Grahm Nesbitt I'm actually working on some games at the moment that need some tunes for them so I'm trying to learn about music creation in PICO-8. I'd really appreciate it if you checked them out at PixelCod (@Pixel_Cod): twitter.com/Pixel_Cod?s=09
I love this tune so much! Especially the part where is slows down to emphasis the bass, then the transition back into the melody, so well executed! Kinda blew my mind, lol.
To be fair, there are many other trackers and chiptune softwares that don't have such restrictions and are free. And the extreme restrictions Pico-8 imposes are forced to make you think creatively and find ways to make due with what you have.
I have a few questions, as I've been messing with this and there's somethings I still can't figure out. I know in other trackers you can make a note hold past the initial time it's played, how exactly do you do that in Pico-8? On that note, is there any way to make note duration shorter as well? Say I want to write eighth notes instead of quarter notes, how would I accomplish that?
Hey! Inputing the same note sequentially will string them together and make it sustain. If you want to make notes shorter it's just a matter of adjusting that amount and breaking the notes apart into smaller lengths, or you can use the staccato effect by entering the number 5 in the last column of the note editor. Also make sure your tempo is set correctly by adjusting the SPD value. Hope this helps!
I can just aimagine a screaming lead guitar playing that melody
This sounds fantastic, it’s sounds like something from a classic mega man game
From its lofty position at the highest known point on the Y axis, the mighty tower cast its ominous shadow over the awestruck denizens of Pico-8.
This is beyond impressive
Like your comics
Big fan of Pico-8 and chiptune and this is amazing!

I wish the sfx limit wasn't so restrictive

I've been messing about with P8s music editor. I'm such a noob. This is brilliant! Nice one.
Amazing Pico Pico!

aw i hope my leftover food isn't raw
the leftover food:
Fantastic, love it!
This sounds a lot more like PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 than Famicom/NES, but that's still 8-bit!
I was thinking something similar like that in another video. I found it similar sounding to the Namco WSG.
Yeah, it really sounds like there's much more frequency-variety, or more mHz, but there isn't
pisou nas minhas músicas
holy jeez, this is nice! I have trouble making songs with nearly this much depth, maybe it'd be easier taking advantages of the custom instruments?
@Krelez Check this out!

what did you use to capture the video?
Just used the screencap feature in QuickTime while running Soundflower so that it captures my desktop audio
How long did this take?
worked on it here and there for about a week
Who doesn't like this?
Hello, can use this for my game?
