    Magnificent footage. I don't know where the newsreel got the 104 from - it was actually 112.5 (reached twice on the same run)!

      marsvltor2 What's funny is that the driver didn't know he was doing 112. He thought he was doing the posted line speed of 90. Speedometers weren't standard in the cabs of these engines when they were first built so you would need to know your speed based on experience and how the engine was riding. The driver didn't know until Gresley himself entered the cab through the passage in the tender and said something like, "Ease up on it lad, don't you know you've hit 112 mph twice?" I don't remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of that.

      I was thinking about that too. Perhaps the newsreel was referring to average speed. Silver Link did manage to stay above 100 mph for several miles.

      @@1987VCRProductions The speedometer was supposed to be fitted, however it did not arrive in time for the first run.

    It's 112.5 MPH not only 104 MPH, then what's the difference between an A3 if it could only achieve that speed ? :/

      Doncaster works kept the loco intact for some time after withdrawal in the hope that it would find a private buyer. Unfortunately, nobody seemed to want to spend a few thousands on this historic loco. BR had already saved Mallard from the same class, so they probably did not wish to put aside another. Silver Link was chosen for withdrawal, as it was high-mileage; it had been a regular on the Elizabethan in 1961. Sadly, of the A4 Pacifics withdrawn at the end of 1962, the first five, in fact, two had been immaculately turned out for the Duke of Kent's wedding in June, 1961, and the reserve loco followed early in 1963.

      Billy Butlin wanted to buy Silver Link for preservation at his camp but the Eastern Region messed him and instead he bought Duchess of Hamilton and Duchess of Sutherland instead

      The original Crosby 3-chime the A4 carries pre-war.They were taken down during the war due to sounding too much alike air raid sirens.The post war chime they carried is a licensed production, albeit being a semitone higher in pitch.

    • @andrewtaylor5984
      @andrewtaylor5984 Год назад +1

      Gadwall was bombed in April 1942. I think the incident about a loco blowing up is the fate of Silver Fox in August 1936. It managed 113 mph, but the inside cylinder overheated. It still managed to reach London, though.

    Even if it did run at 104 it still beat the city class
