And while strictly speaking *all* tips are supposed to be reported/claimed, it’s a safe bet that some of those cash tips are going unclaimed. Obviously, not every shift is going to have an average income of $40/hr. Several variables will apply. Grandma’s diner where the average order is pie and coffee? Those customers might tip well over 20%, but even 50% on an $8 tab is only $4. Some nights are busy, others are slow… some restaurants have expensive menus, others are very basic and affordable. The reality is that a good server can quite often make more per hour in tips than what most suggested fixed wage rates would be. And it’s that opportunity to earn more that keeps the really good servers coming back to work.

As a former waitress, the taxes don't come out of your tips. The taxes come out of your wages. You have to report a certain percentage of your tips, but you still have to pay the taxes on them and a lot of states only give you $2.13 an hour as a tipped employee. Instead of tip culture, which puts the emphasis on paying a living wage on the customers, put the emphasis on paying a living wage on the businesses.
I heard at red robin they start you out at 30-40 an hour plus tips if you combined that job with like a law job you'd be making some serious money so you'd have to be prepared to pay for stuff some of these jobs are actually designed for women without kids because they want you to work a variety of different shifts and deal with a lot of different people all day it's very dangerous work so being a homemaker mommy type wouldn't work for a mother maybe a kindergarten teacher or a nurse that works in pediatric but not all of these jobs favor mothers and that bothers the dads because they think there wives are so special they use them as trophies to prove there successful business men with a happy family that's the delusion conservatives live in bashing liberals and walling people in at the boarder that's why there party is not successful anymore they need to have a talk about removing trump from the race too so he doesn't get embarrassed and lose to a girl. A very young lady at a fast food restaurant I visit, beautiful lady, came up to me, tears in her eyes, and said, she said, Sir, these people are taking away all my tips. I said, how would you feel, pretty young lady, how would you feel if you didn't have a job. When you vote for me, this gorgeous fast food restaurant, with beautiful slides and statues with red noses, is going to be, it's going to be 100% automated. Young lady, she's so young and beautiful isn't she. They didn't make them like this when I was her age. Young lady, you won't have to worry about tips any longer. And I couldn't believe it. As a former waitress, office worker, and independent contractor with various jobs while in college, I always paid my taxes because I knew they paid SS to my grandparents and supported the government that served my community - even when I had to pay double FICA as an independent contractor. When I became disabled around age 40, SSA was there for me and my young son. It wasn't a lot, but it helped us eat and stay in our home until he was 18 and that's not nothing. What they should do, is lower the rate on FICA but raised the cutoff limit. $250,000 isn't what it used to be after all. So much waste ... yeah remember when he got rid of so many Inspectors General (whose main job is oversight that prevents waste and corruption) and when didn't fill vacancies i the FEC (Federal Elections Commission) you know the people who make sure elections are done legally and fairly - only they need a quorum to meet and there weren't enough members of the board to make a quorum? Destruction is the point.

That is how it works in your case. You didn’t get as much in your federal tax refund BECAUSE you got more money in your monthly paychecks. Because many tipped employees actually prefer the current model. If my husband and I go out to supper at even a modest restaurant such as Olive Garden or Outback Steakhouse… two entrees, perhaps a drink from the bar and a shared appetizer can quickly add up to $50-$60 dollars or more. Because we like to keep our tip arithmetic simple, we generally tip about 20%… give or take. Rounding up or down to the nearest whole dollar depending on quality of service and such.

The reality is that a good server can quite often make more per hour in tips than what most suggested fixed wage rates would be. And it’s that opportunity to earn more that keeps the really good servers coming back to work.

Thanks to Biden and Kamala, the stock market is only up 14% and is on the verge of a crash. Inflation is up 20%. Unemployment is up. There are fewer Americans working now than there was before the pandemic. Everything has become unaffordable and our country is entering a recession. You would have to be a 🐑 to believe otherwise.

As a former waitress, the taxes don't come out of your tips. The taxes come out of your wages. You have to report a certain percentage of your tips, but you still have to pay the taxes on them and a lot of states only give you $2.13 an hour as a tipped employee. Instead of tip culture, which puts the emphasis on paying a living wage on the customers, put the emphasis on paying a living wage on the businesses.
You are right. With a proper wage, nobody needs tips. Just like in EUROPE. Fight for a national minimum living wage.
I heard at red robin they start you out at 30-40 an hour plus tips if you combined that job with like a law job you'd be making some serious money so you'd have to be prepared to pay for stuff some of these jobs are actually designed for women without kids because they want you to work a variety of different shifts and deal with a lot of different people all day it's very dangerous work so being a homemaker mommy type wouldn't work for a mother maybe a kindergarten teacher or a nurse that works in pediatric but not all of these jobs favor mothers and that bothers the dads because they think there wives are so special they use them as trophies to prove there successful business men with a happy family that's the delusion conservatives live in bashing liberals and walling people in at the boarder that's why there party is not successful anymore they need to have a talk about removing trump from the race too so he doesn't get embarrassed and lose to a girl.

A very young lady at a fast food restaurant I visit, beautiful lady, came up to me, tears in her eyes, and said, she said, Sir, these people are taking away all my tips. I said, how would you feel, pretty young lady, how would you feel if you didn't have a job. When you vote for me, this gorgeous fast food restaurant, with beautiful slides and statues with red noses, is going to be, it's going to be 100% automated. Young lady, she's so young and beautiful isn't she. They didn't make them like this when I was her age. Young lady, you won't have to worry about tips any longer. And I couldn't believe it. I learned this all from talking to this one person. It was incredible.

As a former waitress, office worker, and independent contractor with various jobs while in college, I always paid my taxes because I knew they paid SS to my grandparents and supported the government that served my community - even when I had to pay double FICA as an independent contractor. When I became disabled around age 40, SSA was there for me and my young son. It wasn't a lot, but it helped us eat and stay in our home until he was 18 and that's not nothing.
What they should do, is lower the rate on FICA but raised the cutoff limit. $250,000 isn't what it used to be after all.
