  • Hello! I’m John Russell. Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions. In a recent lesson, we learned about the questions ‘How are you?’ and ‘How are you doing?’ In today’s lesson, we will learn about how to respond to these questions. Here are perhaps the most common ways.
    I am well
    Or
    I am doing well.
Let’s pay careful attention to the last word in both statements: well.
Well involves two consonant sounds and one vowel sound. Let’s start with the end: l.
It can be a difficult sound to produce. You start by putting your tongue between your teeth, like this:
    /l/
Then we have the vowel sound /ɛ/. Your lips should be somewhat relaxed.
    /ɛ/
Let’s combine the /ɛ/ and /l/ sounds. Repeat after me:
    /ɛl/
    /ɛl/
Now let’s add our first consonant sound: w
We need rounded lips to produce this sound.
    /w/
    /w/
Let's put all of our sounds together:
    well
    well
The reason we pay special attention to "well" is because Americans often reduce or shorten other words . That's why you might hear people say
    I'm well
    I'm doin' well.
That's all for today! Keep up the good work!
