Shift is the most detailed mainly because it has an actual first person camera (they did a great job anyway). Really impressive Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted 2012

@@catmeme89 Black Box used outdated textures and on Frostbite they got distorted, that's why. And since they focused on the protagonist during the cutscenes, they didn't care much about the interior because for how much you'll stop to look him closer?
Also weirdly NFS MW 2012 and The Run have the same hands put like the left on 10 o' clock and the other on 3 o' clock.
Yeah and also police model in payback and heat look really good and really detailed and i like how in Payback and heat you can see the race car drivers

One cool thing to note in Heat is that if you're using any mode like UNITE for instance, for some reason, they break the player model in the car. So like if you see them sitting in the driver's seat, they'll have their arms and legs broken and bent in abnormal directions. Not sure if that's the same case for Heat's player models too
On Hot Pursuit 2 (2002) character is well visible (as for 2002) and even there is animation for gear changing. I think it is worth noticing in movie of this kind.
That one was really cool and the model could be changed to a female if I'm not mistaking?.
Another NFS with driver model was NFS 4 and in NFS you'll se it steer and shift.

@@supertaba10 yes, you could change the gender, and the animations were basically perfect for 2002, they both moved the steering wheel when turning, shifted gears and looked behind when the player pressed the button to look behind, way ahead of its time NFS HP2

You forgot to mention that in MW 2012, the drivers plays a little animation when busted. Also, in rivals, when you're in cop career, the racer changes to a cop.
NFS Most Wanted 2012 and Rivals are impressive it's time. I still love the game.

I like the Payback protagonists the best detailed so far. 😊
The character detail really depends from the needs, in SHIFT for example they fully modeled the character and added complex animations because you actually drive in frist person, in some other titles there are cars without roof and the characters needed to be beliveable, in some other titles the characters are important for the plot so they need to be fully rendered and good looking but for optimization less geometry and texture resolution is better so don't expect for future titles to have good looking characters if it's no needed.
High stakes and Porsche 2000 has good animations and you can drive on any camera you want. :v

Black Box is known for their recycling old textures from previous NFS. However the Frostbite engine distorted the character.

This is the result when you port outdated textures to a newer engine. They focused more on the cutscenes and the environment compared to the small textures of the cars and the drivers because they knew the cockpit wouldn't be used either way.

Why didn't you included Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2)? The main characters have better details. They will look at the opponents or cops if you hold a button that will change camera which I forgot which one was it. And it was probably the first NFS game that can change their genders in the player options menu.

This model was basically re-used from NFS MW 2012 cop model. And in NFS Payback, Heat, Unbound they used the same models but only for the NPC drivers. I mean even the cops in 2015 use the same model but with sunglasses and a cop outfit.

MW05 Is no miracle that exists on PS2 at all. Is just a downgraded port of the X360. Each port however had a different artist taking their spin on visuals.
You say a completely static driver model is "not bad for 2005", but "Need for Speed: High Stakes" (for PC) had a driver model back in 1999 - and it actually moved its hands to steer! Not sure about the gearbox, tho - I always used automatic in that one.
NFS HP2 had a shifting animation as well and I think Porsche Unleshed too.

He may look like a knock off Barbie Ken doll, but we can't deny that the Racer in Hot Pursuit 2010 still had amazing detail, especially when you compare him to other NFS games at the time.
Same goes for the Cop model. Compared to Unbound's Cop model, Hot Pursuit's Cop looks fantastic, and quite good looking tbh lol

I think modern NFS games should've taken the NFSMW and Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition Remix simple first person camera instead of creating the character. Those resources could've went to improving the games

I didn't know NFS had a main character.
It's mostly just someone that represents the player. But Rivals, Payback and Heat has a very "character centered" story where you are not just the "player" your character is an actual person in that world and even has a voice of their own! F-8(Rivals cop player) talks a lot btw. "I've got a 10-44 here, code 3 pursuit"
