i used to warm my car up before setting off, but now just drive away immediately in winter. it takes ages to defrost the windscreen when just idling but with driving away the car starts defrosting it as soon as i get to the top of the street. its probably the difference in engine load helping heat the coolant faster.

This 10sp is a great transmission. Referring to it as a ‘lemon’ is taking a subset of examples and tainting a huge amount across a large range of cars.
Success, ‘I love my 10sp Ranger / Everest’ stories here don’t get the RUclips clicks I’m sure.

So the 2020 recall for the 10sp transmission here in Australia was made up yeah? The class action law suit in America is just a hoax right? The service bulletins sent to dealers by Ford itself were actually just fabrications by RUclips stars looking for attention in your world? If you have a 10sp Everest/ Ranger that you like and hasn't given you any issues, sincerely good for you.. that doesn't make this very large "subset of examples" any less real. Good advice Auto Expert. Feeling inferior as my Cherokee only has 9 speeds in its gearbox as opposed to the big 10 at Ford. Shift quality in the Cherokee is ok but pales in comparison to a Porsche PDK dual clutch. Its been said that the Cherokee's ZF gearbox is mechanically quite good but is let down somewhat by the software controlling the whole AI. At any rate I wholly agree that 8, 9 and 10 speeds are largely irrelevant for Australia Driving conditions. The Boxster's 7 speed PDK seems to operate just fine on 7. Having owned two Fords I'd comment, yes drive them like you stole them and whatever you do dispose of them at no later than 6 years or 120,000km. The do have a tendency to break things randomly and frequently after this time.

Prado 4 speed auto 90 series Diesel did the same thing. Held gears a bit longer when cold. It's basically so it can warm up quicker. Ecu may have limited throttle too as she was a bit of a slug when cold (fractionally better when hot). Prado 150, 5 speed A750 Diesel tends to not be as noticeable, i think it still holds the gears a bit, but overall the engine is noiser when cold, that may be what I noticed & thought that was higher revs on drive off when it just the noise of a cold engine.

Check out "Custom Car Coding". They retune remap the ford ranger/ Everest/mustang 6 speed 10speed transmission TCM to fix the terrible shift points and stop the hunting and flaring.
My mechanic recomends to change transmission oil and filter every 50,000km if towing and every 100,000km if not towing. .
Replacing the trans thermostat with an aftermarket valve that lets the oil flow 100% of the time stops the over heating dramatically. Adding a transmission cooler up front also works very well.
The 6 and 10 speed transmissions are good for 800rwhp some people pushing 1000rwhp through them with out troubles.
    Supercharged mustangs go very well.

I would prefer a solid 5/6 speed automatic rather than a infinitely shifting gearbox waiting to end its own life from being overworked. I know technology has come a long way but like you stated the engines these days also have good power, great torque output throughout the rev range. Seems like they just do what they please with left overs and cross their fingers it works to save costs...

Just to enlighten you I found the actual reprograming procedure for the 10 speed transmission, it has an electronic module which honestly could be better, aside from that the module requires a tedious process done 6 times. The reason for this is the module has a limited band width concerning engine power and torque. Carrying out this processes apparently tunes the transmission to work correctly with the engine. I have not done this or needed to but a work mate had a dyno tune and as he called it a minor ecu remap and was really crap on gear changes, after he carried out this procedure his car changes better than it had before his tune up. You may have heard of the fairytale of the 10 speed being a learning system well that is just BS.

quite the opposite actually. small engines have narrow powerbands so having a 10 speed allows the engine to stay in that powerband no matter the road speed or load. this means better fuel consumption and a smootger ride as the engine isn't trying so hard whereas a big engine has a massive spread of torque so the engine is never really working that hard and you can get away with less gears

Pre that absolutely perfect, smooth, quiet. Since then at gear change, under load, constant speed - e.g 20kph, 50kph, 100kph, etc - a 'vibration/noise' has comes into play. Been in dealer, replaced engine mounts, softened the noise a bit, but is still there. The 'transmission been reset' and told to drive to 'train' it. Been there done that. Same issue. Now days if not months go by and we have the same scenario where they take off like the wind in a hurricane but this time the engine doesn't sound so good and the transmission doesn't change that well, no knowing a little about cars opened my eyes a lot when I read about "testing Australia wide" in all conditions, had to laugh a little here is as when you see a 4wd driven through a creek we never see the back up crew ready to fix the breakdown of that vehicle, this I know as they "the car companies" never send out one vehicle on it's own to be tested. When people go out to buy a new vehicle they never ask for evidence of how durable that vehicle is, all they ever ask is the trade value on their vehicle and how much they'll pay. I used to sell cars and trucks in the 90's and it was hard, luckily I did my homework and made sure I knew what I was selling, I can't say the same these days.
