I always thought that Jamie was a horrendous pundit, because of his opinions. This video is a very strong argument to state my case.
Micah, on the other hand, is getting better and better. Love the guy!
Jamie knows his football and played at the highest possible level in midfield, have a bit of respect kid. Phillips certainly has a greater range of passes in his arsenal and is a more talented passer. Rodri is a better player, as of now. But Rodri has never been credited with his arsenal of passes but rather his immaculate positioning defensively, his ability to play in small spaces and his off the ball awareness(which are all world class). Guardiola knows a player when he sees one and he bought Phillips with plans to integrate him into a team with Haaland to get the range of passes from deep midfield in behind opposition defenders, it’s a slow gradual change for pep into a different style of play.
@@billyyeah7530 I do respect Jamie as a player and I would never deny his experience, but in the last couple of years he had some very weird takes on many occasions (examples: his constant criticism on Mourinho, his opinion about Spurs' fullbacks Doherty and Reguilón, etc.). Of course, Phillips is a fantastic midfielder (and, in my opinion, far more complete than Rodri in terms of playing characteristics) and I do highly rate him. I hope he gets time at City, but as of now and as you said in your response to my comment, Rodri is the better passer (and probably one of the best passers in the world in his position). Since the video is about the best present 11 and not the 11 with the best potential, Jamie is not right on this one.
P.S.: Setting a condescending tone by calling someone a "kid" doesn't make you win the argument ;) Have a great one.

Rodri's been criminally underrated by everyone but people who watch Manchester City, with no disrespect to Fabinho cause he's a great player but there's no way he deserved to be a Ballon D'or Nominee ahead of Rodri. Rodri's been absolutely fantastic for us and on top of that he added crucial goals that won us vital points to win the league. Hence why you nearly always see him at the top of the pass completion % statistics because he's almost exclusively making short passes. Rodri is very good at what he does but to put his passing in the same category as phillips is just ridiculous. Phillips passing range extends so far beyond rodris that its a joke of a comparison hence why redknapp is looking at Richards like he's a fucking idiot

When you consider that Rodri was behind a mid-30s Fernandinho in the pecking order for a season or two, it takes someone that Guardiola really trusts to fulfill that role.
Though its quite true.. imagine playing CDM for lower side 😂😂 CDM is the hardest position when your team sucks. Saying easiest doesn't play down the importance of the role though. Currently, the hardest position in Man City is the two accompanying the CDM and the fullbacks.

@@bigmulli4541 I respect yours also, but in a defensive midfield position Fabinho is much better defensively, backed up by the fact he is also great at CB, something I absolutely do not think Rodri could do, they both score the occasional screamer, and Rodri’s short passing is better while I’d say Fabinho’s long passing is better. I feel as if Rodri is more suited to the Man City team who dominate the game and don’t need a proper defensive midfielder, just a pivot man to build the play off of, while in a high pace team like Liverpool’s, or even a worse team than those two, he’d be exposed.

I get it's mostly banter and even though I disagree with the Phillips > Rodri passing statement, it's all in good fun. Fellow countryman and all.
However 19:46 rolled around and Redknapp said something utterly shocking and left me in utter disbelief. How can a professional pundit make such a ludicrous statement?!? I mean you don't have to analyse games to see through the insanity of what he said. Cruyff and Guardiola have been pretty vocal about the importance of the holding midfielder. It is literally the most important position in Pep's system. He himself played the position as a player and has been thoroughly descriptive as to how much a CDM influences the flow, the interpretation of the movement both defensively and offensively.
I'm paraphrasing here, but it's been said in interviews that if his CDM does his job perfectly, you barely hear his name, but makes the whole thing tick. I get why the position is so overlooked by the average viewer, it's basically the "dirty work," but to be an actual pundit and have such abysmal knowledge on literally the most influential footballing system of this decade... just absurd and totally laughable.
And to further my argument, just look at what happened to Bielsa's Leeds once his CDM in Kalvin got injured and missed most of the season.
It's like saying every RB can fill in Trent's shoes by just "spamming" crosses.
