I’m a Z6 shooter and the autofocus is rock solid. I’m questioning your settings and “know how” on all these cameras frankly. If you’re not shooting with them for extended periods of time really learning the camera and how it does things (like AF) these reviews become less and less valuable. Maybe bring on some people who use each system exclusively and is more proficient about the ones you clearly don’t use all the time or at all.

    • @cooloox

The Nikon AF is not rock solid. It might be for "what you do", but you have to accept in a broader range of conditions it can have issues. The AF test in the above video had a model in extremely harsh and changing lighting (something I'm sure you would not generally be doing on a paid job) and she was walking in and out of harsh light and heavy patchy shadows. It was a real AF stress test. Most AF systems struggle in backlit and harsh lighting situations.
I have several cameras which give me virtually 100% hit rate, but I'm being selective in the conditions I shoot in. In the harsh conditions shown above, I know without bias my AF would fail at least some of the time.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 3 года назад +2

@@TaipeiGeek Err, lower hit rate doesn't mean it's worse? Lol. Nikon fanboys sure hate it when Nikons don't win.
Want to see in 60 seconds what was proven in this video? Set your Nikon AF up however you like and have a subject walk through alternating backlighting to harsh patchy lighting to deep shadows (lack of lighting). Your AF will have a much poorer hit rate then you're used to. This was a real AF stress test.
Fortunately, you won't normally be shooting in these conditions (if ever) and your hit rate will be far higher, generally. Keeping it real though, in every AF test I've watched online, the Nikon usually comes third.

Great test. If Nikon had a flippy screen, it could have won and became the go-to camera for all vloggers and youtubers. But everyone thinks it's the Canon or the Sony now. I did want to point out that just because a brand has new lenses, that doesn't mean the older lenses should be written off. I'm not familiar enough with Canon and Sony, so this may not apply. With Nikon, most of their lenses since the late 1950s work with their cameras since then. Maybe not all capabilities but usable. As an example, I've used the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.2 AI-S lenses on the Z7 without issue. The point being just because there is a new mount doesn't mean you have to replace your glass. What was a nice lens yesterday is still a nice lens. Also, many forget that lenses have character and it is not always about the specs. Again, thanks for sharing. The Sony A7C has a “box focus area” mode, too (albeit rather large - it’s called “Zone”). And that helps to restrict what the Eye AF locks on to.
The fact that the Nikon needs a restricted AF mode in order to work as well as the other systems in unrestricted mode, tells me that it is computationally the weakest of the bunch. So, it makes perfect sense for Nikon to put in 2 processors. And still there’s a performance difference.

Interesting video - a few issues that I see. 1) You need to consider many other things in comparing these systems. First and foremost - lenses. The Nikon Z lenses are superior in most respects to the other lenses for the other systems. Case in point - since you are comparing "lower end" systems lets look at the 50mm1.8 for example. The Z version is the winner hands down. It is optically superior in corner to corner sharpness and has almost no focus breathing. The Canon RF 50mm 1.8 is softer than the Nikon especially edge to edge and has significant focus breathing - making is a poor choice for video. To be fair, the Nikon lens is $300 more than the Canon version but then again the Z6 II is $500 less than the R6 so this is a moot point and I'd rather have great lenses. 2) Nikon's NEVER overheat in video - they may not put in gimmicky features - like beta versions of 8K that overheat etc., but whatever is in the camera works perfectly every time. 3) As far as AF tracking, I agree that Nikon is still in 3rd place to Sony and Canon respectively, but you must have been doing something wrong in your test because the Nikon is much better than the results you are getting. There is a small learning curve with Z system AF - so I am not surprised that you did not use it optimally not being well acquainted with the system. It is not quite as good as the Sony and Canon but it is very close - much closer than what your test showed - see Manny Ortiz's video comparing Eye AF of the Nikon, Canon and Sony and you will see that the difference is minimal - the Nikon actually does better in some of his tests than the Canon or Sony. Nikon's main failing in tracking AF at this point is distance to subject. The subject has to be closer on the Nikon before the system picks up the face/eye than on Canon and Sony but once this is taken care of the difference will be negligible and for portraiture the difference is already virtually irrelevant. It is clear that all three systems are very good - I just see a lot of people reviewing / comparing Nikons that don't really use them normally or don't really know how to use them optimally and thus give the public the wrong idea about their capabilities. As a final aside, it is pretty clear that the Sony is underexposing at any given ISO as compared to the Nikon and Canon - this is the reason why it is getting better results when 'overexposed' - not because it has better dynamic range - it is just less sensitive at any given ISO - this is why it looks the worst of the three (by a lot) when you underexpose. Thanks for the interesting video!

Well about those lenses this isn't quite true. Nikon's f4 zoom lenses are average at best and have a lot of software corrections going on. Sony-Zeiss f4 are tragic as well. However, Canon's f4 zooms are stellar. When we talk about f2.8 zooms most recent comparisons between Sigma 14-24 f2.8 for Sony and Nikon S 14-24 f2.8 showed that Sigma is actually sharper. So this whole argument where people are raving about Nikon lenses being superior is really a case by case discussion and definitely doesn't apply to all. People who claim some mythical superiority of Nikon glass have not used any of the other systems and their lenses.

Good review, but I think it's not accurate to say the R6 isn't good for video. That's like saying a car that only drives 300 miles on a tank is useless. People have different driving and video recording needs. I bet most people don't record for an hour straight and expect to keep going. 4k 60, and 10 bit 4k also put video from the other 2 cameras to shame.

Thanks for the video. The comparisons were interesting, though the conclusions at each stage and overall didn't appear totally correct to me. ISO test for example, i couldn't find any visible grain or noise in Z6II and R6 photos at the zoom level you guys had in video for upto 3200 - 6400. But then again, noise and grain being palatable is a subjective matter. Image quality and dynamic range - seemed much better in Z6II than in R6. Sure it was close but the balance of color science appeared much gorgeous in Z6II than in Canon, and this one again is a subjective matter when testing at such close levels. AF - Z6II has very very good AF, both the speed of it and also the keeper rate, but it needs to be tweaked a bit based don situations. Same with R6 and Sony too. I know everyone is saying its good just not as better as Canon or Sony yet, but am not sure what we quantify as good. Higher keeper rate at fast burst is not exactly an only AF test criteria. The quality of AF as inferred from the photos, also depends on the sharpness of the lens involved and fringe sharpness of the pixels in AF box. Don't understand the point of such a harsh AF test with default AF settings. I for one wouldn't use default tracking AF in such a hard backlit setting, makes no sense to do so directly. Many wedding photographers do impressive work with Z6II in harsh beautiful backlit situations and many have done the same on Z6 too. Good video nevertheless, though I wouldn't advise viewers to base their buying decision on the views expressed in this video.

To those sticking up for Nikon AF, this was a real AF stress test. A model walking through an ever changing (regarding lighting) scenario. She was in lighting that was backlit, harshly lit, had patchy lighting, was totally in shade etc. These are not normal lighting conditions. The test demonstrated how the cameras could deal with such harsh 'varying' conditions.
In a normal controlled lighting environment, all cameras will do very well. As illustrated all over RUclips in side-by-side comparisons, Nikon still trails the pack in terms of AF tracking and AF consistency. It's getting better and better though. No point in making excuses because Nikon didn't live up to the others.

It's all about the glass. BH lists 25 Nikon Z lenses with the cheapest fast lens (50mm f1.8) nearly $600. Canon, 22 lenses. At least the 50 f1.8 is reasonable. Sony EF mount, 151 lenses. Full support from multiple 3rd party vendors. Used market already established and decent used bodies for us poor folks. Just bought a lightly used A7ii, Tamron 35mm f2.8, Sony 50mm f1.8 (used) and a Sony 85mm f1.8 (used) for less than any of the bodies in this review. When I have the need or the $$ I'll upgrade the body to any 1 of 5+ amazing options - A7iii, A7C, A7Riv, A7Siii, A9ii plus other bodies in between.
I was honestly torn about the Canon RP because Canon has made it very easy to use EF glass but the RP just didn't perform in image quality, no IBIS and more expensive than an A7ii, especially used. It's more advance AF was hard to say no to though.

Hey guys I LOVE your reviews! Also seems you guys really enjoy what you do..and that makes a difference. In any case guess this review is a bit older now..but just wanted to suggest should you do another similar review?...you really ought to include or check out the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5! It's generally a tad under 2k with a fantastic 20-60 kit lens..not a constant F4 or anything but a great sharp lens 3.5-5.6. I know since this review, esp the Z6II have had some major firmware updates ESP for auto focus. I own the Z6II haha partially cause of a review you did with it's updated firmware..the eye auto red box thing on wide/face..and the image quality is SO good that any slight clunky-ness I find with the auto focus, is way forgiven once I see the files. That said, before I got the Pansonic S5 I had the Lumix DS1 for over a year. It was a great camera but for me WAY too large and heavy so sold it. Brings me back to the Pana S5..It's just a GREAT camera..IMO has the best ergonomics here well vs the Nikon and Sony..anyways. The files are also near incredible. I am not a video shooter very much..but every review I saw on the S5 as to video puts it near the top in this range. We know it's only contrast detect but with the latest firmware esp eye auto-focus I'd put it above my Nikon Z6II. The auto-focus on the S5 is actually VERY VERY good.. My only issue with the S5 is I shoot raw+jpeg. While jepg color is actually REALLY nice almost filmic...it always tends to have a tad too much magenta on Caucasian people's faces, pleasant but wish it was more neutral like Nikon files as to true color.. Funny..my wife is Asian and the S5 makes her skin color look just perfect. In any case as I say love your reviews..just thought I'd mention about the S5 to check out as it seems to always get lost behind, Nikon, Canon and Sony... and it's actually imo a hidden gem..esp price point vs the quality.

I looked at the S5 its seems a very good camera - but a few reviews mentioned it had not particularly good 1080p. I do still shoot in 1080p because of speed of turnaround on my work plus it 100 percent social media work. I asked on Panasonic forums if this was the case and everyone who commented confirmed this. I know that the R6 is the reverse and has very good 1080p.
So its the R6 for me - why not the Z6 II as a Nikon shooter well.......

Flippy sceeen only has an advantage in portrait orientation. For me the few times I’m in a situation where I need to tilt the screen completely up or down in portrait isn’t worth the inconvenience of having to flip out the screen and rotate it around each time I want to tilt in landscape orientation which happens far more frequently. It’s slow. And I never need a screen facing me. Plus flippy screens don’t jive well with L brackets.

Most manufacturers are making cameras and lenses for mirrorless. Very few are working on DSLR cameras. So buying into the DSLR system will make it so you will not have new cameras you can move up to with your lenses. My recommendation is to get into mirrorless and buy good lenses. I don’t know why people care so much about the flip screen. My R5 with a lens weighs over 2kg/4.4lb! Ain’t nobody is gonna hold that with one hand and vlog at the same time. Besides, these are not video cameras they weren’t made to record video. They can do it as back up or a gimmick, but not for real work. However tilting is the way to go. Waist level shot, overhead shot, tilting is better than flip because the screen isn’t off-axis.

There is something terribly wrong with that lens on the Sony, is that a 7artisans 50/1.8?
I don't recall you once mentioning the lack of detail or smeariness which probably made the Sony look worse than it is here. Soft lenses also tend to make High ISO images appear worse since the lack of any real detail (since the lens resolves poorly) makes the noise even more prominent.

The Sony has better highlight advantage but has a focus issues. It may be the lens used but you can see at 6:41 her foreheads, lips and eyeballs are tact sharp in both Canon and Nikon but has a smudge in the Sony. At 8:27 her eyeballs, cheek and lips tell the same story. Her face is out focused in Sony. Sony has also disadvantage in Color if you see the color arrows green, yellow, red and blue are very tidy in both the Canon and Nikon while the Sony has a dull look. At 8:56 the lamp and shadows tell the same story. The a7 series were undoubtedly sharper and has punch a lot of stars in its name but this a7c is something I want to avoid though it may be tempting because of the size. The price of this Sony as listed is not even in a entry affordable level though mostly they used to review together with the Z5 which is way cheaper. But it is a heck of energy to bring out this level of review that also make my decision more solid. Thanks for the review. This review is enjoyable to watch from HD onwards till 4k.

Also the image quality test is good that you do with a model portrait but id like to see a heavy 500% punch in to make it obvious and also i have noticed on one test you did it seemed like you put up an misfocus image of an eos r vs the r5 and r6 id like to see them all surely focused on the eye for the comp.

A bit of improvement would be a deeper grip, an extra dial on the grip, and adding active stabilization found on a7siii and zv1. The weight is perfect, the quality, low light performance are astounding. Even the evf is good, and better placed than in the center. The flip screen is very good and useful. Maybe they could add another sd card. If i had to choose only one improvement, it would be the active stabilization for walking videos. Static image and videos, ibis is good. The good thing is gyro data helps to stabilize your footages very well when it is needed. I am still cuurently in the process to learn and cannot test it very well as it is too cold in canada right know. Below the recommended operation temperatures.

So the Nikon 6ii is exactly the same sensor as the first z6 ? For some reason I thought I heard it was different and a stacked sensor?
I saw someone’s photos with the original z6 and I want that color palette so a 6ii would be worth it but if it’s different then I’d go with the original tbh .
The z7 is more Sony ish and not as warm as the z6’s. And don’t can be nice with the sonys tend to have this blue yellow tint that is too much.
The canon colors are bland in comparison bc they aren’t very moody but rather “safe, and even if people try to match em, the difference is always there but the difference becomes more not I able too when you compose the photos t the colors the camera favors .
I really love the Nikon , it has a sophisticated deep ness to the colors that really do well with editing as far as Iv seen .
I just need to figure out about the 6 vs6ii sensors .

Out of all the cameras, the least impressive raw files to my eye are the Canons. Ive played with both the R5 and R6 raw image files, and their shadow recovery in post is noticeably noisier than comparable sonys or nikons.....There is a reason that phase one uses sony sensors. Best sensors in the world imo, canon can't touch them in the sensor arena.
Besides that, for the higher megapixel photography sensors you see on the R5, A7RIV, Z7ii, I believe these cameras are already hitting the limit of what full frame sensors are capable of........The bottleneck is simply the size of the full frame sensor; theoretically you can keep cramming in megapixels into these sensors but its counterproductive and will introduce more noise.

Are you overlooking the role of the rest of the camera maybe? And of post processing? Where, in the camera analog-to-digital conversion is done? How the voltage regulation is constant from the first photosite to the last (the sensor as array or grid of photosites is scanned and there is time parallax).
With my Z 7, I saw what I call "random color noise" in certain types of areas in the photos. In Lightroom 13. But Nikon Capture NX-D did not show it. Nor did DxO PhotoLab 4 (and it has incredible noise suppression AI). Capture One 20 did not show it either. And with old F-mount lenses, Lightroom did not show the effect too. When you shoot raw, and compare cameras in post processing, then you are comparing post processing and for the most part what the software developers (programmers, not photographers) have made of it. The software has turned 14-bit monochrome photosite readings (arranged in R-G-G-B teams, so 14R-14G-14G-14B) from the raw file into RGB-RGB-RGB-RGB and here you lose quality, even when you now have 26.5RGB-26.5RGB-26.5RGB-26.5RGB because the jump from 14 b its monochrome to 26.5 RGB for the best cameras and raw processing has invented all those colors at the expense o loss of bit depth in the monochrome original. When DxO write about a PhaseOne sensor that is has 26.5 bits color space, what they mean is that 26.5 is the most they can make of it with their software. So my random color noise has nothing to do with lack of photons or quantum physics for that matter. It is purely bad demosaicking following bad deBayerization in the raw/post processing.
Note about Sony that their sensors are made in their semiconductor operating company and that the operating company making Sony cameras is a client there like Nikon is or PhaseOne or Hasselblad. The current generation of Sony sensors have analog to digital conversion baked onto the sensor chip and this cannot go beyond 14 photographic bits. Hence Hasselblad still have a discrete AD circuit like other cameras had in the past or else they never could do 16 bits. Note that the Hasselblad 16 bit raw files do not result in a larger color space, though.
"Sensor" is a smokescreen. It is misused as cover up for many things. It is also misused by marketers. For instance when the Sony Semiconductor brochure mentions sixteen bits with their sensor's AD conversion and a small footnote then says only 14 are meaningful for your photos.
What is more important than the sensor even is the specification of the wavelength cutoff of the R, G and B filters over the photosites. TO what extent they overlap frequency coverage and how fast they cut off from their cut off frequency. Then most cameras have a so-called "glass AA"filter - I call it the fuzzy filter - that does a bit of hardware anti-alisasing to help color raw processing (deBayerization) later on and potentially ease sharpening (anti aliasing) - but the glass AA layer introduces optical problems. For the lenses and for sharpness.
Leica have a glass AA layer that is like a Fresnel lens where the rings also have been cut into pieces and in that way you get a changing angle of the glass AA lenses or fibers across the diameter of the sensor from the optical axis in the middle. That's not "the sensor" either in that it presents a solution to their old lens designs but also is a compromise average between the different back-end projection of their excellent but old glass.
      Sensor? What The Fotography

    • @waawaaweewaa2045

@@jpdj2715 I'm sure there are plenty of factors that can improve image quality besides the sensor; smartphones have proven the power of software for cleaning up images in camera and improving the control of dynamic range...As far as sensors go, more megapixels reduce the ability of the sensor to take in light, and high mp cameras like the sony a7riv are quite noisy in certain situations because of that. So as far as hardware is concerned, the solution is to use a larger sensor if you want more megapixels without the tradeoff of reduced light.
Also when you were talking about leicas glass AA layer, are you talking about low pass filters? I know that the Z7 doesn't have an AA filter which is nice.
I'd also be interested in seeing a lightroom raw file comparison to nikons proprietary software. It doesn't surprise me to hear that lightroom introduces its own noise.

      @jpdj2715 3 года назад +1

@@waawaaweewaa2045 - my experience with large format is that it is large in the first place. 8"x10" - you don't want to walk around with a Sinar P at that size. It's not about sharpness but more about gradation and saturation in the case of film. Resolution per mm decreases with larger size formats (but resolution per degree of image angle slightly increases). Problems get bigger. Depth of Field becomes less and at 8"x10" a portrait lens may be 500mm. So you shoot with f/90 or f/256 and need incredible amounts of flash power for that. A Hasselblad 500 series was an optimum for me. Its Zeiss lenses had something special. But, big and heavy in every way.
In digital for most photographers I feel that 24 MP full frame is the sweet spot. Beyond 100% has become a matter of software and AI to do the upscaling (and upsampling at that).
More megapixels reduce the light captivating ability of individual photosites, yes, but you'll see this mainly translated into high ISO, not in dynamic range nor in color space.
Noise in shots from hi-res cameras must be attributed to raw processing in the first place. At lower level details, the algorithms seem to work badly in the deBayerization/demosaicking processing steps. As long as software developers cannot explain to me it is not their fault, they are culprit for me. Yes, I know in proper legal systems of proper nation states nobody has to prove their innocence (except for taxes, and, and, and).
This is not to say cameras cannot be noisy. Recent Sony sensors have been designed to work with different amplification levels from the camera's mainboard, chipset and firmware. So there is a switch-over point where the jump is made to higher amplification and this may explain why my Z 7 was more noisy at 400 ISO than at 800 ISO (it switched just above ISO 400). I still have to test that with the Z 7ii.
With the Leica glass layer, I am not talking about low pass. It may double for that function, though, and I don't know. No, sensors cannot handle wide angle backends from lenses. They want perpendicular "rays" (or parallel waves) for best results. But older wider angles than portrait often are double Gaussians and have a very wide angle at the back. With SLR lenses this does not work and retrofocus principles are applied. To solve this problem, initially a Leica digital only offered APS-C crop sensors. When they developed the (they hate it when I compare it with Fresnel) glass fiber optic layer that guides light to the photosites in different angles of incidence they were able to offer full frame. But it does not scale up easily and hence the higher resolution camera is fixed focal lens.
A glass AA layer is just a dispersion layer that brings some of the light intended for photosite {X, Y} to (X-1,Y}, (X-1,Y-1}, (X-1,Y+1}, (X+1,Y}, (X+1,Y-1}, etc., so all surrounding photosites are injected with a bit of light from what was only projected at {X,Y} by the lens. This is just to make deBayerization and AA easier in post. (For AA and sharpening, it helps to understand True Type fonts or ClearType in MS environment, and next become aware that fonts have mathematical functions for their outlines, but raw photos need to have such contour lines discovered and handled for a specific resolution.)
Nikon Capture NX-D is a free download. Just download, install and find raw shots on the web.
Note that DxO is a software house selling raw processing software competing with Lightroom and Capture One. Their DxO mark is not to be nice but they develop profiles of lenses, cameras and firmware versions. Their marks are the result of their best guesses at what the profiles should be.
I had the Z 7 and was not aware it had no AA filter, but I have a Z 7ii now and this one certainly does not have an AA filter. I expect this to get at least the improvement we saw from the D800 to the D800E (see DxO).
Lightroom's introduction of noise is IMO just a matter of insufficient testing and not having reference images that are able to tell the programmers where the issues are. What is often called noise, are IMO Moiré patterns that have not been recognized as such. When users start to understand how cameras and raw processing work, they will stop blabbering about photons and noise. That would be important as it turns the tide on the developers who need to step up, instead of having excuses for bad programming.
Larger format - I still remember the first 8"x10" Kodak Ektachrome Professional on the Macbeth light tray (with daylight white balanced light in it) - looking through an 8x magnifying loupe, I was flabbergasted about the thick colors. At 2,880 DPI, my 8 or 9 nuances printer is not going to get near that. No matter how good my file is.
