YOLO is an early masterpiece, S-tier for me and always will be. It nails everything that I like about Band-Maid -- great melody, vocals, rhythms, song structure, counterpoint, etc.
They bring tears to my eyes all the time...of course I see 5 cute Japanese girls....but I see the dedication....the devotion....the drive....the sacrifice....the endless hours spent away from friends to hone their skills....the absolute heart on display in every video and every lyric....they are a treasure to be guarded....such a gift they are to us....and the fact that they feel the same about us....just too much to contain frankly....so it seeps out in tears of joy and pride for them....of course....what the he'll do I know.........
Technically their oldest song. Written by Kanami before she joined Band-Maid. She re-vamped it for the band. There is old footage of Kanami playing YOLO solo on piano. So far: 1. Alone 2. The creativity, composition and arrangement talent in this band is bloody jaw dropping, 5 musical unicorns and my oh my aren't we the lucky recipients, cheers 👍🍻
Your getting into the Band-Maid era that most of us Maidiac's have a number one that's at least 50 songs or more! Just so much excellence from Band-Maid!
Well, it might be that what you are after is that it's known that Kobato does not play her guitar parts on the recordings. For the longest time they've had the division of labor, for expediency if nothing else, that Kanami borrows Kobato's guitar and rig and lays down the rhythm guitar part herself. And then Kobato gets the task of getting up to scratch for the live performances.
Happy New Year, K-Ross. Good call on Kanami in this video. She's basically winding up and punching her strings in the lead up to her solo. I love this song, and it's kind of bittersweet because Saiki sounds so good kind of husky like this, but it's because of her vocal cord damage. She's still growing, and she sounds great and is more talented than ever, and I'm looking forward to everything they've still got ahead of them. With any luck, she won't sound like this ever again, but I miss it sometimes.
With the Yolo EP, you are solidly into the territory of the largest number of songs that will end up tied for first place. I love all three songs on that EP. By the time you start going through the "Just Bring It" album I will be curious to see how hard it becomes to rank them. I wonder if you will have to resort to using decimals for the top song... 1.00, 1.01, 1.001 🤔
Regarding guitar parts, Miku and Kanami talked about it fairly in-depth in an interview before Unseen World came out. If you're listening to a recording, Miku's not playing most of the time. Kanami writes and performs all the guitar parts, including borrowing Miku's Zemaitis guitars to record the rhythm parts. If it's live, then generally Miku's playing the rhythm parts. The only caveat for live shows is the recorded tracks they play with, which is usually more decorative technical bits but is sometimes an extra layer of rhythm guitar. Those parts on the recording would also be Kanami (just like all the synthesizers and other instruments Kanami has added in post production via her DAW, like the traditional Japanese instruments from the BAND-MAIKO stuff). Kanami is an absolute musical beast not just when playing her axe, but also in conceptualizing all this stuff.
This was an easy decision for you. You deserve a break here after the holidays. Your adoration for this song in particular, is quite evident in your facial expressions. Love your channel!
This song structurally is as simple and straight forward as it gets, but all the sections are as fancy and off the wall as it gets inside that structure. This song is a pound cake. The fanciest best tasting fekkin pound cake that has ever been baked.
Unbelievable song…Kanami had this song in her back pocket…just waiting to unleash it. This song was another piece of the amazing Band-Maid sound! Happy MAIDIT New Year…can’t wait to see what surprises we have in 2025! 🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
Great reaction as per usual thankyou,,This whole EP is a banger fest, with, Matchless Gum,and my personal fave,Unfair Game, which is one of many under appreciated BM golden nuggets.
Hope you have a great 2025! I think the second verse rarely gets the attention it deserves for how weird it is and how they were already making stuff like that work. If I'm needing the hardest rocking song out of the list, The Non-fiction Days is going to be higher... but... most days, yeah, Yolo beats it out as the more subtle and intricate song. Good call. Like 70soperator16 below, the reasons that I tear up are hard to quantify. But it's just... knowing that this sort of beauty exists in life. Pure joy that is far too much to contain.
Mate, great reaction, and you hit the nail on the head. YOLO is an absolute masterpiece of progressive hard rock. As much as I say I don't rank Band-Maid songs, this would be in my top ten if I had a top ten. Awesome hard rock goodness from our hard rock Goddesses!! 🤘🤘💕💕 EDIT: On the single release, the fourth song is an instrumental version of YOLO and the complexity of composition and musicianship is simply jaw-dropping!!
YOLO is Band Maid. It is a song like no other. I hear others say Band Maid is their own genre and YOLO exemplifies this. Thank you for another entry into an impossible journey. YOLO!!!
Yep, I can totally understand that some of their songs simply evoke feelings. No explanation possible or even necessary. ❤🔥🤘🏻 Happy New Year btw, and I wish you all the best for 2025! 🙋🏻♂ _____________________ 「 _"Our rock never dies ever. Forever!"_ 」 - ♬ *BAND-MAID* - 'Manners' ♬🕊️

When you get to matchless GUM, watch the LIVE (Studio Coast 2017) as a bonus, please! Saiki-san's performance is so unforgettable in my opinion.
YES! Also, still one of the best sounding live servings they recorded in my opinion. Studio Coast rocks!
Saiki in that performance is a heart health hazard lol.

YOLO -- You Only Listen Once, 🫨 and you've been Maid! 🎀😍🎀 Thx, Ross!
That strange ability they have over you is nothing to worry about. It's ubiquitous among Maidiacs.
Rest in peace green AddicTone. 😞

I think of the stage setup here as them playing in the wreckage after they 'Blew the roof off'! 🙂

The instrumental version, not with the band (B-side of the single), but with Kanami alone on the piano, is hard to beat in terms of beauty.

Ross if this had been your "Ultimate BAND-MAID make-up ranking" then Saiki would've also have gone straight to N°1 :)
That was an easy one
You are deep in Kanami's playground from here on out. Misa is writing her bass lines. Miku is writing the lyrics along with Saiki. Kanami is creating from here on out minus Smile. Your ranking won't be so easy now. Good luck my friend.
