    The Hornady LNL Progressive press is a high volume progressive press. I hope this video helps. 76Highboy
    This video takes what we have learned and shows how to set the Hornady LNL AP press up from the ground up. I show you how I set everything up, going through each die, and ending up with a loaded cartridge. Thanks for watching.

    Jim - Watched all the Tips and Tricks vid for the Hornady LnL AP. Is this still your favorite press? I noticed you now have several other ones (I like that T7) but if you had to buy now, would this one still be 'the one'? Thanks

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  7 лет назад +1

      I no longer have the Hornady. After going Dillon I never went back. I prefer the Dillons and the T7. I would not purchase the Hornady again. Highboy

      Thanks for the reply. Any reason why? Just needed to mess with it too much or what? New to reloading, but also only shoot 200-300 a month, some times less. 9, .40 and .223, so when looking into it I knew I didnt want to spend too much to get started. After looking at single and turret presses, I happened across the LnL AP for $360 new, shipped and figured I'd check it out.

      76Highboy Reloading I was in the market for a dillon 550, but undecided now with the lnl. What's your take on both? Maybe a video comparison?

      @@76Highboy Lol - what?? Well that was unexpected! So I had the most difficult time with my Hornady LNL in the first few days setting up and getting to run but once that was sorted out which I had to purchase another press from local store and swap out all the defective parts than everything worked fine and I haven't had any problems. I think it's best suited for pistol rounds, especially 38 special because it doesn't spill powder. With 9mm I have to hold the plate while rotating and than comes to a sudden stop and spills the powder. I been planning to make some kind of damper as this is the biggest problem I am having with it. I saw that Dillon 650 has easy fix for it but I haven't seen any for Hornady. Someday I'll upgrade to Dillon 1050 but 2k is a lot of money to shell out when you don't shoot high volume.

    Thank you. You have really helped me. I went out and got the same set up as yours. I used your tips to get things working nicely. I have always thought my turret press from another manufacturer was the best. I was so wrong. This hornady ap press is so much more precise, doesnt eat primers or make them disappear down into the ram to reappear later chewed up, and absolutely no slop in this machine like my turret has with the crappy shell holders. Hornady has a big win with this press.

    Thank you very much. I have had two Hornady AP presses since 1999 and never got them working very well. I am making progress getting my AP to run better. I am teaching friends too. I believe your videos are the best encouragement I have found in my reloading hobby. I have found several things that have helped me a great deal from your videos. My compliments on your terrific attitude very much appreciated.

      76Highboy Reloading ok ran into a couple snags.
      1. After priming the ram seems to sit a hair low and the priming plug is now sitting in the shuttle so it is hard to advance.
      2. Can't seem to consistently eject. I made sure the shellplate is not loose, cleaned all powder up and still fails now and then.

    Just finished the part 5 and it's just as good as all the others. Very informative wrapping it all together. When I first started using the LNL without the benefit of having your video produced, I did mangle the depining rod so it's always been a concern for me on the first station setup. The best bit of information I have gotten from you beside the tips and hints in operation is letting the press provide feedback to me during operation letting me know I am not doing my part. Specifically, seating the primer. If I get lazy and don't seat if fully, as I begin to move to the next station, I can feel the primer starting to drag. I stop pulling on the handle and grab the shell plate and move it back onto station 2 and then reseat the primer. It might happen 1 or 2 times in a hundred. My techniqaue is improving. Another thing I have is looking at the priming rod (Stick) and wondering how many are left in the tube. I think I need to put a red band around the stick when it is at zero left in the tube, having the red band align with the black plastic tip. That would cut down on me not feeding a shell in and wating to be able to visually see if a primer is still there. I hate dragging powder all over the plate. I loaded 1200 rounds of 9MM iin 2 days taking it easy, and probably had a total of 4 rounds with primers. An improvemnt for me, but your tips and hints worked wonders for the shell plate and primer feed operations. Great job Bill. I would like to see a video on rifle cases done by you if you wouldn't mind. Thanks Ron

    Hello,
    I follow your videos with pleasure. They are clear and well done.
    I watched your videos on the Hornady Lock n Load AP press which taught me a lot.
    I noticed two things on my Hornady:
    1) when the shel plate is in the up position, the shel plate does not seat properly, I have to touch it a little to get it to seat,
    2) When I make a cartridge, the total length of the cartridge is correct, but when I run the cycle, making them one after the other, the length is not the same. The same thing happens when the last three are left, the length is also different.
    Have you noticed these two small problems?
    If so, were you able to solve them? And how?
    On your RUclips channel, the last videos don't show the Hornady anymore, but the Dyllon and the Redding press.
    You don't use the Hornady anymore?
    If not, why not?
    Thank you for your answer.

    Great Suggestion by Oneday8368...Also, if you could review some of the essential needs/tools for reloading (review of scales, tools, tumblers, etc.) I just got my LNL press, but I'm on a budget and just want to get started with what I need -- the nice-to-have's to could come later...

    Love your videos, I probably watched 20-30 hours worth before purchasing my LNL AP. The hints and tips helped immensely, especially the primer setup. I did have a question on H&T part5 about case mouth flaring. You say to expand the mouth by 1 thousandth, did you mean to say 10 thousandths? Measuring a difference of .001 with dial calipers is next to impossible. Please advise.

      0.001. 0.010 will kill the mouth of the case. Keep working with out and you will get it. Thanks for the question and enjoy your journey in reloading. Highboy

    Excellent demonstration. Your a pretty good teacher. I do have one question. If I am using a hornady seat/tamper die do I run a ram up with a shell in the plate and touch the shell with my die? I notice with the lee at a different station you ran the ram up without a shell and kissed the shell plate with the die rather than with a shell in it. . Is this done with a shell on hornady die and without on the lee??

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  2 года назад +3

      Put the case in the shell holder/ shell plate. Run the ram all the way up. Thread the die down until you barely touch the case mouth. Back the die out 1/4 turn. Back the seat stem out. Lower ram. Place bullet into case mouth and adjust seat stem seating the bullet to COL. Then, back seat stem out, tighten die body for desired crimp and tighten lock ring. Then, with ram in the upward position, lower the seat stem until it touches the bullet. Now tighten the seat stem lock ring. I hope that helps. Highboy

    Jim, I just thought of a suggestion. Regarding what you said at 21:15 about adjusting the powder down, how it compressed the powder. What about adjusting the measure when the shellplate is at the top, and the powder measure is in the dump phase? It seems like that would give you a chance to adjust the volume down with an empty rotor.

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  10 лет назад

      Give it a try. The goal is to get consistent powder throws. The way I instruct it works excellent but there really is no right or wrong just as long as you are getting consistent readings. I do not believe you will be any more consistent in the way you are describing but give it a try. Thanks for the great question. Highboy

      I'm still in the researching mode, and haven't bought an LNL AP or powder measure yet. I have the LNL BMG press that I want to get acquainted with by reloading 45ACP first and then 9mm before trying .223 and .308. I got the standard shell holder adapter for it. I don't use the BMG dies for a long time, I think.
      I'm gathering the equipment to use the single stage as I find things on sale like the Hornady beam scale, and was thinking a powder measure would be nice to use with the single stage. I found some deals for the LNL AP which of course comes with the powder measure, so I was just curious about the nuances such as the adjustment that I commented about.
      I wouldn't mind buying the LNL AP just to use the measure with the single stage until I get more experience. I'm a patient guy, and don't expect to need two powder measures necessarily.
      I'm still considering the Dillon XL650 and got a C&R FFL so I can get a little discount on one, but your LNL videos just impress me with how simple the press seems to be. I also prefer the Hornady powder measure design.
      Congrats on the 10k view milestone! That's fantastic, and it's a testament to how informative and entertaining your videos are. It's a great channel.

      WOW!!! The LNL BMG is a massive press and quality. You will never wear that press out. As far as Dillon vs. Hornady,,, they are both great presses and I will have a Dillon sooner or later. They are bull stout presses. Thanks for the comment. Highboy

    • @aznazguy
      @aznazguy 10 лет назад +1

      Bill Morgan Jim, do you have experience with the XL650? The price I can get one for is close enough to the Hornady, similarly equipped, that it seems to come down to design/features/preference. Since you mentioned sooner or later having a Dillon (assuming that's for your reloading equipment collector itch), if I were only going to buy one progressive do you consider tge Dillon to have any edge over the Hornady? I live close to Dillon and I know they seem to be the more popular at least online, but that's doesn't mean it's a better press to me.
      Things I like about tthe Hornady is the LNL bushings, the powder measure design, the overtravel linkage, and I believe the shell plate design might be better because the cases are supported by the subplate instead of the floating shell plate. It seems like it would be more consistent.
      I'm looking at a shipped price of $964 for the full ammo plant, but the sale is going to end tonight in a few hours so I may go for it.

    Hi 76Highboy Reloading, I’m thinking of buying a Hornady lock N Load Progressive Press to load 9mm ammo . I have a couple of thousand brass cases from different manufacturers all mixed together that I have resized over the past two years . My question is do I have to trim them all to the same length to be able to use them in a progressive press ? Some pistol reloaders that I’ve talked to say that it’s not necessary to trim them to the same length , other day that I should trim them all to the same length. I worry that I will not be able to get an even case flare when expanding the cases and of course crimping if the cases are of different lengths ( note differences of up to 0.005 in length between cases ) . Every video I have seen of reloaders setting up and using their progressive presses handloading 9mm pistol
    ammunition never mention anything about case trimming cases to all be of uniform length. Cheers 🍻 from Australia.

    1 question for you that you did touch base on in #5. I reload only 9mm and 45acp using Unique and only get this problem when doing 45's.
    There is a very fine ground up (crushed) powder leaking out of powder drop. I am using the pistol rotor like you said to do.
    Please help me figure this out as it really makes a mess.
    Thanks again

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  10 лет назад

      No, never. In fact IMO, the equipment is engineered in a way that you should never have that problem, at least hopefully never. I suppose here or there equipment can malfunction but in large the problem comes from mishandling the primers. It's our human error that gets in the way so I strongly urge safety glasses.

    I know you don't have the bullet feeder or bullet feeder die. I have that and this is my first time loading 9mm or even pistol rounds. In station 1 I have resizing/ decapping die station 2 I have the powder measure station 3 I have the powder cop station 4 I have the bullet seater die for 9 millimeter and in station 5 I have the seating die my question is does a nine millimeter need to have a Factory Crimp on it or even a crimp at all. I have loaded rifle bullets with a single stage press but never loaded any pistol round. I don't know if the bullet feeder die sets the bullet or not or if I need to crimp 9mm at all. this series of videos helped me so much in setting up my press I can't tell you thank you enough for making them. I never saw you remove the primers that should've fed during setup. For instance, at 12:25 there should be primers in the two slots in front of the case and the one behind the case. I never saw you reload the primer tube either. Did you just leave them in the shell plate and put a piece of brass over them which then allowed them to be seated later?

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  10 лет назад

      The primers only feed from one position. That is the only place the brass can be primed which has to be done on the down stroke of the ram. I hope I answered your question. Highboy

  • @Oneday8368
    @Oneday8368 11 лет назад

    Do you get seating depth variations when you don't have a round n both the seating die and the crimp die. I always have to set seating depth with shell plate full or it will be off .010. And this is with a shell plate that is not loose.

  • @joecat101
    @joecat101 10 лет назад

    On the LNL have you noticed any difference in the COL when running just one round thru the press compared to continuous loading? I found that after the seating die is set the COL changes when you start loading. The Hornady customer service told me it happens cause when setting the seating die there is no pressure on the opposing side of the sub plate with no case going into the sizing die, so you have to readjust the die after you start running continuous rounds thru. This did not happen when I had my projector press.

    • @76Highboy
      @76Highboy  10 лет назад +1

      I have a video where I verify my C.O.L. and all of the .357 magnum rounds are within +/- 0.003. I do notice a slight larger variation in C.O.L. when the shell plate is partially full verses totally full and it is not nearly enough for concern. However, it is enough to keep it from loading match grade ammunition.
      I am currently in the Women's Beginning Reloading series and I will be going through the Hornady, Dillon, and Redding in detail. I will show C.O.L. first hand and you will see what each press produces.
      You get an A+ for asking such a great question and I hope to see you follow along my friend.

    Jim, I hear you touch on the copper jacket being shaved off due to lack of expansion. I have this issue about 90% of the time when loading .223, more specifically into Speer nickel plated brass. I use RCBS sizing dies, I believe my case mouth measures .221? It's been a while.

    I am curious about your sudden switch from Red to Blue as well. Did Dillon come along and say hey we like your videos but how about we set you up with a square DB, 550 and 650. Do a unbox video on each and see if you have a need to do hints and tricks video. then by golly no need what so ever so you made the switch? Or did Hornady pull a sponsorship so you went blue? I stumbled on your " Truth about Dillon" video and now feel like I wasted my time watching the first 4 parts. Also do you have a similar set of Dillon vids. I've been reloading with Hornady presses for over 20 years now but I still like to watch instructional videos to pick up on tip's that the factory doesn't give you. I had a projector but I recently upgraded to the LNL progressive press and have been working out some bugs. I like your tip about adding a lock washer in for the shell plate mounting mine has come loose several times. You should check out InLineFabrication.com. The owner Dan Clausen has some very nice accessories to complement the reloading bench. I especially like his press lighting set ups, they are much better than hanging a flashlight from one of your dies. I have several of his products and really like them.

    Hello,
    I follow your videos with pleasure. They are clear and well done. I watched your videos on the Hornady Lock n Load AP press which taught me a lot.
    I noticed two things on my Hornady: 1) when the shel plate is in the up position, the shel plate does not seat properly, I have to touch it a little to get it to seat,
    2) When I make a cartridge, the total length of the cartridge is correct, but when I run the cycle, making them one after the other, the length is not the same.
