It's the NZ Maori geneology of creation from the very beginning. In the beginning there was the nothing, from the nothing(te kore) there was darkness (te po) and from darkness there was light through the separation of Ranginui and Papatuānuku. Ranginui is the Sky Father, Papatuānuku is the Earth Mother and from there came Tangata Maori (mankind/Maori people). This is not the literal translation just the jist of what it is singing about. Ko tenei te timatanga o Te ao (This is how the world began).
