    The biggest names in drumming today got their start in Gospel Music. Don't make me name them! It would take all year. Gospel drummers are the cleanest, most musical and creative in the business. The skill required enables them to cross over and shine in all other styles. The kids who play in today's churches have more musicality and better sound then most drummers in other genres. Plus most of them use single pedal. Y'all better recognize. Show some respect!!!

      Indeed

    • @whitrulzes
      @whitrulzes 10 лет назад +7

      Absolutely. Fantastic players. Although as Questlove pointed out, the only downside is a lot if them are too flashy when they should be playing the pocket. Larnell Lewis is fantastic though. He had an odd ability to sound really busy yet not step on anyone's toes.

    • @deans4978
      @deans4978 10 лет назад +3

      What ridiculous statements. Gospel is largely an American thing. So you are inferring that all the biggest best are American. Not likely. Gospel came from Blues and Jazz, so one would be more inclined to think that the ppl who inspired the Gospel artists are the better musicians. What you are really saying is you like Gospel. Which is fine, but to suggest they are the best is very narrow minded. It's like saying all the best musicians play classical music. Sure, there are many amazingly talented classical musicians, yet they are just another piece in the whole scheme of things. Having an appreciation of different types of music and players of different instruments and hours and hours of practice make the best musicians, not one form of anything.

    • @johnathanfoster852
      @johnathanfoster852 10 лет назад +2

      I stand by what I said. Just because you can't grasp the concept does not make it wrong. I like and listen to all styles of music myself and I study them all. I never said Gospel is the best music. I did say, "Because Gospel music requires the skills to play ALL other genres, that makes Gospel musicians (drummers) the best in the industry. You don't have to agree but the proof is in the "pit" Put a Gospel drummer in ANY other genre and he will flourish. Do that with a drummer from any other single genre and 99% would drown.

    • @trevorearis7512
      @trevorearis7512 9 лет назад

      I can identify with you there. Most of the drummers I listen to use triggers in their drums to help them. partly because they play so fast (too fast that it loses the real fell) but we will never no how good they are unless you take the triggers away and tell them to play the same way with a band. Some of the veterans like Nicholas Barker and Danny Herrera might surprise you and will be just as good without triggers as with. Thomas Haake also will just blow your mind and I'm 99% he never uses triggers and I'm pretty sure Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the drummers he gets inspiration from.

    Larnell Lewis: How have I never heard of you before?! What a musician! Love your elongated fills and tasty (for lack of better word) handling of ghosting and syncopated beats on the HH's and snare. Cymbal work/choice of which to hit when, etc... is on point. Brilliant stuff! Totally changed the game for me and my approach moving forward. Funny how the best drummers don't have 1,000,000 views... I can also tell that you are a very trained musician, from hearing you speak about mm.'s, beat #'s, etc... Go on head wit' yo bad self!!! Drumeo: thanks for sharing this amazing musician and putting together this YT clinic. I'll defintely be following for more.

    His intelligence, attitude, energy, skill, practice, and style are all 10/10. Im not sure if its this vid or another, but its the same host and he recalls meeting Larnell at an event:
    Host: "So, where do you see yourself going as a drummer?"
    Larnell: "I am going to be playing for Snarky Puppy"
    Larnell in several months is the drummer for Snarky Puppy.
    Just speaks to his vision, dedication, talent, and follow through. What a boss! Larnell! You are the Steph Curry to Michael Jordan. Thank you for showing us that enjoying the sport, and being dedicated are enough to make it to the top and are really what its all about. Showing us that you can have a good attitude and be a happy/nice person and still be arguably one of the greatest drummers of our time. Love watching that smile while you play and hearing you succinctly describe your modality without overly technical verbiage. Dude! I look up to you as a human being and a drummer.

    While gospel drumming is certainly not my favorite style, I'll be damned if every gospel drummer didn't have the best cymbals/cymbal technique in the world. I jizzed myself hearing the ride, and when I was wiping off the screen he threw in some of the nicest crashes I've heard, and while I was changing my pants he put the nicest hi hat barks ever, like he kills it on that hat, and that just put me to the point of actually typing a comment and buying new carpet.

    That is some inspirational drumming. I'm more of a Metal drummer myself, Sludge and Deathmetal but I'm open minded. I love fusion and the Gospel style of playing. It's so fluid with fine detail and a little off kilter. I have to say the drum solo where he is put on the spot was just mind blowing. That's one of the reasons I love The Dave Matthews Band and Carter Beauford. He almost mixes some Metal style in his playing without it sounding out of place and his Hi-Hat work makes me melt. Just awesome. But back Larnell Lewis, I will definitely be checking more of his work out. Any recommendations?

      @trevorearis7512 2 года назад

      @@MarysDressSways Yes I did actually. I will admit it is quite a straight forward song and once you know that formula you should be able to get it right. There are loads of those off beat snare and cymbal hits that could throw a lit of drummers off.
      I'm not taking away how good he is though at listening to a song once and on only the 2nd attempt, pretty much nailing it.

      Sput had some problems with his passport at the time of the recording. So they called up Larnell and he did the album. Sput's their main drummer

      Snarky Puppy has three drummers, Robert 'Sput' Searight being the main one and Larnell Lewis and Jason 'JT' Thomas acting as subs for when Sput can't play. Which is quite often as Sput is Incredibly busy playing on and producing other artists records! He also has two of his own bands, Ghost-Note and RSVP outside of Snarky Puppy!

I tend to agree with people when they show me his older stuff but i'm on a different wavelength if you also have that feeling with his later stuff. Opinions are different of course.

    He was incredible, but where is the obligatory, "Sloppy, sloppy, s*** drummer!!!!! #$*#&%!" comment? For real, though, the cleanest, most controlled, most crisp drummers I've ever heard have been in Gospel R&B. A very different skill set, requiring both serious chops and great restraint.

    HOW GREAT THAT DRUMEO PUTS ALL THESE VIDEOS UP FOR FREE SO WE DONT HAVE TO SUPPORT THE DRUMMERS OR THE COMPANY. I HAVE ALSO STOPPED TAKEN DRUM LESSONS AND SUPPORTING MY LOCAL TEACHERS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY FREE VIDEOS. I AM HOPING THAT I CAN FIND ALL THE ARTISTS/DRUMMERS MUSIC ONLINE FOR FREE SO I DONT HAVE TO SUPPORT THEM EITHER...

      I am sensing a bit of sarcasm and frustration in your comment. Serious question: Did you hold shift down while you typed all of that? Or did you commit and just use caps lock the whole time?

    • @robinhood1072
      @robinhood1072 10 лет назад

      Would it make it easier for you to actually address the issue if the cap locks were off or would there be another insignificant point to illuminate. Might serve you and ... music, artists, the industry as a whole to consider the point I made.. Do you actually see the impact of your choices?

      Why would these musicians participate if these resources were so detrimental to their popularity, income, etc? I've actually discovered a lot of drummers I'm now a fan of (Larnell included) through Drumeo/the internet in general and have since gone to see them live when possible, purchased their albums/DVDs, etc. I think this resource is good for drumming overall if not only because it provides more avenues and content for people to get involved/stay involved/ to learn/to be inspired.
      They also have a subscription option on drumeo.com if not being able to give your money to someone is that big of an issue for you. Hell, I'm accepting donations.

      Also, if you go to Meinl cymbals' youtube channel, they put out lots of videos featuring artists, same with DW, Vic Firth, etc. I'm sure Yamaha doesn't mind having their stuff seen in these videos, if you read some of these comments, people are curious about the equipment being used, probably because they'd like to purchase it for themselves. If companies don't want their products represented in various broadcasts, they can send a cease and desist and usually their logos get blurred out.

      Really? For some of us who live outside of the US or other countries with big music industries drumeo provides a great opportunity to learn from musicians that are on a completely different level to the pros in my country. I still support local teachers, personal feedback from a teacher is invaluable but there are also things that they can't teach me and that's what this is all about: where else would you be able to take a lesson with the Larnells and Tony Royster Jnrs?
      When did this negativity invade the drumming community! I say welldone and thankyou to drumeo... Keep up the awesome work!

    • @Mrmisterdonut
      @Mrmisterdonut 10 лет назад

      Nathaniel Smith well a metronome is a device you can pickup at any music store or online, I use a Dr beat. You can even download an app to your smartphone if you have one. The metronome is a device that gives perfect time at almost any tempo. It is a MANDATORY little gadget if you are serious about playing drums

    • @themoaspecial
      @themoaspecial 10 лет назад +2

      Mrmisterdonut
      I think what Nathaniel was trying to say is that just simply playing in time to a metronome is not necessarily going to give you good feel, pocket and groove like Larnell Lewis. Maybe allow you to play in time but not with the other things I just mentioned therefore, when you replied in a Smart Alec sort of way "it's called a metronome" it really wasn't helpful. Do you understand?
      You know what though Nathaniel, I checked out your videos and you're a great drummer!
