Tip for interested buyers: For reading apps that have page flip animations, you can add a delay so that it will just flash once in HD mode and skip the animation. Its excellent for the kindle app.
Calling Project Gutenberg "trash" is ridiculous.
It feels like you missed some things here... if you had a Air 3C to place side-by-side you'd see that the color of the 4C body is more gray and the BOOX logo has been moved to a different place. Probably not a big deal to most people, but there are visual differences that you missed. I don't understand why you're so tough on them making small changes under the hood when iPad after iPad is released in the exact same shell, with incremental updates/improvements from one version to the next. It seems like you're holding Boox to a higher standard than the other manufacturers. There are some major improvements under the hood though... more ram, significantly brighter front light as well as the switch to Android 13. To me it feels like Onyx was aware that there were compromises in the air 3C that they wanted to address so... the 4C is an incremental update without a price increase.
The reason you can't upgrade Android makes these devices basically e-waste soo quickly is an alarming thing to me. And a main reason I honestly keep using Kobo e-readers. Because Android versions go quite quickly with them coming SDK versions. Meaning newer apps might not work on those devices. And with this releasing with Android 13, which is already 2 majors versions behind, this is a problem.
My phone is currently also on Android 13. Absolutely no problem whatsoever. Everything stays working, haven't seen any app that didn't work. And you still get security updates. So what's actually the problem?
I have a Pixel 3 phone still on stock Android 9. Apps work fine.
I actually want to downgrade. I prefer Android 9 or 10.
@@AHBdV It will be obsolete faster if you can’t upgrade
@@WeirdAlSuperFanNext few years, several big apps like Kindle and other social media app going to use newer SDKs which means A9 probably won't be supported since as of right now, the minimum(not recommend) version to support apps like Kindle is Android 9.0+ which is insane.
Wonder if Boox will release a Note Air 4 b/w this year or is the GO 10.3 their product for b/w?
I thought my laptop broke 0:46 xD
@@josephjeps hahaha
Nice presentation though that demonstrates the silliness of today's upgrades
2:50 Suppose to keep electronic devices away from magnets, what are the safe points with this strong magnetic case?! can you kindly prove it?
The guy lives in the CRT era and have no idea what he is talking about. Magnetism having an effect on PCB, really? Probably doesn't even know what a PCB is.
Project Gutenberg "trash"? Three words I never expected to see in one sentence.
It's so weird. If I link the table to my Dropbox, there are a few folders I can't find. But if I go to those folders on the web browser, they're actually there. Any tips?
Why didn’t they go with Android 14? I understand 15 has just been released, but 14 has been around for a while.
Typically epaper devices are one or two versions behind traditional tablets and smartphones
I'm not sure what it is but it is literally always been that way
I read on Reddit that when the tablet manufacturers purchase the cpus, they only purchase the OS license for that specific version of Android from the cpu supplier. To update the OS would cost them more per license, and since the screens cost more than LCD or IPS screens per unit, they have to cut costs somehow.
Also, it forces you to buy a new unit rather than just update the OS, thus insuring future purchases.
Only way to fix this is if the US and European governments said enough with designed obsolescence e-waste from still functioning hardware. No more sealed units. Make units like the Super Note that is modular and upgradable in theory. Also, as long as the unit still works, make the OS upgrades for at least 3 or 4 generations of the OS.
@ I’m waiting for the Supernote before I make my decision but it probably won’t work for my music scores.
@@jthomas4057 seems BS to me. Android is an open-source operating system, there is no license.
The note taking app looks so much fun! 👍🌱
Maybe they usually rais the prize, but they didn’t for the boox go 6 either. Here in Sweden it is a great deal cheaper than the Boox poke 5.
Hurrah we are going back to colors like in 1985 for over 500 dollars
I get that, but don't forget that this is a development of e-paper. That was never meant to replace your TV or tablet, it was meant to give a screen that reads like paper and gives a battery life of weeks so you can just charge your device, go on holiday and read, just like you would with a book. Development has been slow as this is a niche market, but it's still significant development for what it is.
@ Color eink today is just too outdated, a step backward and doesn’t justify a high price.
@ Respectfully disagree. Outdated means it has been surpassed by something. By what? Again: we are talking about the reading/taking notes space here. I usually read books, newspapers or magazines and might occasionally take a note. If I went on a holiday and read 2 books and a few newspapers or magazines, I come home with battery to spare despite not having charged once. What other type of device does this?
@RTomassi it's been outdated by led and amoled screens. Checkout the resolution of the cheapest ipad. Retina level resolution, true tone display.
I don't trust onyx boox with quality control anymore. Bought Palma 1 and the screen light stopped working after a week.
Oh and it randomly gets extremely hot.
Then why not warranty it? It’s obviously defective, obviously the company can’t help if you don’t do anything, get a replacement or refund.
The hallmark of this tablet seems to be its incessant ghost images.
It is better to be aware of this before buying. For my part, I returned it after only 30 minutes of use.
I recently bought and returned Go 7 not for ghosting but for how fuzzy the text is when you turn on backlight which you have to due to how gray the display is. How was your experience with air 4c with the color layer effect on the BW text?
@04:15 it is already over priced.
I don't know why these eink tablets are being this much over priced.
Regular tablets with flagship specifications are being available at fraction of its cost.
Infact I wonder about this over pricing. I believe it is just exploitation of opportunity.
E-paper and LCD tablet screens are in completely different categories and cannot be compared when it comes to supply and demand
It is not a revelation to anyone that tablets are cheaper, you can buy 12-in tablets on wish for $39
The epaper screen technology is significantly more expensive with fewer players making them, and less people buying them,
so that is why
E-ink only has one manufacturer: E-ink. It's a monopoly. Combined with the lower manufacturing scale of the devices, the prices are as they are.
They're not for everybody, and those who like E-ink really find it useful.
Absolutely. In terms of actual e-paper screens, 99% of them come from one single company E INK TAIWAN
There is some Chinese brands that make electronic paper but have no presents, and pale in comparison
It is 100% a Monopoly
Not only is e-ink a monopoly... but the amount of devices produced is extremely small compared to regular tablets. Samsung will sell millions of tablets. Boox is probably more along the lines of thousands.. That has a huge effect on price.
When you getting old and your eyesight not as good as young age, you will know the value of eink.
It's kinda of absurd for a consumer to lust after the upgrades which really add no real value
