You're right that the facial expressions in this are great. One of my favourite things about the author/illustrator is how distinct she makes everyone look, even amongst the same races.
There is side content where she breaks the characters down to just their eyes. I and may others are able to identify each character from just the eyes alone. There was another break down but, I don't remember what it was off. I think it was the mouths with similar results.

This episode expresses one of the greatest strengths of this series. The world building but not just as world building, World Building for character building. The Dunmeshi's living armor like most of the mosters couldve just been a monster thats just like that and left it at that. But the world is so well thought out that why and how monsters are like that are explored in depth as well as their relationship with the environment and people around them. Just this episode introduces: a colony of armored mollusks and its behaviors and ecology, adventurers being basically tomb raiders stripping the dungeon for any profit they can, and the lessened weight of death in the dungeon. Any of those topics could've been explored at great length on their own but Ryoko Kui instead uses all those topics as a vehicle to explore and build on the character that is Laios. Sometimes its subtle as his inability to pick up the shadiness of his party members in the flashback. Or sometimes its as overt as his comedically OTT passion for monsters. All the way to Laios' willingness to view monster's ecology and read beyond their covers. Every little encounter in this dungeon builds big and small on our understanding of the people who inhabit it. By the end of the series I didnt just feel like I could feel and imagine the world, I felt like I intimately knew the cast and how they would walk it. From their motivations to the dumb little quirks that make them who they are. Really love this series. Ryoko Kui's a GOAT.
I love how she shows that dwarves have a higher tolerance to heat, instead of just having the characters say it. Senshi sticks his thumb in boiling oil and can just grab the armor pieces off of the grill. While Laios encountering both has him screaming in pain from the heat.
This was when I started loving Laios ( I liked him in the previous eps but this one just amped it up)

I hope that everyone who watches this anime clearly remembers how much Laios loves monsters, this will be both tragic and humorous in the future 🤣

Chilchuk and Laios are soo different, you just gotta wonder how they got together to form a party lol. Laios is a super kind guy though so I could see people being drawn to him, like Senshi and the monster eating. But yeah I love the expressiveness of the characters, even Marcille's ears lol.
About creatures that hide themselves not being poisonous: the manga points out that while this is a *general* trend, Laios is actually wrong that they never do, and was taking a bigger risk than he thought 😂
Time to flex those advanced animation muscles! This is such a beautiful and expressive episode. Really exhibits the more zany comedy of the early story, before it gets even zanier, weirder, and deeper!

You ought to watch this episode in the English dub too! Damian Haas, the voice actor for Laios, has such an unhinged performance.

I’m so glad someone recognized Laios's intelligence. He’s so freaking smart. Both in world and people who react to the show NEVER realize how smart he is and it pisses me off. Everyone just labels him a freak and ignores his other qualities.

Laios is one of the smartest in the series, but his mind is really on only one track. Out of his favorite subject he's quite limited or uninterested, especially about interpersonal intelligence.
