    This is a wonderful video and as a pet mouse breeder I really appreciate that you follow the same ethical standards for your feeder mice as a pet breeder should. Reptiles have to eat and seeing a push for more responsible, ethical feeder breeding over general feeder practices like back-to-back litters, extremely small enclosures, no enrichment, etc. is wonderful. Thank you.

I find it very difficult to get a good tutorial about how the mats and lamps are best placed, wired with the thermosthat etc and I always have a mess with the cables. i know this video is from 2019 but for anyone interested in mice as pets this is Not how you care for them this is like absolutely bare minimum for mice and it's a pretty sad life. But since they're feeders, it's not as big of a deal (and proper pet sort of care would make it hard to even get the babies outta the bin haha). If you have them as pets please do good research-- best thing for them to start is a 40 gallon tub; check out Emiology for pet mice and rats!

    If you have time to for your mice, an easy toy for enrichment is cutting a toilet paper tube up into rings and making a ball out of the rings. You can fill it with food or treats or vegetables, they have to roll it and chew it to get the food out, they love to play with the rings after they destroy it too. 💚 lovely set up.

    I realize this is a basic "how to breed video" but what about the whole picture?
    I recently bought mice to breed....I have 1 male and two females per bin, (2 bins, & 2 empty bins) I started so my BP would have food as I am in a rural area, (or I would have researched more prior to starting) Since no one has feeders around here, I decided to try and sell some once I have thriving colonies.( although, Where I live people's pets are full grown adults, so a lot of people need the larger mice, rats, jumbo rats and rabbits even)
    Question: To separate males from females after impregnation do they get their own bin? If I keep segregated tubs for males and female, will the males fight? Keep males solo? or simply keep mostly females?
    I will be euthanizing with CO2 a variety of sizes for frozen. Is this done with mostly males?
    (Note: I have done my homework on the correct way to euthanize safely and humanely...although I am not looking forward to it!)
    This may all be common sense to most, but I am just wanting to learn and do things correctly so I don't over look something
    ( for the sake of the animals as well as myself).
    This is what snakes eat, and supply is limited in my area, so it is what it is.... plus I may just save or even recoup a few dollars.

    I 've seen so many videos in which the mouse person recommends not breeding mice unless you know what you're doing or are an expert. Hogwash, I had mice when I was younger and bred them with no problems. I just let them go to it and let nature do what it's suppose to do. Yes, they do multiply but if you're ok with that, then what's the problem. There are many, many people when are looking for mice, as pets and as feeders. I used to give mine away to other mouse people or reptile owners...no worries. Nice video and great attitude.

    • @Reicha
      @Reicha 3 года назад

      That's because the mouse person cared about the mice's well being. They didn't mean you *can* not, but that you *should* not.
      It's easy to breed most animals, including humans.
      Otherwise life would have died out long ago.
      If you just supply food and keep the two genders together, most animals will reproduce fine. You'll lose a few to difficult births, parents eating the babies or just killing them outright, mom's dying early from overexertion, one gender killing the other due to different opinions in when to mate etc. and what doesn't kill them outright might still make them suffer. But, they will - indeed - reproduce. Such is life.
      A lot of reptile owners breed their own mice specifically so they don't grow up in miserable conditions, however, which is a great thing to see. This is a good enough set-up, _great_ for a feeder tank - too few houses and not enough space if it were a pet cage.
      Although I wouldn't keep more than two females per male and cage. Sometimes females get territorial about their young (mostly if the females are unrelated). With lab cages (like the one here) the lack of space for all of them (mouse females can think ahead) could make the mice cannibalize their young, or even attack other females to make room.
      They could also do this if the food supply seems scarce at any time.
      Just a few things to keep in mind, should anyone read this while setting up their breeding. I'm a lifelong pet breeder, but still no expert.
      Even (or, especially rather) scientists are still trying to optimize breeding.

  • @falcolf
    @falcolf 5 месяцев назад

    Just a note: newspaper ink is toxic over time so maybe use some hay instead? You can get it at pet stores in overpriced little bags or probably get a small bale of it for much cheaper at a feed store... or you could just collect some grass from a spot where you know pesticides haven't been used for free. It'll dry naturally and the mice will happily use it as it's often what they use in the wild!

    Hei there! I love your channel!
    I myself keep mice as pets since years and I agree with most of the things you said!
    But whilst I see that you breed mice for your snakes I think it would be a good idea to say that that bigger enclosures would be better for mice. Usually for about 4 pet mice a good sized enclosure would be at least 50cmx100cmx50cm. And it would offer lots of hides and entertainment, since mice are curious little animals that like to explore, climb and hide.
    I see that this is not always possible in breeding but for keeping pet mice it should be. (You can get used enclosures of that size for quite a good prize on ebay and it is easy to build hides yourself...)
    I do not judge you or other breeders but it would be good to explain these things to people who want to keep mice as pets.
    Also I would not advice people to breed mice if they do not feed them off. You can easily forget a male with some females (since sexing is quite difficult when they are young) and end up with more babies than you can care for.
    That said it is nice to see a video about pet mice and one can clearly see that you care for them a lot! ;)

    You never know what you're mice will like better for hides you might get mice that appreciate literal garbage more than something you spent 20 bucks on. So I recommend buying whatever's cheap, and/or cardboard boxes.
    I've seen people use Dollar tree hard plastic bowls, and then they cut a door out of it. Those should be more reusable.

    im trying to put together a pet mouse colony:) i really want my VERY well tempered male and my slightly more skittish (but absolutely beautiful) female to breed. i feel like the temperaments would be really great, and they would also be a very diverse group of babies. my male is a black and white pied, and his fur is suuuuper soft and long. he has black eyes. my female is a fawn color with short fur and ruby eyes. i’ve been doing research for forever and i think i’m finally ready!!

      @@earlydoc6122 coming back four years later to update! my male mouse ended up being infertile hahahaha. they both passed over the rainbow bridge so long ago now and they ended up being my last mice for awhile. but i'm back now to say that i am officially breeding show type mice this year! personally i am much more thorough with my mice's enclosures than this video because my mice are SO much less stressed, better tempered, and healthier when they are provided with ample space, tons of clutter, different substrates, sprays, forage, and things that stimulate their brains. also suitable wheels & substrates are important too which i notice are a big issue in the mouse breeding community also. i'm also more thorough in my entire process because i am a show type breeder so i have way less litters than most breeders do. i focus more on passion than profit because i love my animals :)

    Excellent! New subscriber here! I cant get a snake until I graduate University but I look forward to the future everyday!! Planning to be as self sustaining as possible too. Is it cheaper to raise a colony of mice for your snake? Of course I will probably need to supplement the diet at first. Is it cheaper to just buy frozen mice or buy food for mice?
