@@Treenote no worries, I'm trying to make an effort to let all the artists I listen to know that I appreciate EMX tunes, as I've gotten older they have a certain feel and vibe to them that you don't get with other hardware synths, probably due to the fixed nature of certain sounds, but there is so much you can do with them still.
@@scampertoes Still, that's really nice of you! :) Yeah, they do have a certain sound to them. I'm never sure how to describe it. It's not really lofi, but it also doesn't sound super polished either, Mid-fi? Is that a thing? It's like it's digital but with a slightly dirty character. Have you tried other groove boxes from that time period? I think I remember you saying you got an ESX. I'm really intrigued to try a Yamaha Rs7000 but I've never seen one in person. It sounds really good in some of the videos I've watched.
@@Treenote ha yeah mid-fi probably describes it well. I did try one of those littler Yamahas, really wanted to do some lofi on it, but I ended up not having the time. Will have to check out some vids of the Yamaha Rs7000. I don't think I'll ever have time to learn any more hardware for some years. Gonna dabble with a polyend a little but that's the extent of my adventuring, always come back to EMX. I got the ESX, but it's sitting in another country until I go to pick it up for now.
have you considered the send/return sidechain loop for a part or two to prevent blowing out the mix? It sounds totally fine, but I haven't seen you use it yet. I actually love how thick it sounds here :) also, you have the original tubes in your EMX?
Good question! Do you mean using the individual outs to separate the kick or bass parts from the rest of the mix? I sometimes do this if I don’t want them to hit the fx (especially if I’m going to put a big reverb on the main out mix). For this track I was trying to hit the distortion effect as hard as possible so I ran everything into it. The kick really overloaded it and made that kind of sidechain pump feel in later part of the song. The kick does lose some definition with this approach though as it gets so compressed.
Now available on Bandcamp as part of my album 'memory': treenote.bandcamp.com/album/memory
This is so good, it’s great to hear the EMX-1 used in less conventional ways.
Thank you!
Loving this. I gotta bring my EMX out again!
Thank you! 😊
You should, your EMX tracks have been a big inspiration to me!
Epic! Gives me u-ziq vibes… In Pine Effect era… somewhere around there. Would fit in perfectly on an album.
Thanks Ryan! I’ve actually never listened to u-ziq. I’ve been meaning to though, maybe it’s time I check them out!
@@Treenote There are equal amount of awful and incredible tracks... so if you dig into him, just know I meant the incredible tracks.
@@ryanhursh6322 Thanks! Haha
I’ll keep that in mind when I listen. :)
furthering my understanding
