Metal grooming tools are most preferred for long-haired pets because metal combs and brushes can more effectively penetrate thick, long fur, helping to remove tangles, mats, and loose hair. Metal slicker brushes and undercoat rakes are particularly beneficial for managing and maintaining the coat of longer haired animals, ensuring it stays healthy and mat-free.
But when using metal tools, it's important to choose ones with rounded tips to avoid scratching the skin. Also, gentle handling is crucial to prevent pulling the hair and causing discomfort.
Plastic brushes can be suitable for short-haired pets because they are often softer and less likely to irritate the skin. Rubber grooming mitts or brushes can effectively remove loose hair and stimulate the skin, promoting a healthy coat without the risk of scratching or discomfort.
Metal bristle brushes with very short, smooth bristles can also be used for short-haired pets for a more thorough cleaning.

Maybe first try to build a bond with your guinea pig, start by gently using your hands to simulate brushing motions, followed by a soft brush for a more thorough grooming. If necessary, you can then use a metal brush, but always be gentle and avoid forcing the grooming process.
