates a MIDI connection between iPad and computer, no audio is transmitted or received. To get your Fieldscaper audio into Ableton, the easiest way would be to record it in the app and export the audio file from there. I use an app called Flick to quickly send files over WiFi or Bluetooth. If you want to grab the audio live, as you're using the app, you could take a line from the iPad headphone out into your audio interface and just record it into Ableton.
Hi Rabid. Nice tutorial! Do you know a way to connect via USB cable to minimize the latency? I know that it's natively possible with a Mac, but I'd need it for Windows. Any idea?
I don't see why not, except that loopMIDI doesn't do any routing (nor does rtpMIDI), it simply creates the Ports. You need to use a DAW to make the actual connections. But I can't really see a use case for it... what are you trying to do?
rtpMIDI doesn't seem my iPad. I did get it working before. Actually it was after an update ran on the iPad. Not working again now. Not sure what i can do to get rtpMIDI to see it again :-/
Ah those blessed updates! I've kept my pads on iOS9 and 10 where everything is working well, don't need any extra emojis! Depends on the app you are using. rtpMIDI won't see your iPad until an app is running with Network MIDI enabled. Some apps don't have it, so you may have to use something like MidiFlow or MidiFire to act as an intermediary.
@@RabidBatMusic My iPad did Eventually appear after I checked back an hour or so later! :-/ I connect but latency shows as '???'. Shortly after an error appears - 'connection failled (IP address) 5004 has not answered the connection request'. Not sure why it took so long to see it. I had launched Lemur, MIDI toolbox, Moog Animoog (I have the MIDI out IAP). Nothing seemed to work ...... then suddenly it appeared but didn't seem to quite connect properly.
Man, really Thank you, I have spent too long to find a solution for my Ipad with my PC Workstation.... ThumbJam was the key :)
Nice job man thanks. Besides a A little jerky of camera it was right to the point and had all the information needed. Thanks

This is awesome! Big ups
OMFG After endless hours of searching and app purchases, here is the answer!!!
Tell me about it...
Amazing video! Thank you so much for the help!

Not working for me. I have establish wireless connection via Itunes so it the computer see's my ipad but I may be missing something. Any help?
Latency problem... any fix please?

Hi Extrem, sorry I missed your comment here. Did you find a solution? If not the "musicIO" apps by "Power Trio" will allow you to do this, and more.
Decent tutorial! 👍 Nice channel, subscribing now! 👍
Thanks Alien! I plan to redo some of these tutorials in the future so they're a bit less rough around the edges! Much appreciated :)

hmmm just realized that you probably can't use loop midi as well as rtp for the same i/o device.

what ios app is that?
Thumbjam. It's a real classic and has some surprising capabilities.
