Why not use the B-21 as the "NGAD" for the air force. The Navy is always forward deployed and is size limited. The airforce doesn't need to worry about either of those. You could load up a B-21 with the new longer range air to air missiles. Then give it a RQ-180 and a couple loyal Wingman. Build 500 of them to do both bombing and air superiority.

The size limitation isn't much of an issue. Remember the Navy had no issue stuffing loads of F14s on their flight decks and that plane is a bus. And I'm fairly certain if it came to it the Navy wouldn't mind carrying less FAXX since it will be vastly more capable in an A2A role than the F18.

But they have differs use cases. Navy needs fold up wings to store more jets, but that limits max G forces. Also, Navy needs heavy duty landing gear which has the operative word “heavy.” Air Force doesn’t need folding wings so that it can be more maneuverable. Air Force can use lighter landing gear so that weight savings can be either faster, more fuel or more weapons. Combining both of those systems results in lots of trade offs resulting in a less efficient jet.

I worked on the JSF program that led to the development and deployment of the F-35 fighter. It was originally scheduled to deploy in 2008. It eventually started deploying 8 years later in low quantities in 2015 and the first mission capable squadron of the B models weren’t operation until 2018, a full 10 years after the original plan. That was 18 years after tue full scale development program was awarded.
The F/A-XX is currently where the F-35 program was in 1995. It took Lockheed 23 years to complete operational test and field the first squadron. The F/A-XX concept is more complex than the F-35. I sincerely doubt the F/A-XX will deploy before the late 2040’s, if ever.

It's all about the aerodynamical limitations of a kite / flyig wind design: it works like a charm for bombers like B-2 Spirit / B-21 Raider.. but not for fighters, who need - at least for now - massive horizontal and vertical mobile control surfaces / empennage for the more needed "acrobatic" maneuverability.

NORAD is a concern for both countries, it's a strategic win for both Canada and the US.

Not surprised, besides the Navy I’d argue needs priority anyway… due to carriers being the US’s main method of military power projection. The 15EX though…. Hell of a jet, 5th and 6th gen be damned, if it can detect from insane range at high altitude going screaming fast, it will have the magazine capacity of air to air weapons to give the middle finger to most everything. Hyper maneuverability is a cool party trick, low observability is too…. But I’d argue like 18-20 air to air weapons and insane range and detection coupled with Mach 2+ speeds don’t care… with these new radars, if it can see it, it best go cold and run away, if they can….a fusion of F15EX and F-35 could be very, very interesting.

However against a J-20 that is significantly less observable plus has better long range weapons (at the moment) i wouldnt say the F-15 EX would have an easy time
I mean the J-20 lacks in some aspects for sure but if it can detect the very large RCS of the Eagle while still avoiding a reliable lock due to being stealthy enough (if) then it will have good chances with the long range weapons to strike and run off before the eagle could really lock on. But we dont know cuz the actual details for this are classified

F-15 is an evolutionary dead end. The moment you base anything on that, you're completely surrendering stealth. which means you aren't going to be operating it anywhere inside of hostile airspace. Look at why Russia doesn't fly its jets inside of Ukranian airspace, at present.
And the more you hang off of it, the more unforgiving the resulting speed, agility and range penalties are going to be.

A benefit of the modular approach to Next Gen aircraft is that the Navy can field a slightly compromised version of a 6th gen fighter, but will benefit from upgrades made to a slightly delayed Air Force version.
Staggering the procurement and delivery dates will build in upgrades to major systems incrementally between aircraft allowing for iterative upgrades throughout both programs.

Having wingdrone backup should be priority because drones can make maneuvers and pull Gs than humans can't plus they act as a extra layer of protection for our maned aircraft. I hope the Navy gets this done as soon as possible. If the Airforce can't make up it's mind then maybe they can later settle for the Navy standard with what ever modifications they may need but I would think that anything that can take off and land on an aircraft carrier should have no problems operating in an Airforce role. That's my opinion but I am no expert.

The problem with the top altitude of a fighter plane is the Armstrong line at about 62,000 to 63000 feet where gasses leave the blood steam. Higher altitudes require pressure suits to keep the pilots alive (in a decompression in the case of a cockpit with pressurization).

    • @JonMartinYXD
      @JonMartinYXD 4 дня назад

Yes, and those pressure suits are a significant hassle for flight operations. Hooking up umbilicals and strapping in requires two ground(deck?) crew kneeling or lying on platforms, head and arms down into the cockpit. On a carrier that work would have to be done on the hangar deck. For the pilots when they are flying, everything is more difficult. They have less visibility, less dexterity (bulky gloves), and can't pull high Gs because the weight of the helmet will injure their necks.

I met Colonell (retired at the time) Bob Gilliland when I was starting out in the USAF back in early 2000s. Had a full 15 minute conversation about him being the first person to fly the SR71 and his nervous he was. Told me it was not an easy plane to fly and it blew his mind once he pushed it's limits on test flights. He was such an interesting character and I loved his story.
He also shared a story about one of the other test pilots who was still active duty and how he essentially gave up ever making 0-6 because he volunteered to be on the program.
Gilliland was already retired by then with his bird but it was interesting to me how he expressed compassion for that other dudes career, not sure why the stuck with me.
Sadly I think Gilliland passed away few years ago, but he flew each and every single SR71 ever built before the military got them delivered, so that must of been cool as hell.

B21 with drone wingmen will outclass the FA-XX in the air superiority role. It and its drones will likely have smaller radar cross-sections, and can be loaded with more air to air missiles.
But only the Navy’s FA-XX and its Navy variant drone wingmen can operate within the range of China’s extensive missile network. Not even Guam is safe.
Good thing the B21 can fly from the other side of the Pacific.

I don't really understand why a Navy jet isn't good enough for everyone else to basically just use. Marines don't need this VTOL nonsense or their own jets at all, they can get coverage from Navy or Airforce. If it can take of fand land from a carrier it can take off and land on an airfield. You don't need massive payloads for stealth fighters anymore thanks to the missle truck concept that can launch from well outside of enemy range. The entire concept of separate branches is outdated and needs to end. Sure we can keep the legacy aspects and guys on ships can wear blue and guys on the ground can wear tan and call themselves army or navy, but all the communications, chain of command, and most importantly budget should be one military force. We've known since WWII that combined forces is the best way to conduct operations and the more you silo off the groups the harder that is.

By the time everything is set up and in place to start production the technology is no longer current. Which is why it makes sense to limit how many of any one type of plane are purchased to leave room for the next generation and to make any platform easy to upgrade.

    Who can know?
There's no program-of-record because it will be an evolved long-range F/A-35D strike-fighter. Sorry to spoil the fun re spooky NGAD speculation.
Australia currently uses the same strikefighter USN uses, and that was expanded to Growler. F/A-18F & E/A-18G both need to be replaced. NGJ is also being acquired by RAAF and the NGJ introduction is planned for 2032. Which fits perfectly. The planned replacement was announced & budgeted for during 2019.
Which was a very interesting, given there was no aircraft in sight that could do it, except a new USN F/A-XX. IMO this is the reason Australia cancelled the F-35A's acquisition at 72 airframes, instead of the "up to 100" F-35A that was planned. Which was mystifying. The reason given at the time was RAAF was looking forward to buying "new technology". This explains it. RAAF's planning to acquire around 48 of these new USN aircraft, to fill both Strike and EA roles, because the USN is doing the exact same thing. Because of NGJ, whatever USN replaces Growler with, RAAF will do the same. The F-35 program-of-record already exists as does the aircraft and its airworthiness certificate, all of which can be added to.
So the advanced 'new-gen', new-technology aircraft will be an evolved F/A-35D, and E/A-35E. These will incorporate improvements, advancements and role optimizations that are based on the F-35C airframe. They will most likely include first use of a 6th-gen AETP engine for extended range and loiter, and provide air-supremacy edge and better altitude performance, including supercruise and kinematic advantage. AETP will also reduce the drag impost of carrying NGJ on an E/A variant, and the improved altitude performance will increase NGJ footprint performance, and its cooling.
    AETP:
"... In 2016, the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP) was launched with the goal of developing and testing adaptive engines for the future sixth generation fighter programs, Penetrating Counter Air (PCA) or Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) for USAF, and F/A-XX for US Navy, as well as potential re-engining of the F-35. The program assigned the new designations XA100 for General Electric's design and XA101 for Pratt & Whitney's. ..."
