- This is the making of the alternate fan sequence I made for the DVD version of the Gremlins 2 "film break" scene. I made it alone, in a two months period, with (computer-enhanced) puppets I re-created for this project.

WHAT IS IT?
In the middle of the movie Gremlins 2, there is a sequence where the film seems to break, and where the gremlins invade the projection booth. For the VHS edition in the early 90's, they reshot a special sequence where the VHS tape seemed to be torn apart and in which the gremlins invaded a John Wayne movie. The DVD just kept the original theatrical version.
This is the alternate sequence I made, supposed to replace the theatrical one on the DVD.
HOW IS IT MADE?
The creatures effects are all made with puppets. I made a new mold out of a hard cast of one of the original sculptures from the production. I created a batch of new foam puppets especially for this project. Their performances are enhanced by computer effects, which makes them able to do nearly anything, from running to jumping or facial expressions. The entire shooting takes place in a bluescreen studio, arranged in my basement, in order to superimpose the gremlins in the chosen movies.
WHO AM I ?
Sacha Feiner - I am a movie and animated movie director, special effects creator and sculptor, in Brussels.
I made several short films, documentaries, and cartoons; I also work as a graphist.
In 2007 and 2008, I made an animated series and recut trailers that were played at the BRUSSELS INTERNATIONAL FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL (largest genre festival in Europe), before each screening.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
I have been a gremlins fan since I saw the first movie as a kid and it has always been my dream to be part of such a project. I own one of the largest Gremlins collections in the world; tons of merchandising products and several original screen-used props. I am truly passionated with these creatures (and their movies), as well as with special effects. I am lucky enough to be able to afford the whole making of something like this, entirely written, produced and directed by me.
HOW LONG AND HOW MUCH?
The whole production was two months long. It has been finished on 15th july, 2008.
This is a fan, non profit project. I did everything alone, from the filming to the compositing. I only had assistants for the puppeteering. The overall budget, including the purchasing of the original sculpture, the HD and studio equipment, the molding and painting of the puppets and the editing, was about US $3000. This is also an answer to something Joe Dante said in an interview, when the journalist asked why they did not shoot any new alternate sequence for the DVD edition: "I guess there was no budget"! Indeed, the purpose is also to show that it is possible to render a professional, entertaining and well done sequence for... nearly nothing.
Can we just skip the formalities and hire this guy to direct the next Gremlins film, freak this guy did all this basically by himself , he's amazing
for a budget of just above $3,200, I am shocked at how amazing this is. My hat is off to you sir.

Here's my personal feeling, you can never have too many Gremlins in the second one "Gremlins 2: The New Batch". Rick Baker done a 100% awesome fantastic realistic work on his Gremlin and Mogwai Effects!
Wow this too was awesome. Even the making of video was done top notch! Your Gremlins movie was totally totally awesome. I have been a huge fan of the Gremlins since I was a little kid and I was so thrilled to see the Gremlins back in action. Awesome doesn't even come close to describing how good of a job you did! So on behalf of all us Gremlin fans out there, THANK YOU! YOU RULE!
C'est la seconde fois que je regarde ton film + making of.
je vais donc faire ce qu'aurais du faire dés la première fois en 2008 c'est à dire te féliciter pour ta passion et ton superbe travail.
je sais ce que c'est, j'en ai passé des nuits blanches devant mon ordi pour une seule seconde d'animation, des journées interminables à shooter et reshooter une séquence qui te joue des tours etc.
il faut énormément de talent et de patience pour arriver à un tel résultat.

VERY well done, i am in a high school video class and i was just blown away at your dedication, hard work, and the end result. This seemed as good, if not better than the graphics that they used in the movies. You, my friend, I would think would be high on the list of being a consultant for story, puppets, and effects. J'étais comme un gamin devant la vraie video, mais alors là pour le making of, pire, je suis là avec un grand sourir, à voir tout l'amour et la passion qui à été mis dans ce projet, et pour un resultat final parfaitement identique aux films originaux, au départ je croyais que c'était la vraie suite quand j'ai commencé la vidéo... C'est pour dire.

You need to be any Gremlins 3 project - I hope Hollywood have taken notice - who better to direct a Gremlins film than someone who loves the material, understands it and who has already shown what can be done for a tiny budget - give this guy a $75million budget and he will make an awesome movie.. Fantastic stuff my friend!

oh god please do gremlins 3. i just watched gremlins 2 and looked online to see if they have gremlins 3 and to see what your doing its awesome. indiana jones and batman cameos just rock lol
This is amazing. I hope for gremlins 3 they go back to the first batch design for the generic gremlins. The darker skin and the original body shape was much better than the one used in gremlins 2. I like the patterns better on them too.

j'ai vu sur un site qu'il y a gremlins 3 qui est aparament déjà sorti mais aïe aïe je ne trouve pas de lien de téléchargement correspondant au film j'aimerai le voir et ils sont payant je veux pouvoir télécharger gratuitement
Contrairement à goumyz, je suis d'accord avec ton commentaire sur les images de synthèse. Un film comme Indy IV est gâché par le déluge de CGI. La surenchère à laquelle on assiste depuis quelques années me fait immédiatement sortir d'un film. Et j'ai la nostalgie des bonnes vieilles marionnettes : Gremlins mais aussi la plante Audrey II dans le remake de La petite boutique des horreurs, Dark Crystal... La magie de ces films fonctionne toujours aujourd'hui.

So I take it those puppets are fan-made replica puppets? If so, then that is really awesome! They look exactly just like the puppets that were made for Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) and they don't look any different. But I wish they had made the eyef those puppets move left and right and blink instead of computer-enhancing the eyes. I wonder if batgremlin sells some of his puppets on ebay.

Do you mean the gremlins from the original Joe Dante movies? The best sources are the vintage Cinefex magazines, still possible to find but you'll have to dig!
