Amazing that the Heron was able to get that fish down, thought he bit off more than he could swallow, should be enough food to last that bird for a few days. One sure learns how nature's birds and animals feed themselves on You Tube, enjoyed your video Mark.
Was lucky enough to witness this today at a bird sanctuary and hiking spot near us in upstate NY. Watched the Heron for about 20 minutes and he consumed 2 fish this size and a smaller one...I was surprised it ate that much! Awesome to see.
@@archiearchiball3392hope you don't mind being reborn as a heron. If you think about eating fish a lot, and appreciate herons, there is a chance you will think about a heron at the time of your death. The next life will be in the womb of a heron. You will enjoy your next life eating only fish. Though a heron has other suffering too. Is it ok for you? One who dies must be reborn, unless you want to be liberated from all suffering and (so called) happiness.
Another great video - superb quality, subject and camera work. Note to fish design department "in future make all dorsal fins fold forwards - just to annoy the herons"
Prescott, AZ, Lynx Lake has several blue herons. They eat small catfish. Does anyone know if there is a small, red-legged ibis with black eyemask and hood with blue-black wings, white breast and long beak and legs? We saw 9 of these yesterday flying as a group over the lake. Almost thought they were sandpipers. Beautiful!
Hello! Thanks for your videos! Sometimes you want to photograph a bird sitting on a tall tree. Some people advise buying a used camera with a removable lens and buying a lens with a large optical zoom, while others say that you can save money and buy an adapter for binoculars or a monocular for your smartphone. What do you advise?
I'm seriously jealous because I've been trying to get that shot all summer. And you did it beautifully. You zoomed in and out without a hitch (using a remote, I guess) and all of it was crisp and clear. Great job. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it happen and especially liked the closeup of the fish with its head in his throat. The fish was immobile until the heron put it down, and then it started flopping, only to stop as soon as he picked it up. I wonder why the fish behave that way.
Amazing how without hands, he was able to do this. I think of myself trying to eat with my hands tied behind my back and it would be very difficult. I know that the heron has evolved as a species to do this, but it is still remarkle, especially since the fish is so large and it has all of those spinny fins.
@@Exodus20.7KJV They probably ate something else, maybe smaller, easier to swallow fish. The ones that could swallow larger fish were more likely to survive and reproduce, so eventually they took over.
What a beautiful bird! Thank you for sharing this amazing video! We don't have great blue herons in Russia, unfortunatelly. We have here the grey herons. They are good fishers too but they definitely can't swallow such a big fish! :)
Tyrannosaurus rex=crushes flesh and bone with its teeth Allosaurus fragilis=uses its teeth like axes to kill its prey Velociraptor mongoliensis=pins down its prey with its claws and eats them alive Spinosaurus aegyptiacus=waits patiently for fish to come to it and senses them with its nose Ardea herodias=stabs things with its face I think we have a winner XD
Lived near the Coweeman and Columbia Rivers on the Oregon-Washington border for a number of years. Saw a lot of herons but never saw one eating. That was remarkable to see (and I really miss living near the Columbia).
actually pterosaurs had fuzz on them not exactly feathers though and they were completely reptiles and way different the only similar thing with birds is the beak
Believe it or not, I actually searched for this.
I believe you 100 percent! I did the same thing. :)

They are magnificent birds. I see them around where I live in a suburb of Philadelphia in the summer time.
Would you like to be reborn as one?
Feels amazing to see the Blue Heron and fish! 😊😊😊

I like the way he took a sip of water to wash that enormous fish down.
i like it that they don't waste any part of the fish. They eat them in whole. WOW.
Why would anyone dislike this? They're such wonderful birds.
iim havin a fish sandwich as we speak😁

Thank you for combining your excellent film and photo. You also used soothing music

Very nice, Mark. Good study here on the Great Blue heron feeding.
Thanks!
Great video, without annoying music or humans saying "OMG! OMG! all through the video. Well done!

It was most likely a black - capped kingfisher

Fun fact:owls are nocturnal which means they sleep in the day
How did they do this before they 'evolved'? 🤔

Wow!
I didn't think he would be able to eat that fish whole!
I was expecting him to somehow break it into pieces.
That was amazing!

Wow! How did you capture this, great job, (on the heron most of all).
How would you like your Crappie, sir? ... "Still wiggling."
I wonder how long till he eats again....

Great job , enjoyed watching.

Do you know how much "digesting" happens on the way down? Did he then take a l-o-n-g nap? Really enjoyed watching this, thanks!
I think it gets in the stomach pretty fast. Thanks for watching!

Just came here from a Russian video showing a heron catching and swallowing a catfish twice the size of that tilapia!

Great footage
As Capt. Quint said in Jaws, "A little shakin, a little tenderizin, and down you go."
How are the kids doing today I hope you are feeling better the birds are singing in you and I know okay
Great film
Unbelivle! So big big fish!
Great video! I'm guessing that fish has no chance of swimming back up if gulped down in that condition?
Using this image to write a poem- thank you !
People don't feel bad when a heron eats a fish. But eat a little duckling? MURDERERS! LOL.
The savagery of the great white pelican! Eating pigeons whole? No salt, no pepper, raw uncooked, while alive? Wow
How does the heron spit out the fish bones?
+v yang They dissolve in the stomach from the acid in it.
🤮
The biggest challenge is not how to catch a fish, but is how to eat that fish.
Is the fish still alive in 4:02 , or is it just the wind?
What a big fish !👏
A heron eat this , a heron eat that,... dude these guys are insatiable
Where is the place ?i can't believe my eyes...
Great Blue Heron gets a fish. I got the very first strike! #birds #birdloversworldwide #birds4all #birding #nature #wildlife
That seemed like it took a long Time for the Bird to swallow that fish. And it seemed like he didn't know what to do with the fish:-\

that's so weird... i didn't know herons become squeak toy ventriloquists after swallowing fish !! I guess you do learn something everyday ! :)
where was thats?
Part 2 is an alligator eating the bird. And so is life.
Nice video
is it getting digested in the throat itself !!

Cleaning and dressing a fish before eating is overrated.
GB Herons would hunt humans if they were ten times bigger.
Wow, very impressive.
Nice 'catch'!

I love fresh fish too.
Is there anyone who wasn't secretly routing for the fish?

Birds are like snakes in that they can dislocate their jaw in order to swallow large items. Birds have little choice since they lack teeth.
Most fish eating birds have teeth...
I’m so glad they aren’t bigger than humans. These birds eat anything they can fit in their mouths.
Nice, thanks

the fins of this fishes are sharp.. does their throats do not get grazed or scratched by this💀😭
