Cant wait to watch. Ordered mine beginning of March and got build notice a couple weeks ago. Been searching RUclips for El Patron videos weekly and so happy to see a video from you!
I'm looking forward to doing some cooks. I'll be doing a couple reverse-seared ribeyes tonight for dinner. First cooking video will be a low and slow cook though.
Heck yeah Greg.. Ive seen that cooker in action and ive got to agree with everything you've said. It can do it all... Nice job buddy. Lone Star does it again. IMHO!
Hey Greg! Big fan of what you do! You’re my go to for burgers and bbq! Thanks for all the work you’ve put in to give us quality information and damn good looking food! Have a good one sir!
Great video. I have often thought a vertical design could be the most versatile if done correctly. I have had a design in my head similar to this for years. Being in the middle east without my tools and a shop prevented me from making one. This one looks like it tiks all the boxes. I think there needs to be a little more distance between the grill height and fire to do a low and slow smoke. I wonder if you can keep the temps in the low 200 range. Also, it should have an ash pan. Looks like cleaning will be a pain. Maybe, the door should be wider or on the side. Other than that, its the best looking one I have seen. Cant wait to see you run it through it's paces and see what it can do. This can even act like a Santa Maria grill. Nice job by Lone Star from a town where I used to live.
Congrats on another great cooker, this grills solves the problem of which one am I going to use. I have a SS Hasty Bake, I love the reverse Santa Maria style cooking. This cooker would be great for Tri Tip.
Hey Greg, I know you don't do a lot of shorts but can you please do a sexy short reel which showcases all the features of the El Patron so everyone can get excited about it?
I’m excited to see some cooks on this. I have a BGE but like you said, smoking with wood is just night right and there are some big disadvantages to them compared to your more TX style grills. I have an idea for a split trolley direct heat smoker meets Santa Maria meats offset pizza oven. But I haven’t welded in years!
This cooker looks very interesting. How would you rate this for weeknight cooking, where you want to fire it up quickly to cook some steaks and such? Longer term cooks like briskets seem natural, but it would be good to know how it would work firing it up and wanting to cook something in 30 minutes...
DONE!!!!! I have been following you since you introduced me to Korzp's SLAV....This is my next purchase I was looking at a Yoder Comp.....El Patron is in my near future Thank you!
If I had the $$$ and didn't already have a Hasty Bake Legacy, THIS would be the one to get!!! Hoping you can do a cook on this with wood splits - maybe some ribs or chicken?
I saw that you have 8 inch casters on your El Patron and I'm considering buying one with the same set up. The door looks really high when you open it. How tall are you and do you have problems with the height?
Best Father's Day present was seeing you got an El Patron 😊. Mine was delivered 3 weeks ago (Ordered Jan 8, 2024). I've got a seasoning and 2 cooks under my belt. Looking forward to upcoming El Patron videos from your channel. My only issue is the adjustable grate does not raise as high as 5" from the cooking grate due to the cable loop and the quick link attachment.
@@BallisticBBQ Yeah I looked at smaller quick links and that doesn't seem to solve the issue. Maybe a small chain link, then you loose the ability quickly detach. Maybe Chris will see this and come up with a solution. Mine tops out at 8.5 inches.
@@BallisticBBQI’ve had my el patron since mid May and upgraded the cable system. I used stainless cable and eliminated the factory cable loop by looping the new cable directly to the quick link attachment. It gained me another 1-1/2” closer to the cooking grates. Not sure if it makes that much of a difference but it can be done.
That's a great question, but a difficult one to answer. I love the Argentine grill, simply because it is so primal and so immersive. I love this cooker because it pretty much does everything... If I got rid of all of my other cookers, I'd still be able to grill like a Santa Maria, go low n slow like my offset, cook Kamado style and rotisserie cook. I'm still getting to know this cooker however, so I'm not ready to sell off my other cookers!
@@BallisticBBQ Thanks Greg I’m looking into getting me an Argentine grill. I have an offset, pellet grill and Weber kettle so I think I’ll be set with an Argentine style. Also if I’m feeling lazy I could always pour a chimney of lump in the Argentine and grill something quick. I noticed you using a sunterra without the brasero. I appreciate your help and till this day I still whip up that cornbread recipe in the Holidays. Thanks brother
@@wolverinegnr That cornbread video is an oldie! I may have to update that one of these days. As you said, you don't always have to load up the brasero.
Jack of all trades is a master of none. It's a universal rule of design: compared to a design that does a single thing and does it well, a multifunctional system must have design compromises to achieve acceptable results for all requirements. Example: It's hard to beat a Weber kettle for grilling and smoking, and it's so simple!
That’s true but some folks don’t need to be the best. They want to experiment with various cooking styles and don’t have the money or the space to buy a smoker, grill, pizza oven, etc. I wouldn’t buy this thing but I can see why some folks would.
I have an uni pizza oven, and have used it many times, and what I've learned is that it performs terribly compared to a large brick oven. But your average home oven can make a pretty good pizza but it's MUCH more practical. A Weber kettle grill is $90. I'm not sure what you mean about "some people don't have the money". This El Patron is $2,000. So you can buy a grill, smoker, and a pizza oven for less than this thing!
It's OK to just say you're broke. If you had the money, you would. It's OK. I have used a weber and I have upgraded to bet grill systems, they're not the same. @@Gruuvin1
Will be curious to know how a brisket turns out on this vs an offset. I know Chris did a brisket on the rotisserie, but anxious to hear about a non-rotisserie brisket from a 3rd party. How would you expect the brisket on this to turn out vs traditional offset?
I just did my first longer cook the other day (video Sunday). This was only my third cook, so it was more of an experiment/learning opportunity for me. I'm very confident that I will be able to cook a good brisket now. It held very stable temps throughout the entire cook.
Do wireless thermometers like the meater work with thhis Grill? I'd think it would be a Faraday's cage and not let any signal trough which could be annoying.
They do work in this (and all of my other pits) including my larger smoker made from 1/4" steel. A Faraday cage requires continuous conductivity and the door being painted and sealed where contact is made with the rest of the cooking chamber breaks the conductivity.
Nice grill, but I think I'll stick with my gravity fed grill - about the only thing I can't do is use splits in it, but I can use wood. Also, it has to have electricity for the fan, but I've got my drum smoker and offset smoker/grill for those emergencies. I might have purchased this had I seen it before I saw the gravity grills though, as you can add the fan and other electronics to it still.
Well, I love the good old Weber Kettle, but really apples to oranges here. It can do a lot, but as soon as you set it up for low n slow, you lose half of your cooking surface. Instead of being able to raise and lower the charcoal grate, you need to set up two zones, again losing half of your cooking surface. This being said, I truly love kettle grills, and for those on a budget, they are hard to beat.
The Hasty Bake was near the top of my short list for new cookers along with the El Patron. However, the El Patron won me over with how versatile it is. It arrives at the end of this week after 4 long months of waiting.
You open the door and scoop it out with a dust pan or a shop vac. This was brand-spanking new when I shot this. But seeing that you add the fuel via the large door on the front, I guess I assumed it was obvious. I've cleaned it twice since I shot this video, and it was very simple.
@@chriss8354 not difficult, my point in the discussion for a BBQ/Smoker at that expense, a simple method of removing ash should have been in the design, not get on your hand and knees and start shoveling…..IMO far from the “perfect” cooker due to this issue

Great comment. Cleaning this cooker is exactly like cleaning a Santa Maria grill. On this cook, I was using a water pan, so the drippings splashed into the pan. If not using a pan, the drippings would have dropped onto the charcoal grate, which was being used as a defuser. the drippings would have cooked on the defuser, and a wire brush our scraper would clean it off with no problem. If I was truly cooking over direct heat with the charcoal/wood on the fire brick at the bottom of the pit, the drippings would vaporize, seasoning the meat, just like a Santa Maria. As far as cleaning the ash, you open the firebox door and one of those large shop sized dust pans fit inside easily. Just brush the ash into the pan and dump, or use a shop vac. It's not difficult. The Huntsman looks pretty cool and seems like a good price. Not sure it's an apples to apples comparison, however. Thanks, Joe!
