Todd Rodgers - Great review. You have given me some great ideas for maintenance. Brought her home yesterday, put her together, threw 3 ribeys on and PERFECT. I am a smoker so cant wait to try out how she maintains the heat. Will be getting the seals like you have. Again, great review.
+Todd Rodgers sealing this smoker/grill is a must. Remember, it's only stamped sheet metal, not 1/4" american steel so everything you can do to keep that heat in will help a great deal. Good luck! Thanks for watching !
That's friggin genius in putting Sheet Metal on the Grate for the Smoker. A friend I help move gave me her Smoke Hollow (model 6800). I was using the Smoker and wanted to put some stuff on the Grate, but noticed I was losing the Smoke and some Temperature. Have to use your idea. Thanks!
Putting Mine Together today. Bought a large can of pam to spray down the grill, and I'm spraying everything as it go's together. They now come with a condiment rack and a few other pieces of metal to beef it up. I also got the heat box seal and silicone. Thanks for the brick ideal and other mods you made. this was a sam's club purchase for $159 and got grill cover to go with it.. Happy BBQing Yal...
Thanks for this great review! I had settled on a $199 (sale price) Kenmore gas grill from Sears, but I saw this Smoke Hollow model last weekend at Sam's Club for $349. After watching your review, I've decided to pick up the Smoke Hollow. Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to watching your other videos to see this grill in action.
Great review... I have got one that I have had for almost 5 years bought it from Sam's club for 349.00.. I love it Have had a few problems with rust on the smoker lid but like you said a little sand paper and some stove paint and it looks good as new once again.
I bought mine in Nov. of 2010, and I assembled it got the cover for it. I cooked my ass off on that thang, It was a excellent grill and it was a monster for my cookouts, allthough I lost mine in my divorce last January, I plan on getting another one, SOON!
I've the same grill for 3+ years with some additional mods. I live near the great lakes, mine has more rust. I've replaced the grill tents twice and burner tubes. Also replacing the I'm replacing the sear burner with a normal side burner. My cover is shot need a new one also.
Drunken Sailor Brew & BBQ Actually the back of the gas grill is now completely rusted out and I had to fabricate a new back, and new shelves for the burners and the grill tents. I'll give it another winter (it's been covered and was treated several times...) definitely looking into another manufacturer. I've fed about 600+ people with it. It it had better thicker metal, better seals, and better thermometers,,,, this would be a good grill/smoker.
Thanks for the review. I've been looking at this grill for some time now and am going to pick one up next weekend after we get moved into our new house. Looking forward to smoking our first (with the new grill) pork loin roast and chops. I like to get a whole loin and cut the ends off for roasts and slice the middle section into 1 to 3 inch chops, slow smoked...don't get much better than that!!!
Great review, I appreciate your knowledge and time posting this. The tips are great to and I will employ. I agree on the sear burner but I just place a butane stove on top of it for my burner option.
Thanks for the review. I just bought mine last 4th of july weekend and yes tax free. I wanted to use it for the for the 4th but it took me 2 hours and I wanted to season it and also do the same mods you did before using it. I also ordered a cover to hopefully it'll last long. Great review!
Great review! I finally got mine assembled. It's the newer version. Yessir. Over $350 is way too much. The metal is a bit thin. There were quite a few bends and dents in mine needing to be sorted out. That and just from setting in the garage in the boxes until I had the time to get to it, it started rusting. Smh. But it's cleaned up and ready to go for its first grill.
I got the newer model in August of 2014 that has heat shields built onto the smoker box lid. None of my lids have seals and I need to get some. I don't have an actual cover for my smoker but it does sit underneath the front porch's cover all the time but it does get some moisture on it from heavy rain but I haven't had a rust problem yet with any of the metal surfaces.
Saw your review and loved this, I then saw this was in the camping section of my Gander Mountain. I debated getting the smaller model but the wife insisted to go with this bigger one so...paid $370 for it w/my associate discount( I work one day a week for discounts like this :) ) So far I LOVE it. Living in S Fla, I plan on using the charcoal side everyday.
@@DrunkenSailorBrewBBQ Thank you! I'm considering some custom work on this to open the 2 chambers up for when I want to smoke a lot of meat. It will need some type of sliding door that I can access....any ideas would be awesome!
I just bought mine and got it all put together Tuesday night and grilled some Chops. Very happy so far, hope it looks as good as yours in a couple of years. Thanks for the review. I will be checking out your other videos. I do have a question on the "seals" you have on yours. Where did you get them and how do you fix them to the frame? Also, why the Bricks in the Smoker, My rack has legs on it to hold it up off the bottom? Thanks again.
+Alan Thrasher if you just bought yours then you have a newer model than this one here. They made some modifications that would account for some differences. The bricks are there to raise the wood rack a bit for more air flow. The gaskets are high temp "Green Egg" gaskets. There should be a link in my first review of this smoker. They're self adhesive. Thanks for watching !
Thank you for taking the time to do the review. Great job! I really would like to see you demonstrate the use of this grill. For example, I want to know the best smoking technique. For example, a video on how to use this grill to smoke filet mignon. Can you do such a demo video?
Great video and reviews! Just purchased this at Sam's Club today. The model I have is the Pro Series. It was the floor model with two pieces missing, the thermometer and handle to the vent slider. Originally sells for $359.00, bought it for $239.99. Part replacements cost me $15.00. I am a caterer and looked at this unit, read reviews. I am excited to use this. Most of my catering consist of Wedding BBQ Receptions. Can you tell me what was the sealant/gasket you used for this? I will probably add a new coat of high temp flat paint before use. I like the idea of using the bricks in the smoker and the basket. I probably will change the wheels to something more heavy duty because of the terrain it could travel over.
Nice video. Will take your advice and clean out my grill tomorrow. Although my grill is dirty, I haven't had any rust. I found an 84" grill cover off Amazon for $20 and it works perfect as I don't have a garage and leave it outside. To hold my gas can, I use the lower level of my wife's stair step "thingy." The problems I've had with my grill is that the right gas burner has to be ignited with my lighter to get it to start. It was like that out of the box and I kinda dropped the ball in calling customer service. Also, the charcoal side of my grill burns fuel REALLY fast. I wish it had a drop tray like the Hybrid to easily add charcoal. Also, I haven't had much luck using the smoke box. I can never get it to maintain 215-230 degrees.
Great Review. Looking to buy this, like you at Sams Club. current price for new model is 369 and really thinking of pulling the trigger. You said you don't use the sear burner.. is that just a preference. when you have used it, does it do the job. heard it does, but want you opinion. Again, great review and loved your video! Thanks
I found that I just don't use the sear burner that often. Only because it's just worked out that way. when I do use it, it works great. Lots of BTU's. Thanks for watching!
+MrPechele i'll just hit it with the hose after getting it good and hot. I just make sure to do it on a sunny day so that it will dry quickly so it doesn't rust.
Question for you.. I have the same product but a couple years newer than yours. What does your temperature gauge read at when nothing it cooking?? Mine are reading at 150 or so.
the stock temp gauges bottomed out at ~90deg. Sounds like your temp gauge is shot. when it comes to store bought grills or cookers, one should always purchase a separate thermometer to use for accuracy. The Smoke Hollow is no exception. Always a worthwhile investment to ensure a good BBQ outcome. Thanks for watching !
I'm sure that wouldn't hurt. You'll probably need 2-3 cans to coat the entire top portion of the grill. I do believe though, that the best protection for this grill is a good cover. Thanks for watching!
I've been looking for a multi function grill. Been looking at this one but was wondering if you would go buy it now after having it? If not this one, what other multi function grill would you suggest?
bigredman5223 I would buy it again, yes...... but only for the right price. Keeping care of this grill you can expect to get 3-4 years out of it. So DO NOT pay too much!.... It wouldn't be fair for me to suggest another multi-function grill as I don't have experience with any others. Thanks for watching!
maybe I missed you saying it but did you mention how often you use this grill and how often you clean it? I'm in the market for a new one right now and I'm considering one of these. I'm a cheap ass usually but if it'll last me a few years I'll go for quality. also: are both of your thermometers still working? it looks offset from zero.
It's used at least once or twice a week. more in the better weather. I always keep it "clean" with brushing & not letting gunk build up, but really empty it all out with a hose down & scrubbing a few times a year. thermometers have been replaced, but you should never trust grill thermometers; always use a separate thermometer to measure your food temp when cooking. Thanks for watching !
Drunken Sailor Brew & BBQ I agree, but some brands have reliable thermometers others tend to go out quickly. well it's in good shape sir, thanks for the reply I was just looking at this model yesterday and almost pulled the trigger just looking at it. looks reliable!
One more question. Since buying the grill I have had problems getting the smoke box hot enough to bring the charcoal side up to 230-250. As I'm typing this, I have about 3 pounds of charcoal along with 3 hickory smoke logs in the box. They've been lit for about 30 minutes but only bringing the temp to about 150 degrees. Please advise.
seal that smoke box up as best as you can. Also, I highly recommend installing some sheet metal in place of the grate (8:20 in the video). This will really help in getting more heat retention. efficiency is not this grill's forte. Hope that helps. Good luck!
Ok. Haven't got around to having some sheet metal so I took heavy duty aluminum foil and wrapped it around the grate... I sealed the covers with the BJE gasket as well. It took a while, but I just got it to 250. But not before I charred my ribs. Temp spiked to 350.
Will McCoy heavy duty aluminum foil is a great idea. good to see it helped a bit. as with any setup, trial & error is part of figuring out the quirks of your gear. not sure what you're using, but another cheap addition is a $5 oven thermometer. I've never seen a grill lid thermometer worth anything, this grill included.
I can't see why not. I'd prefer a side burner just because I feel you'd have more temperature control. But the sear burner works awesome (and adds to the "wow factor")...
Cool thanks...just picked this up at Gander Mountain for $349. Took me about 2 1/2 hours to build, but the directions were pretty precise. We'll see how it works in the next couple of days.
phantom357 that's great! $349 is about the right price. You'd probably see that drop by $50 come september or october. you're right about the assembly & directions, time consuming but pretty simple. Thanks for watching!
I just bought this grill yesterday, newest model (with tank under gas grill side and shelves). Sam's club $292 total in CT, not a Sam's club member so I had to pay the 10% buyers premium, then tax. Called at 11:30am on Saturday, they said they had 4 of them, got there at 1:30/2, there were only 2 left. Saw prices much higher on line and even at Home Depot. So I was pleased with the price. Not too bad I guess. Watched just about every video possible on this grill (including all of yours) for months before purchase. Found the cover on line for $66 with free shipping. Assembly time - like 4.5 hrs with a kids soccer game in the middle. Doing all your mods this week. Can't wait to get started. Total amateur here. Any recommendations for a Saturday smoke? Something to start in the am and eat at like 4/5pm. Just looking for ideas. Thanks.
Ribs are always a good thing to start with. not too hard and will only take a couple hours. It'll be a good idea to build a fire in the smoke box (& charcoal side too, for that matter) and let it burn for a few hours the day before to "season" it. Thanks for watching. Good luck. Let me know how the maiden voyage turns out!
Jeffrey Dietschler no. just smoke the ribs indirectly from the firebox. I recommend building a fire in the charcoal side too just during seasoning to get rid of any "manufacture"-like smells and/or tastes.
The only concern I have with this grill is Cooking Space. I am looking for a quality combo grill that I can cook 2 beer can chickens on at the same time on charcoal or 2 full racks of pork spareribs.. I am very interesed in buying this grill I just have to be sure it can handle a large amount of food if needed.. Aside from that it looks like with the mods a great cooking machine!
I've cooked 2 chickens using my "bean can chicken" recipe. and they fit fine. However, I did take the grates off & set the birds up on the charcoal tray as they would not fir under the lid. They were cooked indirectly from the firebox. 2 full racks of ribs (laying down flat) will fill up the charcoal side of the grill. Thanks for watching!
no. unfortunately, the Smoke Hollow had to go after ~5 years of fun. the thin chinese metal could not handle the test of time. you can see the new smoker here: ruclips.net/video/qqy0jblf3Jk/видео.html
Richard Murphy I figured no one ever does a review of a product after its been used. They're always brand new. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching !
If you season your grill/smoker by coating everything in cooking oil and burning it on you won't have rust issues. It's people that don't do this that will..
The sear burner cooking area is 16"x11". The gas & charcoal cooking areas are 16"x22", and the cooking grate for the smoker box is 12"x14". Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Okay, so you say it's a good product. But for those of us who HAVEN'T graduated from the MacGyver school of fixing something that should be already functional when I pay for it???
I think what you're trying to ask is why should one have to do all the mods to this grill that I've done; that it should be ready like this out of the box? If that's the case it's simply a question of $$. One can always save money by utilizing a bit of elbow grease & some basic ingenuity. If you want a grill that was made of thicker steel and had all the mods that I've installed here, then you'll pay for it. Probably a lot more. One can drop a LOT of $$ on a grill/smoker. Which is why I really wanted to make it clear that while I do enjoy the grill, I believe it is generally overpriced. So shop around. If you can get it for a decent price (which I did @ $270), then I believe it's worth the purchase. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
i stand corrected. you are right that one is 369 the one that looks just like it but does not have the smoker on the Right is 199 www.samsclub.com/sams/hybrid-grill-2016/prod19020312.ip?xid=plp1872-outd:product:1:26
Michael Carla Central Fl meaning where? Near one of the coasts (Melbourne or Clearwater/Largo/St.Pete) or in the middle, Lakeland or Orlando. I like the design and functions, but the metal & paint quality will very probably send me elsewhere.
Richard Murphy the thin chinese metal is the main reason I feel its imperative to seal it up with the JB Weld , season it, give it a good coat of engine block paint, then season it again. Yes, a lot of work just to get started, but it'll pay off in the long run
I bought a members mark hibred gas and pellet grill it was missing parts from manufatu still have not received them 4 weeks now I will never buy a China grill there junk it was almost 1000 bucks split side control modguel difrent work from jump. Should of known better China junk

heavy duty aluminum foil is a great idea. good to see it helped a bit. as with any setup, trial & error is part of figuring out the quirks of your gear. not sure what you're using, but another cheap addition is a $5 oven thermometer. I've never seen a grill lid thermometer worth anything, this grill included.
Love mine,, got it as a "hand me down" & still cranking out awesome bbq 😝
Can you use the sear burner to heat a pot of beans or fry potatoes on a fry pan?
I can't see why not. I'd prefer a side burner just because I feel you'd have more temperature control. But the sear burner works awesome (and adds to the "wow factor")...
Cool thanks...just picked this up at Gander Mountain for $349. Took me about 2 1/2 hours to build, but the directions were pretty precise. We'll see how it works in the next couple of days.
phantom357
that's great! $349 is about the right price. You'd probably see that drop by $50 come september or october. you're right about the assembly & directions, time consuming but pretty simple. Thanks for watching!
Thanks and keep those videos coming!!
Ok great thanks...will do...when cooking the ribs, do I still have fires going in both?
Jeffrey Dietschler
no. just smoke the ribs indirectly from the firebox. I recommend building a fire in the charcoal side too just during seasoning to get rid of any "manufacture"-like smells and/or tastes.
Ok thanks again
Thank you for sharing. Did you still have it?:)
no. unfortunately, the Smoke Hollow had to go after ~5 years of fun. the thin chinese metal could not handle the test of time. you can see the new smoker here: ruclips.net/video/qqy0jblf3Jk/видео.html
Boy oh boy! For a Drunken Sailor you do one heck of a review. Thankyou. Murf
Richard Murphy I figured no one ever does a review of a product after its been used. They're always brand new. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching !
I flipped my grill lines over because of you
Great review, thanks!
This is a great review/ I did use your gasket and JB idea, fixed the gasket to the lids as they are less susceptible to heat than the fire boxes.
thanks! the gaskets & sealing up any cracks really make a big difference with this grill.
no. the gasket i use here is a high temp Green Egg gasket specifically made to seal a grill
If you season your grill/smoker by coating everything in cooking oil and burning it on you won't have rust issues. It's people that don't do this that will..
+Jonathon Blackburn That's what I did to My last Sam's Club Grill after seeing reviews on the Rust.
Even that won't work in New England. Rust is just part of life.
I have searched everywhere for actual dimensions of the individual cooking surfaces. Would you be able to give me that info??
The sear burner cooking area is 16"x11". The gas & charcoal cooking areas are 16"x22", and the cooking grate for the smoker box is 12"x14".
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Are there parts available?
where did you find your grill grates? mine didnt come with cast iron heavy duty grates.
the grates seen here are the ones that came with the grill. they're coated, not cast iron
i was trying to look for some cast iron grates but the dimensions are hard to find.
Any idea if this grill would be able to handle a cast iron griddle on the grates of the gas part of the grill?
yes it does. I use my cast iron on the gas side all the time
Awesome, thanks!
Thank you Sir!
you are most welcome. thanks for watching!
Do you have any idea where I can find a cover for this grill? I've tried the website and there's none for this model.
www.amazon.com/Smoke-Hollow-GC7000-SH7000-7000CGS/dp/B000LAND2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425058968&sr=8-1&keywords=smoke+hollow+grill+cover
the link that tim lang posted is the same cover for about the same price
In terms of the rust, what’s the best way to prevent it?
Live in the desert
Tengo uno igualito y justo hoy me hice una carnita de pastor
very nice
I just purchased the display unit at Sams Club for $120, fully assembled
can't beat that. You got a great deal!
overstock (one of the cheapest websites) is selling it for $640, I'd lol.
wow. that's one of the highest prices I've seen it go for.
199.. at sams club right now.
shiit it's 369 here I just looked at it earlier today.
i stand corrected. you are right that one is 369
the one that looks just like it but does not have the smoker on the Right is 199 www.samsclub.com/sams/hybrid-grill-2016/prod19020312.ip?xid=plp1872-outd:product:1:26
pos grill didn't last 9 months in Central Florida
Michael Carla Central Fl meaning where? Near one of the coasts (Melbourne or Clearwater/Largo/St.Pete) or in the middle, Lakeland or Orlando. I like the design and functions, but the metal & paint quality will very probably send me elsewhere.
Richard Murphy the thin chinese metal is the main reason I feel its imperative to seal it up with the JB Weld , season it, give it a good coat of engine block paint, then season it again. Yes, a lot of work just to get started, but it'll pay off in the long run
Do Not
