I restored pianos for an old company where I live. Been selling pianos since the 60's. They had so many of these demo items from various manufacturers in storage. I don't think any of us even considered that they were valuable...
Back in the 80s I almost bought a rose 88 for about 300 bucks. Another mistake I made was trading my George text Studio upright for some Peavey PA equipment and a cheap Soprano saxophone.
@darylhudson777 Restoring old piano isn't really something. You can try at home unless you're prepared to buy a lot of specialty tools and do a lot of research. You never know what you're going to get into. Honestly, the ingenuity It took to make those old antique pianos. It's unbelievable. I worked in a shop with 2 other guys who specialized in their own parts. One guy who worked on the action and tuning. Another guy who worked on the cabinets. And the sound boards. And I did the finishing. Each one of those jobs requires extensive knowledge
You have to appreciate the level of innovative thinking it took to make something like that. If you gave people back in the '50s a 3D printer I can only imagine where we would be in technology right now
Rhodes made this little piano during the WW2, to make it more transportable than an heavy classic piano, and play for troops. That characteristic warm sound comes from the aluminum parts vibration. A pretty cool instrument and history too.
Seventy years old and still fascinated at how things go together, how they work, and what they are for. And I spent 22 years in Nuclear Power. Thank you!
Rhodes is a very cool instrument. Billy Preston’s Rhodes work on the Let it Be album added considerably to what was already the best band in the world.
This is something that needs to come back... Today is just a manual with some poorly angled 2d images in black and white. Having a cut away demonstration of how a mechanical thing actually works is nearly priceless in the repair and maintenance industry.
Those are sweet. I like to pair it up with a Twin for vibrato and reverb. (Our 73 is in pristine condition because it rarely goes out of the shop. I work for a backline company.)
I've always wondered what was going on inside the Rhodes ever since I played one and it wasn't plugged in and turned on yet it still made some sound. I figured it was vibrating metal inside.
i can’t wait til they get to all the insane dukat stuff in the later seasons. this show is so insane and so good at the same time. my favorite ST show by far. the world and characters feel so much more real and lived in than being on an enterprise ship. you feel these peoples lives and loved ones and losses because it’s just regular people with lives doing menial work on some space station. then the war stuff starts which is also insanely good and brings some fun conversations to star-trek like how the federation works and if it’s actually good for some planets and how the bureaucracy is kinda show and unhelpful to a lot of people
Fender Rhodes gave to jazz and smooth and bossa bands a fantastic sound! it was a great creation and today keyboards use that sound so often for smooth and jazz.Corea and Jarrett used Rhodes in 1969 with MIles,at the beginning of jazz rock era, ciao from italy.
Am I mistaken in thinking that Hammond also did something similar with a single key to demonstrate how the tonewheel generator system in their organs operated?
I have a Roland guitar with an (analog) synthesizer and the multi-pin chord. When I was deciding whether to buy it I couldn't find one ever sold online. All I could find was where someone had bought the manual for it. Perhaps it's useless without the manual
Ngl i played on a buddy's rhodes for a year, and the key travel was so "mushy" and lackluster in response that i got carpal tunnel. It sounded great, but the key travel was so terrible compared to a normal piano.
Magnetic resonance of the rod distances to a different tone of vibrations that resonances FALLOW through the thinking processes of each setups a lot of information too reconstructing the walls of wavelengths of harmonics associated with it you can imagine the guitars strings and the starting point of this contraption called the( sound induction magnetic basic acoustic) (simba) 😅
It's not because you can't get to the Keys and see them to demonstrate as the keyboard operates it's because it's so damn big and it takes two people to carry that you're going to convince the customer to work hard to buy your product know that's why you bring in a single key it's easy to carry and get the same point across because most likely the salesman don't play piano anyway
Real question. Why tf are the new Rhodes keyboards so freaking expensive? Could they seriously not create multiple lines of the instrument so it could actually be possible for normal people to own and play one? Normal people don’t have over 10k dollars for a single keyboard. They could make a portable model that is slightly cheaper and smaller. They could make a bass version that is considerably smaller and cheaper. They could make a bare bones version that uses a cheaper version of the keyboard action, or even no action at all and just synth keys or semi weighted keys. Considerably smaller and cheaper.
I saw one of these in my local thrift last year and left it sitting there because I couldn’t figure out what it was. It was $5. I’ll go kick myself now. 😂
it’s funny how it looks so ridiculous, but so important at the same time
It's a real keeper.
And the sub-titkles are on the way of everything.
It looks like a child's science project.
It’s good to know that the person that owns it recognizes it’s importance and takes care of it. 🙏🏻
"It's" is a contraction of "it is", and "its" is possessive.
@@slappy8941y'know no one likes you right?
@@slappy8941 oh sorry I’ll fix it 😉
@@slappy8941 Yeah, nobody really cares.
@@jordan11752don't fix it please
This video would have been 74% better if we heard someone play the one note samba.
hahaha. Yes
“you can really see the action”. Then they proceed to slap subtitles over the video so you can’t see.
I'm not sure, it probably can't be plugged in to an amp, maybe?

@@kingsway731 yes I know the craftsmanship of the past generations as my parents were born in the 1920's and my grandparents were born in the 1800's.
At last a Rhodes im talented enough to play! 😂
Underrated comment. LOL 😂
I'm on the same boat... ;-)
I love this channel. So many weird and wonderful items with stories around them!
"I mean really Ray, there's no action left in this key."

Please, make a full length video explaining the Rhodes music generation 😊
Doctor Mix has an hour long video, have yet to watch it, Just about to!
What an absolute gem of a piece of history. That is fantastic and need to be put on display!
I used to refinish piano keys for a guy in the San Jose BAY AREA in the late 90s and I absolutely love that JOB !! THANKS FOR SHARING
Seventy years old and still fascinated at how things go together, how they work, and what they are for. And I spent 22 years in Nuclear Power. Thank you!
This is actually a really cool way to demonstrate the mechanisms in a piano key! I actually was able to learn how it works from this!
Thanks so much for the understanding!
Man what a brilliant mechanism!! It allows for modulation from the shaking thats awesome

Before electronics, keyboards (such as this one) used tech similar to guitars - a moving "string" across a coil (pickup).
Yeah a friend had an electric grand by Yamaha that had 76 or 88 string courses and a separate pickup for each one.
I used to have a Rhodes Stage 73 back in 1979. It's one of the pieces I regret selling, which I did in about 1981.
Those are sweet.

Thats a Great Example of why that Instrument is a Percussion 💯
Incredible. Thank you!
I figured out how to tune a Rhodes in the middle of a jazz festival with the assistance of the piano tuner.
Also, This was late '90s, no smartphones.
After playing a Rhodes for decades, it's so cool to see this view. Only my ears saw it up until now :).
First video I saw of yours, subbed! It would be cool to see a breakdown of how each part worked
So beautiful! I'd love to have one!
I've always wondered what was going on inside the Rhodes ever since I played one and it wasn't plugged in and turned on yet it still made some sound. I figured it was vibrating metal inside.
I thought it *hilarious* that he brought up the One-Note Samba with this!
Amazing. More close up shot with sound please, lets pontification

The one note samba… what a great song to be mentioned.
Only works for the A section though ! 😂
I love the Rhodes pianos. So many great songs had them. Blues brothers movie is a great demonstration with Ray Charles.
I saw similar cross section in the piano store. I guess it's now a good practice to show how keys work.
Buddy found a Rhodes sitting on the curb as trash in the Village NYC. Loaded it up, restored it. Dude struck gold. So jelly of his find.

I remember seeing a pic of a 4-note Hammond organ demonstrator, complete with drawbar and tonewheel... they would take it to various churches.
This is breathtaking!
This is a Fender Rhoads moment!
Wow that sounded beautiful
So so cool to see inside.
At the Tyne Rhodes had the idea he was hammered 🤔🤣🤣🤣🙏🇬🇧
That thing is pretty neat.
Magnifique 👍
You've got serious dance moves!
That is awesome.
This is the kind of thing that 99% of people would throw away if they found it in the attic of a house they just moved into.
Ive got a couple of these from various manufacturers

You can tune it to play this one song from GTA V that just has one note

As a metal guitar player, this fender Rhodes is not what I was expecting lol
I was a fender Rhodes repair man.

Yes I can see "HOW THE ACTION OPERATES" while the giant text blocks it.
Man, I regret not taking music more seriously as a kid. I'd probably be an okay musician by now.
that 'one note samba' has remained young to be almost a century old😮
Great great grandad
"dealer demonstration" 😶
I thought at first this is an old guitar amp. So imagine how surprised I was to see the inside. 😅
I believe we had one in our highschool bandroom.
Is there a Pt. 2 to This?
i like the part where they showed us how it worked
I love the part when they told us what the note was.
"This is the rarest item" *proceeds to play around with it*
It is from the Røde company?
Until I read the comments, I had no idea what the device was nor what it was supposed to represent.
I would die to be next to that Vox organ
I want one *so* much.
Thats so stinkin cool
So I think this guy sells Fender Rhodes keyboards… How could we get in touch with him ???? Thanks

More common than you think.
The Wurlitzer 200 was my choice. More aggressive sound. And I wish I still had my Vox Continental that I see there. Good stuff

i stg i would still play the wrong note if i tried to use that piano
What year is that Vox Continental?
He didnt play it?????
Cameraman just touched it without asking.
It looks like the peltzer handy mate.
this is RIGHT UP MY ALLEY WTF
I like to play key!
What???? A stiff wire that jiggles in front of a coil???
What note is it? Middle c?
This is a sweet find 🫶🏼💯
that is so cool
