Thanks for these vids! Decided to take the dust of my mini quads and totally forgot how to use BLHeli to program my ESC's. Big thank you to you Joshua! Quand is flying again after 4 years away from the hobby!
Major Kudos Joshua, there may be other youtubers with bulk followers, and big on showmanship hype, but when I need clear usable technical answers, you da Man!
I've been looking for info on how to flash via passthru. Just flashed and calibrated my ESCs - worked like a charm! Can't wait to take my rig out again! Thank you for taking the time to make great instructional videos!
i'm running cleanflight 1.11 in a board not supported by newer firmware (BRF3) and the passthrough worked the same way. which was surprising and awesome.
Thank you so much this video would've saved me 2 weeks of messing around trying to figure out what was wrong and realizing that damped light was enabled on a single esc and the other motors were set to spin up over 100 extra points than that individual motor thank you if only i had found this sooner
Ha, any time I have a problem I refer to your videos!! I almost always find the answer as long as I find the correct video! Thanks again and keep up the good work, we love ya!!
Thank you so much Mr. Bardwell, you are my guru :-) I'm following you since I've contracted the "disease" of this hobby :-D And today I'm starting to be a patron! Thanks againg and keep up the good job!
Dear God like Person.. (hahah...I've always wanted to say that...no offence to the dietity of your choice...). I just watched the whole thing. And I watched again...then I stopped and copied your every move...and I flashed my lowly racestare RS20a to most recent version. All through my Omnibus FC from BG. And I even changed motor direction on TWO motors using the BLHeli interface...I felt like a minor dietity myself....hahah. The point of all of this is to say "Thank you" for the guidance and time you provide. Really, thank you very very much.
We need a video on betaflight 3.0 when you get time please josh! Lots of new configurable parameters in the new one and I'm lost! Dare say I'm not the only one either!
+Joshua Bardwell yeah, fair enough. I've already promised myself I'm not going to upgrade until it's released as stable. I have a nice tune at the moment and don't want to mess anything up. Granted I could just roll back, but who needs the hassle! I'll wait until you feel it's time to release the video of your take on it and use that to help me decide if it's worthwhile for me to update.
Hi. I am at 2:32 in the video, is a "bootloader" a piece of software or hardware. As SILABS C2 seems to be a USB piece of hardware? Greatly appreciate your work.
Hey Josh, I see the new BlheliSuite has SK bootkoader as an option, does that mean the requirements from your older video no longer stand? Can we use FC passthrough even to flash SK escs?
Joshua, the motors spin up almost immediately. I did put props on with same result. I'm waiting on a new board to see if that is it. BTW I'm using 4 in 1 harness, Omnibus has a port for this. Then soldering signal wires directly to ESC's.
Check your endpoints, I guess, but your endpoints can't be too far off because the ESCs wouldn't arm if the motor outputs were not at idle. Are you at default PIDs? In theory, super high PIDs would cause this.
DShot 1200 is freaking amazing. Please do a video on new ESC protocols 🙏 BlHeli_32 and DShot 1200 is my new standard for what I want/need when building a quadcopter now. 🌮
Hi Joshua, Cheers and thanks for this video. It has definitely helped me out. I have ran into one snag however. When I open BLHeli, hit Connect then click Read Setup, my motors proceed to spin up. Thank goodness for smokestoppers. In either case, my I have 12A Emax BLHeli ESC 2204 Emax motors, and a SP Racing F3 FC. My interface on BLHeli is SILabs BLHeli Bootloader Cleanflight. My ESC's support one shot and I'm attempting to flash them with a firmware that has oneshot125, but I'm not able to get to flashing them b/c of the motor spinning issue. Any help would be much appreciated, Regards, Greg
I like your explanation, but the bigian ESC that is connected to Arduino Uno I don't understand, for example the Esc image in my profile, can it be explained?
hey joshua.........great videos ..........i have an omnibus f3 and emax 35a esc's............will inav do the same as betaflight for passthrough or just use betaflight passthrough for the esc's.....i use inav for gps.....thanx..........
I would speculate that inav supports passthrough, because it was forked from betaflight, and passthrough is too useful to abandon. But I don't know for sure.
Running BF 4.0.2 and BLHeli 32.6.1.2(?) using passthrough as described above and trying to reverse motors on Beta F3 board. BLHeli says I am connected but no chimes and when trying to read I get blank dialog box. Only 3 interfaces show up (K,Land M) and only M (Betaflight/Cleanflight) does not give error message so "must" be correct? Other ideas? What did I miss? Thanks as always for great vids!
+Joshua Bardwell I've flashed Betaflight 3.1.1 to my Betaflight F3 Flight controller, and I'm trying to use the BlHeli Suite (v16.6.9.0.1) to reverse the motor direction on 2 of my ESC's, which are the Lumenier 30A 32bit Silk, using Dshot 600, and supposedly run the BlHeli_S firmware. I'm selecting interface E, and serial port connects successfully, but ESC#1 setup read fails. Do you know if there are any tips to get the ESC's to read properly?
Awesome video. This is my first drone and I got to flash my esc and only one come up, that is the master. Not really sure what to do. Should I just flash that one? Some time it will show another one and it will say erased or unknown firmware.
Thanks for your reply. I am such a noob. I think I messed it up. I was messing with it and thought maybe I will just flash the one that I could see. Went to 16.6 from .2 and that didnt help. Tried to go go back down to .2 but it says it cant find the file. I hooked it up to beta flight to the check the motors and now the motor that I flashed wont turn on.... man I think i messed up big. I should of just waited for your reply...
No, passthrough is the same as ever. The Chrome app uses passthrough. That's how it talks to the ESC. I think maybe you meant, is BLHeliSuite dead? BLHeli_32 doesn't work with the Chrome app anymore because of the DRM. So no. BLHeli_32 only works with Suite_32.
I have got the stock Hobbywing 30a platinum (those are on the blheli compatibility list), am i able to program those with the betaflight/cleanflight serialpassthrough via the UART ports of my Flight controller ? Or do i need a USB to FTDI adapter ?
i learn so mutch from you!! my first buils. were i crasy op the motor. did what you say. and it fly.but got one say my blhelli´s is bad- its littlebee 30 a. but a have no problem f4 fc. 2204-2300kv-. but can i only use 125 or can i go higher? hear a lot popple say. just its blheli´s the kan be flasht to d shot! but dont know! what you think. just leave 125 and then only have 4/2 hz: even it´s a f4 fc that can take 8/8 and more. dont need- i blive is it better with 4/4hgz gyro? but most the esc. cause you say 125 dont go higere then 4"ghz- Yes? :-) everting wo)rks. ust cunfused. anf raderuse dshot if its better and my esc can take it! :-D
Thanks Joshua! Just wondering about a couple things. Does the BLHeli Suite work on a Mac? I hope so- everything else works on it and I have no problem connecting Cleanflight, Betaflight or Raceflight configurators which brings me to this- I've been struggling with the RF Config on a Revolt- it bricked my DYS XS30A ESC and fried the board (with their suggested fix of "tweezing" the signal) so they sent me another revolt and when I resoldered everything I still get the same ESC error on #1.I noticed a new target on Boris's list for revolt and really want to dump RF and flash with Betaflight. My longwinded question to you is this: Will I be able to reflash the ESC 1 using the passthrough and BLHeli Suite? Or should I just tear down and throw the revolt in the ocean, get new esc's and start new?Btw, thanks as well for all your other good work and quadcopter knowledge sharing- as a nube in the hobby I have found it immensely helpful- still practicing with simulators and playing with a small Hubsan but I've got three builds on the bench and am excited to start flying out on the farm in the spring... g in Ohio
BLHeliSuite is a windows app and will not run under a Mac. Possibly you could use Parallels to get it working but I don't know about that. I suggest trying the BLHeli Chrome app. ruclips.net/video/8kNB8fsnYdk/видео.html
If the ESC can be flashed, blhelisuite will do it, but it is possible that the bootloader is corrupted and you would need to use the c2 interface. ruclips.net/video/b-7VFt3IhhE/видео.html
Joshua, Great video. I have a problem. I'm using Spektrum dx6 radio, Spektrum sat rx, omnibus FC, dys 20 blheli ESC's. New build and have configured through CF and blheli suite. Everything looks great on PC, motor test and receiver. When I unplug and test with radio motors spin all the way up. Can't figure it out. Can you help? Dan
+dan28382 do they spin up slowly while props are off? If so, that's normal. Put your props in and go hover. If they shoot rapidly to full that's different.
Joshua, Thanks for the fast response! No they come up quickly, I did try putting props on and same result. Can't figure it out. Waiting for a second Omnibus FC to show up to see if board is bad. Dan
Thx Joshua !!! u made may day one off my moters was running wrong direcion and thanks to your video problem solved and i lernt a lot more about esc Thank you buddy for ur wel explaint video !!!
Josh - Quick question. I am in the process of building a new quad and I want to be able to do BlHeli Pass-through and and I know that not all FCs support it. I also want to be able to do blackbox logging with the FC. I also want vBat and nothing less than F3. What FC would you recommend I consider? Thanks again and love your channel!
Don't know of any U. S. resellers but I haven't really looked. Consider the MRM mantis if you want something domestic. Only does 4k but especially with Betaflight 3.0 that's less of a limitation than it used to be.
Great Channel Joshua! I'm getting an error when I try to initialize BLHeli which states, "Initialization of Flight Controller Denied! Please check all motors are stopped and disarmed" Any idea how to get around that?
hi Joshua.. one question do i need to have my motors connected because every time that i power my esc's my motors go crazy... and blheli dosnt reconize the esc's... i have naze 32 rev6 just bootloaded witth 14.3 version Thank you.
Hi Joshua, Im trying to program my ESCs(Thriverline Acrotor BLHeli-32 ESC 30A) to reverse the direction in 2 of the motors, 1wire passthrough connection is failing to tonnect to my FC(Readytosky Naze32 Rev6 Full Version). Im using BLHeliSuite(16.7.14.9.0.1), I Can't read any info about my ESCs. Can you help me out?
It would help if you included the exact error message you're getting. Unfortunately die to RUclips comment notifications system I probably won't see your response so feel free to email me.
I have had another problem with connecting. When I plug in my battery it powers up my escs and my ubec. my ubec powers up my osd (micro minim osd) and it is connected to my uart 1 of my f303 v2.1. the problem was that the uart 1 is connected to the USB port or something like that. so what I have to do it un power my osd and it works fine. I haven't moved it over to uart 2 because I'm lazy but maybe that's the fix :) love the vids Joshua so informative.
Desync with reversed motors is only a problem on a few ESCs. In general, it is fine. My normal procedure is to wire straight-through and then reverse in software. It's never been an issue so far.
I cain't find it. Or maybe I imagined it. A video you made showing the batch programming of ESC's using parallel wired pins to plug up the ESC's in the advent the FC method isn't available. I searched thru all the vids posted and came up with nothing on the subject. This vid is as close as it gets. Is it no longer up for view? It was a while ago I saw a vid on it, seemed a bit more complex , if I recall, when the FC passthrough doesn't support the feature. .
Hi Joshua.I have a BLHeli mystery with my Little Bee Favourite BLHeli S 30 Amp 2S-6S ESC's. They have been fine on my 4S quad on which I have now installed 6S motors and a 6S PDB, if I plug in a 4S or 5S the motors start fine, if I plug in a discharged 6S Lipo the motors start fine. If I plug in a fully charged 6S lipo I get no beeps from the ESC's and the motors will not start. I have used BLHeli Suite to install the latest Rev 16.6 firmware but the problem still remains. Could you possibly unlock this mystery as I am about to give up :-)
Unreal that four years later I have to recur to your video. I'm trying to read BLHeli on my Revolt FC but I can't connect. Being a Revolt would this video apply? I ve been trying to set the wizard on Flight One but the motors won't idle. It's like there's a miscommunication between motors and esc. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
BLHeli32 cannot do passthrough on FlightOne or FalcoX. So before you can do passthrough, F1 configurator has a button that temporarily flashes CleanFlight to the FC, then flashes back after you're done.
@@JoshuaBardwell I don't think the ESC's are BLHeli 32. Probably BLHeli_S. In any case, I gave up on Flight One. It so happens that after four days trying to get the Revolt to work with some "help" form their support, not it happens that they're in a software transition that doesn't support the old flight controllers. I went with BetaFlight. Everything is working except the directions of the motors which I would like to do thru BLHeli Configurator. It doesn't see the ESC's. Confused, but thanks a million for responding Joshua. You have a lot of followers.
Hi Joshua Iam confused about one thing! I have 2 motors reversed and I want to flash and update my little bees so do I need to set all my motors normal before flashing ? Or can I just go into the options tab and choose not to sync esc's for motor rotation? Thanks in advance 👍
Have you selected interface "E"? Do you see the COM port of the flight controller in the pull down menu? If not, the drivers aren't installed correctly. I probably won't see your response so email me directly of you need more help.
hello I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH the latest version of BLHelli and cleanflight they will not work together as described and after following your directions. I get an error message that states Intialization of serial 1wire pass through or 4way interface failed. Please check cleanflight revision for support of serial 1wire pass through or 4way interface. I would really like to be able to us this program, it might solve a lot of my problems. Thank you David
Have you got the correct Interface selected in BLHeliSuite? Should be ... I think it is Interface F, Silabs (Cleanflight Passthrough). Can you connect to your flight controller with the CleanFlight GUI configurator? There are no known incompatibilities between CF 1.14 and BLheliSuite. On top of that, the error you're getting is a communication issue between BLHeliSuite and the FC, so your ESCs don't have anything to do with it.
I hope you're still monitoring this vid. I have connected to blheli_32 suite, but its only detecting 3 of the 4 esc's. please help I've checked to see that they all work, and they do. What is wrong?
Joshua Bardwell thanks a lot for replying. I can't figure it out, but I'm about to do a motor change anyway. So I'll swap that esc and see if it works. Thanks again, and keep up the great work
If using Betaflight do I still use the clean flight interface? I’ve always used the Chome app and tmi have these BL Heli 32 so in trying to set up my new build. Thanks for your help.
Joshua Bardwell already flashed and fully set up with 3.2.1 all my motors are going wrong direction so I need to connect to BL 32 and change directions
Joshua Bardwell solved my issue. I accidentally opened an older version of pas thru and once I opened 32 it was a piece of cake. Thanks for the videos and help!
Hey wanted to ask about ESC calibration. I have calibrated esc's and ppm max value in BLheli was 2020. Did some digging and I dropped my max throttle value from betaflight from 2000 to 1970 and calibrated my esc's again and got ppm max throttle value to 1980 avg from all esc's. So is this the right thing to do ? And is it ok to get different values on ppm max on different esc's and then manually drop the values to the same in this case 1980ms or do I calibrate once more and leave them at the values they have? I'm using Lumenier Lux as FC with 3.0.1 Betaflight and I have the littlebee 20A esc's.
+M.R yes, this is the right thing to do. You can work max_throttle back up a bit to get a little more resolution out of your throttle channel, if you want. No, it doesn't matter if the values are slightly different.
Thank you! But this raises another question I found old screenshot from blheli when I flashed them for the first time 5 months ago and the value of ppm max was 1976 and max throttle in BF was 2000. Only variant there is FC. So does the current 2020ms value mean that esc's have been through some "ripping" or is this because of the FC. Also wanted to ask what ppm max throttle value should be the stopping point in max_throttle's tune? Is it like when ppm max throttle is noticeably desynced in esc's or when the ppm max throttle out grows the 2020ms value?
Hey man, for some reason my Aikon 30a ESC's are flashed with blheli_s 16.2 but the blhelisuite does not show all the options that your screen and everyone elses does. It doesn't give me a box where I can activate damped light, and it doesn't show all of the governor options. Any idea? I'm at a loss man
I mean, the _S options are the same as the regular options, just some of them are fixed or set automatically. Leave timing and demag at defaults. You could try adjusting endpoints according to my "maximum resolution ESC calibration" video.
Hey Josh, I seem to be having a rather unique problem. I recently got a set of EMax Lightning 30A which promise great things, but I can't get BLHeli Suite to find them. It connects to my Naze32 (acro rev6), but when I press the Check button, it returns all blanks "---". The log says 0 ESCs found and when you dig down to the error the msp recv fails. The kicker is, it seems like they're working fine otherwise. They power up and spin motors no problem. BUT, I would like to have access to the settings to change motor directions and stuff. Any ideas??
I sure am and they give the expected tri-tone greeting without the two longer tones. I had a set of DALRC ESCs before that I had flashed and programmed without any trouble, so I was kinda confused when nothing populated upon hitting the Check button. If you're interested, I can email you screen shots of the error and the log.
Josh, I have to thank you. I was a little bummed when I saw your last reply directing me to the rcgroups forums. I had googled the snot out of my issue and didn't find anything really helpful so I doubted I was going to find anything more on rcgroups, but I went ahead and signed up for the forum. After a bit of searching, I found someone who had the exact same issue but with some DYS ESCs! Long story short, I hadn't thought about the flight controller firmware affecting the passthrough. I upgraded to the latest BetaFlight and BLHeli finally found my ESCs! Oh, but it couldn't have just been that simple... No, the 20 and 30A Lightning ESCs come with BLHeli 14.2 on them, but there was no Lightning when 14.2 was released, so in BLHeli Suite they show up as Emax Nano 20A, which have a different MCU (F33x vs the lightning's F39x). So I had to enable Expert Mode to enable the "ignore inappropriate MCU" checkbox and flash the new Lightning 20A Multi hex file. Emax sure turned heads with their race-spec motors, but heads will likely turn back the other way if they can't nail down their ESC game. Here's hoping the results are worth the effort...
I have a ZTW Spider 18A Lite BLHeli. Although it says blheli when i got it, its not working for me on both silabs and simonk. I kept getting "connection to esc failed". Any idea what are the options left for me to do?
All BLHeli_S ESCs support DSHOT in firmware. But some BLHeli_S ESCs need hardware modification to run DSHOT, especially DSHOT600. ruclips.net/video/EQJgh-o-uHo/видео.html
Will this work with the cc3d running librepilot? One of my motors spins faster than the other 3 and when I power the cc3d the esc's make the beeps at slightly different times :/
Joshua Bardwell I don't think anyone does tbh aha I can never find anything on the google search. Wish I didn't short my naze32 but the cc3d will do till I get a new one
Hi, why do you think that neither on chrome app nor at the windows 2 of my esc's are not listed but only no.3 & 4 esc's are listed so can be configured and updated. Btw all 4 work and can be accesed through betaflight...
It's definitely still in there. You're saying if you flash back to 2.7 it works, but if you flash to 2.9, it doesn't work, and nothing else has changed?
+Joshua Bardwell saying it use to work on this setup. since updating to new version the pass through done not work. It did before and nothing has else changed. the quad flies great. it isn't keeping me down but I kinda wish I could still do pass through to update the ESC firmware.
I have old emax 12a esc's that say 1-wire problem or something of the like. Should I just flash blheli to the x-rotor 20a I have and retire the old emax's?
Thanks Josh! I've benn having problems trying to calibrate the emax's after a goal post strike. I got the xrotors cheap and now have a programmer, so I guess it's time to retire my beginner esc's.
Bootloader is kind of intermediary between the serial wire and the MCU, which handles commands like read/write. If it somehow gets corrupted (e.g. while flashing) you can no longer access the MCU via servo wire, only via C2-interface for SiLabs and ISP for Atmel.
error message: intialization of serial 1wire passthrough failed. please check betaflight revision for support of serial 1wire passthrough. using naze32 rev6 running betaflight 3.0.0 with 20a littebees. would hate to unsolder my esc signal wires to flash usblinker
Hello! thank you for this video! I have these ecs's( www.hobbyking.com/en_us/afro-race-spec-mini-20amp-multi-rotor-speed-controller-with-bec.html ) when I connect with pass through, it tells me that there is another firmware on it and asks me if I want to flash with bheli firmware. If I click yes there are multiple options. I have seen videos on others putting bheli on 30a versions of my esc but I'm not sure if this is ok to do for my situation. the only reason I even searched or came across your video is because when doing an esc calibration in CF (one motor at a time) one of my motors only does a double beep(doot, doot) instead of the multi to confirm calibration. Can you help?
+Justin Mckenzie whatever you do, don't just flash a firmware to the ESC without confirming it is right. You can destroy the ESC and motor. Go to the BLHeli thread on rcgroups to see if you can flash blheli to the ESC's.
I just found that they can. But how do I know what version to use. The thread I found was kinda old. Also, being that its running BEC, do I need to remove the 1 red wire hooked up to the FC before I do the flash with this pass through method? The reason I ask is that I have seen when using the usb programmers, that's what you have to do. Thank you again for your time and answers to my noobieness! :D
+Justin Mckenzie you have to find somebody telling you what version to use. Ask on the BLHeli thread on rcgroups. If they have a linear BEC there is no harm in attaching all the red wires. If it is a switching BEC, only one wire should be attached. I think you need at least one wire attached to power the FC.
you turn the biggest headaches into nice simple to follow videos. great work man youve helped me and a lot of other people many times for sure

For those wondering if this will work with betaflight as well; Yes it does, just tried it myself. (SPRacingF3 with Betaflight 3.0.1)
had some problem until i used blheli32 version everything worked like a charm!
We need a video on betaflight 3.0 when you get time please josh! Lots of new configurable parameters in the new one and I'm lost! Dare say I'm not the only one either!

Hi. I am at 2:32 in the video, is a "bootloader" a piece of software or hardware. As SILABS C2 seems to be a USB piece of hardware?
Greatly appreciate your work.
Bootloader is software. C2 is a physical interface spec.

Hey Josh, I see the new BlheliSuite has SK bootkoader as an option, does that mean the requirements from your older video no longer stand? Can we use FC passthrough even to flash SK escs?
+Flyleap Studios SK bootloader yes, but not SK firmware. Only blheli firmware.
Joshua, the motors spin up almost immediately. I did put props on with same result. I'm waiting on a new board to see if that is it. BTW I'm using 4 in 1 harness, Omnibus has a port for this. Then soldering signal wires directly to ESC's.

Hello josh...What can I do if there is a u on my 3 and 4 esc...says not recognized or may have been erased...Thanks
You make the best videos very helpful!!!
Thank You, one mor question. What BLheli ESC do support Governor Mode? I want a cheap one!
Joshua you are a God. Thank you!
My pleasure! Happy flying.
Try the Chrome GUI instead. Also, try selecting just one ESC at a time in Suite, instead of all four.
Awesome video. This is my first drone and I got to flash my esc and only one come up, that is the master. Not really sure what to do. Should I just flash that one? Some time it will show another one and it will say erased or unknown firmware.
+Michael Race for whatever reason pass through is not working reliably on your setup. If the ESC's work, just leave them alone.
Needed this video.
Thanks for this video so clear and helpful.
Is PassThrough now dead with the new BLHeli configurator chrome app in your opinion josh? For someone only using betaflght I should add. Thanks 🙏
Joshua Bardwell always count on you for the accurate knowledge. Appreciate the response
hai joshua, my quad is shaking after upgrading the esc firmware.. do you know why?
The first answer I need, what ESC do support BLHeli Passthrough. Is there a list?
Every BLHeli ESC supports passthrough.
Josh,
They are adjusted, but not high. Thanks for your replies.
If the issue was pid-rleated, blackbox would show it.
I have got the stock Hobbywing 30a platinum (those are on the blheli compatibility list), am i able to program those with the betaflight/cleanflight serialpassthrough via the UART ports of my Flight controller ?
Or do i need a USB to FTDI adapter ?
Hobbywing ESCs don't run BLHeli do they? Some of them don't, anyway. In that case you can't program them with passthrough.
i learn so mutch from you!! my first buils. were i crasy op the motor. did what you say. and it fly.but got one say my blhelli´s is bad- its littlebee 30 a. but a have no problem f4 fc. :-D
Is there any disadvantage to wiring all 4 motors without crossing any wires, then setting direction through the passthrough?
There are a couple of ESCs that desync when you reverse direction via software. Other than that, no.
Joshua Bardwell Thanks so much! I've got the Rotorgeeks 20A ESCs which I understand are pretty solid. Your channel is fantastic!
Thanks, I checked and there is a BLHeli configurator for flashing ESC's for Mac in the App Store in Chrome!
Joshua,
Great video.
Joshua,
Thanks for the fast response! No they come up quickly, I did try putting props on and same result. Can't figure it out. Waiting for a second Omnibus FC to show up to see if board is bad.
Dan
My esc mamba f30 cannot connect with BLHeli_S. Do you have a solution?
Awesome Video! Very helpful, thank you!
Thx Joshua !!! u made may day one off my moters was running wrong direcion and thanks to your video problem solved and i lernt a lot more about esc Thank you buddy for ur wel explaint video !!!
Awesome!
Joshua, as far as I'm concerned SimonK bootloader is only supported on Atmel ESCs, SiLabs can have either no bootloader or BLHeli.
I think you might be right about that.
ok sorry if this is a dumb question but where do you download blheli suite from?
www.mediafire.com/folder/dx6kfaasyo24l/BLHeliSuite
thanks!
it worked you are the man! indeed i have learned something :)
Wow that’s exactly what I was trying to do today👍
Joshua, Is it possible to flash blheli to xrotor 20a using passthrough?
+Douglas Day no. Only via C2.
+Douglas Day ruclips.net/video/b-7VFt3IhhE/видео.html
Josh - Quick question. I am in the process of building a new quad and I want to be able to do BlHeli Pass-through and and I know that not all FCs support it. I also want to be able to do blackbox logging with the FC. I also want vBat and nothing less than F3. What FC would you recommend I consider? Thanks again and love your channel!
+SSBelmont Xracer f303. Really the Tornado is the only F3 that doesn't support pass through anymore. And KISS I guess.
Best place to purchase? Looks like fpvmodel is outside of the US. Would like to order within the US if possible.
Don't know of any U. S. resellers but I haven't really looked. Consider the MRM mantis if you want something domestic. Only does 4k but especially with Betaflight 3.0 that's less of a limitation than it used to be.
I just ordered one from www.droneeclipse.com/ out of Ohio
+SSBelmont awesome.
Great Channel Joshua! I'm getting an error when I try to initialize BLHeli which states, "Initialization of Flight Controller Denied! Please check all motors are stopped and disarmed" Any idea how to get around that?
+Craig Sosebee restart your computer. Power cycle the copter. Use blheli Chrome app and blhelisuite depending on which works.
WOW. I didn't even know Blheli Chrome existed. Installed it and it worked immediately. Thanks!!
hi Joshua.. one question do i need to have my motors connected because every time that i power my esc's my motors go crazy... and blheli dosnt reconize the esc's... i have naze 32 rev6 just bootloaded witth 14.3 version
Thank you.
The motors should not go crazy when you power the ESCs. Maybe there is something wrong with your signal wires or your flight controller?
Great help! Many thanks.
Thanks for the video. Do I need to remove the power wire from my ESC before hooking it to my computer and powering it with a battery? Thx
+P Tidona no you don't.
+Patrick Donovan live it to UART 2 or disconnect it. Maybe also can use softserial at 19.2 kBaud if you're short on UARTs.
Dood.....ur content is so helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Reversing motor direction via hardware or software. Resolder or click? By going the software route, are desync issues a major problem.
Desync with reversed motors is only a problem on a few ESCs. In general, it is fine. My normal procedure is to wire straight-through and then reverse in software. It's never been an issue so far.
Thanks! It's clear now. Keep the great videos coming.

Could you possibly unlock this mystery as I am about to give up :-)
If you do not have signal ground maybe that would help. I don't have a lot of experience with 6S so I can't really say more.
I always get unknwon firmware what should I Do?
Unreal that four years later I have to recur to your video. I'm trying to read BLHeli on my Revolt FC but I can't connect. Being a Revolt would this video apply? I
ve been trying to set the wizard on Flight One but the motors won't idle.
+Camshaft Shaft the latter. That's what that option is for.
+Joshua Bardwell thanks for the quick reply have a great day
Is not connecting to blheli suite? When plug the usb in it is not recognising is connected? Please help Josh is the last thing I need to do..
Have you selected interface "E"? Do you see the COM port of the flight controller in the pull down menu? If not, the drivers aren't installed correctly.
I probably won't see your response so email me directly of you need more help.
what is your email?
hello I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH the latest version of BLHelli and cleanflight they will not work together as described and after following your directions.
I have connected to blheli_32 suite, but its only detecting 3 of the 4 esc's. please help
I've checked to see that they all work, and they do. What is wrong?
+IIBennyMacII sorry, I don't know.
Use the Betaflight app to configure Betaflight.
Joshua Bardwell already flashed and fully set up with 3.2.1 all my motors are going wrong direction so I need to connect to BL 32 and change directions
Joshua Bardwell that’s what I’m having trouble with is connecting to BL 32 app
Joshua Bardwell solved my issue. I accidentally opened an older version of pas thru and once I opened 32 it was a piece of cake. Thanks for the videos and help!
Can I use this method for Pixhawk or Pixracer? It's really hassle to pull out all the ESC signal wires and hook up to a USB Linker. Thanks
That would require pixhawk to build in the passthrough feature. I don't know if they have done that.
Thanks. Sadly not seen anyone succeeded till now.
You are amazing! Thank you so so much!
Very glad it helped you!
Any idea? I'm at a loss man
It's because _S ESCs have different options. Damped light is always on for example. You can't turn it off. That's why the option isn't there.
So what other settings should i have on/off/set to with the options that I have available?
I mean, the _S options are the same as the regular options, just some of them are fixed or set automatically. Leave timing and demag at defaults. You could try adjusting endpoints according to my "maximum resolution ESC calibration" video.
does this work if flashed with betaflight
I tried it, it does work.
Will this process be the same for BLHeli_s ESC?
+Danel Igartua yes.
Thanks for your response. Love your channel. You're doing a great job!
will this work in the power cube? I have Vendetta
+romestar pretty sure it does pass through.
Thanks good to know, great vids. I am still noobish and saw your recent flip video, gonna try it this weekend.
were can I download blheli suite?
Seriously? It's literally the first google result when you search for "blhelisuite".
blhelisuite.wordpress.com/
This will not work with Raceflight, correct?
Raceflight manages the ESCs directly. There is no passthrough, but you can control the ESCs from within RF1 configurator app.
Any ideas??
Are you powering the ESCs before you hit "check"?
I sure am and they give the expected tri-tone greeting without the two longer tones. I had a set of DALRC ESCs before that I had flashed and programmed without any trouble, so I was kinda confused when nothing populated upon hitting the Check button. If you're interested, I can email you screen shots of the error and the log.
Better to submit to the BLHeli rcgroups thread. I'm not an expert at analyzing blheli logs.
Them are some hoops you had to jump through. Glad you got it sorted out though.
I have a ZTW Spider 18A Lite BLHeli. Although it says blheli when i got it, its not working for me on both silabs and simonk. I kept getting "connection to esc failed".
Any idea what are the options left for me to do?
+DimplePoji try Arduino 4w-if. C2 interface is the last resort.
+Joshua Bardwell i found the workarounds.. im using a clone fc.. flashed to betaflight and it worked!
hey man when i press check i get no info abt the escs whts the problem ?
Maybe you are using blhelisuite but your ESC's are blhelisuite32
i've just bought the DYS XM20A V2 BLHELI ONESHOT from Hobbyking, can i flash the DSHOT firmware on these ESCs using this method?
No. XM20 are BLHeli ESCs. Only BLHeli_S can run DSHOT.
Joshua Bardwell thanks for the quick reply!
Joshua Bardwell can all BLHeli_S Esc's support DSHOT?
All BLHeli_S ESCs support DSHOT in firmware. But some BLHeli_S ESCs need hardware modification to run DSHOT, especially DSHOT600.
ruclips.net/video/EQJgh-o-uHo/видео.html
I just bought betafpv fc 2-4s aio 12a, only found esc 2 and 3, esc 1 and 4 not found. What should i do? Cannot do anything on my whoop.
Contact the seller or BetaFPV for a fix, refund, or replacement. You shouldn't have to fool around trying to fix a BnF like this.
@@JoshuaBardwell already rise ticket issue to betafpv, no responds until now. Thanks btw.
How can I get it to recognize more than 4 esc? ESC 5, 6 is not showing up.
+Bona Fide they should just be there in my experience. Try manually selecting the ESC and reading just that one.
Will this work with the cc3d running librepilot? One of my motors spins faster than the other 3 and when I power the cc3d the esc's make the beeps at slightly different times :/
This is a feature of Betaflight. I don't know anything about Librepilot really.
Joshua Bardwell I don't think anyone does tbh aha I can never find anything on the google search. Wish I didn't short my naze32 but the cc3d will do till I get a new one
Do you also do networking videos? I swear you sound like the guy on my networking videos.
Which ones?
I can't remember exactly but I think it was one of the CCNA series that I watched when I was studying for my CCNA a few years back.
+VSUPARHAM no. I was the author of the CWNA study guide, 3rd edition though.
Hi, why do you think that neither on chrome app nor at the windows 2 of my esc's are not listed but only no.3 & 4 esc's are listed so can be configured and updated. Btw all 4 work and can be accesed through betaflight...
I don't know what is the cause of this issue. It happens sometimes... It could be an issue either in the FC or the ESC.
So passthrough was removed from betaflight versions newer than 2.7? I'm on 2.9 and it no longer works.
+Hungry Eyez if you flash back does it work?
I have old emax 12a esc's that say 1-wire problem or something of the like. Should I just flash blheli to the x-rotor 20a I have and retire the old emax's?
Xrotor 20A is almost guaranteed to be a much better ESC.
Thanks Josh! I've benn having problems trying to calibrate the emax's after a goal post strike. I got the xrotors cheap and now have a programmer, so I guess it's time to retire my beginner esc's.
Does the ESC need bootloader to do this? I have done it before, I'm just not sure what bootloader does...
Yes. It needs either the SimonK or BLHeli bootloader, but it must have a bootloader.
Thanks for the quick reply
Bootloader is kind of intermediary between the serial wire and the MCU, which handles commands like read/write. If it somehow gets corrupted (e.g. while flashing) you can no longer access the MCU via servo wire, only via C2-interface for SiLabs and ISP for Atmel.
How can I use BLHeli Passthrough if I am using Pixhawk?
I have no idea if PixHawk supports BLHeli passthrough. My assumption would be that it doesn't.
if bl heli doesnt read to of my dys ESC what do u think it is
Make sure you are using blhelisuite_32 for blheli_32 ESCs and regular blhelisuite for regular blheli_s ESCs. Confirm signal wires all connected?
im using blhelisuite_32 when i push read it only shows esc 2 and 3 1 and 4 just dont come up
error message: intialization of serial 1wire passthrough failed. please check betaflight revision for support of serial 1wire passthrough.
using naze32 rev6 running betaflight 3.0.0 with 20a littebees. would hate to unsolder my esc signal wires to flash usblinker
+aviah11 that combination should work. I can't offer much advice that isn't in my video though.
When I hit check i get an error no valid esc config? I’ve plugged this quad into bl heli before?
I think you are using the wrong configurator. Like you are using blhelisuite32 with blheli_s ESC's or vice versa.
Thanks nailed it... it worked with my other quad lol
Hello! thank you for this video!
Yes Joshua the man..!!
Futaba T14sg user here is there a need to change the ppm center throttle to 1520 in Blheli ore only a trottle stick callibration.
+Peter Hubregsen center throttle point only matters if you are doing 3D (reversible) ESC.
Ok thank's keep up your wonderful info and advice helps me a lot.
can someone post where to get this download for BLHEli? I cant seem to find it for mac. Is it just pc?
It's PC only. Use Parallels.
