  • 1990 Ford Mustang Fox body 5.0 LX convertible with stock exhaust headers gets a new set of ‪@bbkperformance‬ 1 5/8" unequal length titanium ceramic coated exhaust headers. We find out if the aftermarket exhaust headers are any louder than the Ford OEM exhaust headers on this small block Windsor 302.

    Name brand doesn't always mean quality. I'm glad I put on the lmr econo stainless steel headers and just at a glimps mine where made on a Monday.

    Leave it to bbk to drop the ball lol, but I usually prefer to use bolts instead of studs, makes installation and disassembly easier imo. I actually took the time to clean up the welds on my set of headers last summer, gave it a more crisp exhaust note , also seemed to rev better, definitely glad I did it.

    BBK ceramic on mne..I was worried ...but the OEM blots on my 89 5.0 came out easy.. BBK H-pipe and no cats.. what a sound upgrade.. Flow Master American Thunder SS the rest of the way...Minus all the smog items...

    Great video Gary!! Crazy how one of them didnt come threaded!! I changed mine on my 94 about 3 months ago they stock headers as well. I had a really bad header leak and when I removed the passenger side header one of thw header pipes had a huge crack hanging on to dear life!! Lol always a great upgrade 👌

    Wish I would’ve seen this video a few months ago before I bought my ceramic unequal shorties, Makes me want to sell them and get a pair of equal length instead

      No practical difference in power below 5500 rpm. You're not driving a dyno.

    Only gaskets we use at the shop i work at boss swears by them and I can confirm they work.

    BBKs quality has really dropped off, I ordered a BBK cold air intake from LMR that came pre rusted with the powder coat peeling off, LMR gave me a refund and checked their inventory to find all of their BBK intakes rusted 🙃
    (Definitely will not buy anything BBK in the future)

    Really nice lx vert notch I always liked the luggage rack more then the little wing adds way more nostalgia to the car plus they look more boxy if that’s a word lol…

    Great video Brother! The sound comparison was cool. The BBK's are louder. However I must say that I am shocked about the BBK headers and what I would consider poor quality! Hopefully you were able to smooth things out with the wife when you got home from a late night at the shop!😰💯👊🏾

    From what I heard it might be the EGR sensor and valve but it ain’t throwing the check engine light ether

    I always spend a bit more for me. Gasket copper header gaskets they just don't leak and can be reused. I was sold when I had a SBC with headman long tubes and I had a broke off bolt and they didn't leak that's unheard of. It even had a small exhaust leak until it got warm it sealed up and never leaked again and I reused them several times with no leaks. Also the air flow guru David vizard said equal length headers are not actually better because each cylinder has a different location and distance so they want a certain lengths, obviously each one needs to be tuned vs random lengths for fitment but most don't have the equipment or know how to tune primary's. Personally I think the best option for exhaust for fitment custom fit and expense is to just buy a builders kit and build your own there under $100 and you could build a high dollar exhaust for pennies on the dollar... It's just most don't even consider it but with some basic tools like grinder with cut off wheel and a welder (obviously a chop saw is waaaay more ideal) and fabrication ability it's easily doable it's just more time consuming but end result is well worth the time and effort. And there's some serious self gratification and respect from others that would come from building a nice compleat custom exhaust because Anyone can spend $500 and up for a bolt on exhaust and it is what it is.

    I went with the BBK long tube headers and x pipe with flow fx mufflers on my 91 lx. It took forever to get the stuff from BBK, but it was the height of th pandemic when I was trying to order stuff and do my build. There were no quality issues, though. The combination gives my car a subtle but aggressive sound. I really like the flowmaster flow fx mufflers. They don't drone your brain out at highway speeds, but sound great when I get on it. Also, because they are not the typical chambered flowmasters, they do not have that fart in a tin can sound.

      My experience is that they cost a BUNCH of power. Our shop replaces FM for customers, some have less than 500 miles on them. Most everybody hates them. We just toss em. 🙄😎

      @@hotrodray6802 I remember the first traditional flomasters I bought years ago, they were fun for about 5 minutes, that is when the migraine set in from the constant drone. I have to give credit to Flowmaster now for getting away from the chambered design with the FX series, I love them.

    I spent hours cleaning up the ports on a set of Mac longtubes. Seems you gotta spend bucks these days for anything decent. That said, I bought a set of stainless longtubes for my coyote swapped f100...copies of the S197 BBKs....of off Chinabay for $150 new and they are absolute beauties.... seriously!

    you should have downloaded a free decibel reader app for the loudness test....i have single chamber flowmaster mufflers on my 91. its insanely deep loud (car alarms go off in parking lots). my engine has been modified more than that one though. no cats.

    I tried to buy a set of long tube BBk 351 swap headers. They took my money, but 6 months later they finally gave my money back, because they couldn’t provide the headers I ordered. So now I hunt parts elsewhere.

    Hey how’s ur day going? I got a 1990 mustang gt 5.0 and I figured I would let u know I got it fixed it was just the a arms were shot but I got one more issue that keeps me from driving and enjoying the car. I put brand new throttle cable in and it works great it don’t stick or anything until u turn the car on then the car idles fine for the most part but it stalls when stopping and it starts stick the throttle open at like 2 grand but u go a press the throttle and let of to lower the rpms it revs to like 5k and won’t come down till u really slam the throttle and let of real fast would u might know what it is And it also has brand new throttle body and when u take the throttle cable off it don’t have now sticking ether

      Hey bud! Glad you got the a arm situation figured out! It sounds like the cable is sticking somewhere, or maybe the pedal assembly needs to be lubricated 🤷‍♂️

    I'm curious why the new headers. If the stock ones are so bad and yet the bad welds on the new ones are not gasket matched, inside the collectors are often furbard... If you're not going to port the headers .... why waste the money?
    I recently bought a set from a BIG name company and it's gonna take 2 hours to port the mess. Outside is beautiful. Inside's a mess.
    Yesterday I saw a new mid length set for a SBC and inside they are the worst I've ever seen. But pretty outside. SMH 🤔 I wish that I could post the pictures here.
    BTW, Have you ever run headers on a flow bench, before and after? Bigdogs Porting does and has a video per se. 5.0 headers but I don't remember which brand. Added something like 30% to the flow. 👍😎
    And how many folks run headers and squashed bend pipes? LOL

      It’s funny you mention the “bent pipe.” I’ve not seen flow numbers but I have seen Dyno results before/after of a bent pipe and the Dyno results did not change

      Interesting.
      David Freiberger did a show on smashing header tubes while on the dyno. Almost zero difference.
      I went from turndowns to tailpipes on my 90 and instantly noticed @ 15 tq/HP (guessing) worse. Significant seat of pants. 🤔🤔🤔😎

      Only thing I ever got from them that was worth anything were their rear gripp upper and lower control arms, been going on em for about 2 yrs now, those with the nittos I'm running, the cars got pretty decent traction.
