Major props to Greg Sheid for shutting down the Son of Beast just after coming onto the job instead of just band-aiding it like his predecessors.

As a long time coaster fan I'm sad that it didn't work out and I genuinely hope we get another looping wooden coaster, though chances are it'll either be no taller than 100ft or it'll be steel framed making it more of a hybrid than a true wooden coaster. Many riders over the years stated that the transition from wooden to steel track for the loop was jarring and caused minor neck pain in many riders. I wished to ride it back in 2008 and even had a poster of it.
At least I got to be one of the many people who were injured on Green Lantern First Flight.

@@spinningpeanutat the Six Flags New England they turned the old wooden coaster into a hybrid but it's still better than getting rid of it because it was there before Six Flags bought the amusement park.

I live in Cincinnati and rode Son of Beast many times. Although it really did beat the hell out of you, those rose bowls were so intense and fun. I acknowledge that it was dangerous from the start, but I really do miss that violent ride. Brings back so many memories.

My biggest issue is the misadventure ruling. Death is not an expected outcome of riding any amusement park ride, and if we treat it like it is, we should tear all the rides down.

I'm willing to take that risk for a thrill ride. I know that all man made devices are not 100% safe and smart enough to know that speed kills. You should be smart enough to understand that even taking precautions, death is always possible on any high speed or heavy machine or ride created by humans.

the amount of times a child and even parents have gotten angry at me when taking my shift running the drop tower, saying the person before me was letting some actual child on the ride before and that it was fine even though they are way too tiny and we could lose our job with one bracelet check/undercover checker- is still beyond me. I was in a roller coaster accident when I was 6 years old. We slammed into a faulty car that was stopped at the bottom of a big hill. I ate the handlebar so hard that it shoved my 4 front teeth up into my gums. My older sister who was sitting behind me suffered a broken leg. The boy next to me had healed burn scars from a previous house fire that he was in and a bunch of them broke open. I don’t remember a lot of the aftermath after being taken off the ride and rushed to the hospital. I could not eat normal food, drink from a straw or even blow out my birthday candles till I was almost 8. My teeth were jacked when my permanent teeth came in. I had extensive dental work and braces when I was a teenager due to my injuries. My parents sued but in 1979 you didn’t get awarded settlements like you do today. It was around $20k put in a trust fund that matured when I was 18. I have PTSD from this that has prevented me from riding amusement park rides most of my life. Only recently, I’ve overcome some fears for my granddaughter. Watching this video, makes my teeth hurt all over again. 😢

abe saffron was jewish, how did I know that? its like jewish people have a callous disregard for human life, same for the jewish director of the movie noahs ark, who ended up killing several by flooding and is quoted as saying the actors have to take care of themselves before the incident. Not to mention The jewish owner of the twin towers who was there every day beforehence until 9/11, had taken out a several billion dollar insurance policy on it 2 weeks prior Lucky Larry, there was a group of israeli "movers" that were shown high fiving and dancing as the towers fell, when interviewed they said they were there to record the incident, they dissolved their company and moved back to israel, some were confirmed to be mossad agents. Like when you have this sort of things happen over and over again, in an inordinate ratio, with people in power being both of that religion and incredibly callous with the lives of others, or just promoting the destruction of the conceptual fabric of culture and identity. It fits if you look at what the talmud says about the gentiles.

There was another accident on a “rapids ride” in Australia-this time it wasn’t too much water, it was not enough. One of the circular rafts stranded on the guide rails, was hit by the next raft and both flipped. Four people died, not from drowning, but because they were caught in the machinery that moved the rafts. It took hours to recover the bodies out of the machinery and many of the first responders said it was the worst thing they’d seen. I had always thought those things were fairly safe - shallow water, cameras everywhere, no heights to fall from... Next time my family go to a park, if you can’t swim, you’re not going on a water ride. It might not help, but it could also make the difference so….erring on the side of caution.

I'm surprised with the Orlando Free Fall Drop Tower incident, that they didn't post the weight limit in the same places that they put the height warning. It wouldn't absolve them of everything, but it certainly puts a bit of the responsibility back on the customer.

I haven’t been to that park in particular but usually they only put up a height requirement but at the end of the day it’s up to the operator to decide whether that person can ride or not. That being said, this “kid” is bigger than most grown men at the age of 14. The same way that a kid that’s too small has to understand they’re too small, he should’ve known he’s too big to ride carnival rides.

The park illegaly tempered with the seat, so that ovrweight people could fit in. So it is very unlikely that there were any weight restrictions.
The park is to blame, but the employees, that put the people on the ride, are not because they didn't know about that. They maybe were a bit naive to never question the instructions to place overweight riders in the first two seats, but the boy was as niave to not question why he is allowed to ride this thing when he is not allowed every other ride and to not try if the restriction fits him before the ride took off.
But that were young people, i don't blame them to be a bit naive from time to time, we all were, but i blame the park operators who ordered the seat to be altered illegaly.

Or the parents/adults for going to a questionable at best park because Icon being poor on safety wasn’t a secret.

I worked on Banshee in 2017; it’s so eerie, they left the station of Son of Beast to rot. It was used as a haunted attraction for a few seasons, but now it’s completely abandoned. When walking the Banshee track at night, my supervisors and coworkers would dare each other to sneak into the old station to steal old parts and bits from it. The trains are still in the station underneath it, and half the time the eternal flame for Son of Beast isn’t even turned on. It’s wild to me, because I vividly remember being like 11-12 years old and crying when I found out they were gonna tear it down, because it meant I would never get to ride it (I was a huge coaster fan, then and now). My Dad and I rode our bikes from our house to the park to watch them tear down the final hill. It’s so wild seeing such a huge part of my childhood memories (and teenage stories) on such a big channel.

You missed nothing. I rode it on one of my many US trips in the early 2000's and it was HORRIBLE. I had 2 discs out from it, and the only other coaster I ever had such an injury (or close to but not as bad) was on was Hercules at Dorney (thank goodness that's gone as well). SOB left me hotel room bound for 7 days on pain pills and Bengay. You can imagine how happy my travel partner was LOL. He got a vile headache from it and took a day off and a lot of Tylenol, but in comparison he was the lucky one.
Since then I do my research and do not ride rough as guts rides anymore. Rattles and a few bumps are ok, I set the threshold to about X2 standards, nothing worse than that in terms of roughness. It's just not worth it, no ride is. And it wasn't even enjoyable cause it was like we were in a salad shaker. I rode it when it still had a loop. One ride in the back car like the moron I was (thinking it would be the best seat), and even there, zero airtime. Just 2 minutes of beating me up. I never rode it again, even after loop was removed. No way.
It must have been 2002 but I went to USA 98/2000/01/02 twice/03/04/05/07/08/14/16/19/23 so I can't remember exactly which trip as I've been to Kings Island quite a few times in the early 2000's (then called PKI). I've only been once to KI however since SOB was demolished, and that was this year, just a couple months back! Had a wonderful time. Glad it's gone. Banshee wasn't exactly smooth either which shocked me for a B&M, and shivering timbers was starting to need som re track maintenance IMO (still rideable), but I missed the older woodies this time, I didn't want to risk it. Nothing is worth real pain.

Any airline who puts safety first cannot compete economically and goes out of business. Nobody wants to pay $5000 per seat. They same is true for amusement parts. People aren't going to pay $500 for a day pass. Sp the parks hire under qualified people to run the rides, and they only do major maintenance inspections twice a year. Parks that do put safety first and spend what it takes, they close down because they don't make money.

The real danger lies in the monotony of day to day operations. No matter how safe and vigilant park operators are, eventually everyone gets lulled into a false sense of security. For example, you drive home every day on the freeway at lethal speeds, and yet you almost never consider that any moment could be your last. It’s virtually impossible for any human to be on high alert for danger, constantly without fail.

The fact is that if they were required by law to have these standards then companies would exist and they won't change 1000 per ticket or day pass, stop shilling chike.

Now that I think about it, the number of times I’ve been slightly injured on amusement park rides is kinda unsettling.
-A roller coaster slammed on the brakes so hard that my face hit the seat in front of me. The people behind me noticed and advised me to sue but I just walked it off.
-I’ve blacked out two or three times.
    - I went on a ride that pinched my legs hard between the restraints every time it flipped upside down.
-I was waiting for a ride to start when a very very large woman was stuffed into the seat next to me. I couldn’t get my arm through the restraint and it was stuck at an awkward angle making me unable to hold on and so I flopped around painfully.
-The girl next to me wouldn’t hold on and every time we turned she slammed into me and I got a huge bruise on my hip.
-The time me and my cousin went on a stand up coaster and it wasn’t locked down all the way so her feet weren’t even touching the ground the whole ride.
-My 6’6 stepdad was seated next to me on a coaster and every time we went round a bend my head slammed into his knee. He also said he felt unsafe.
I think I’m done with coasters and thrill rides, I’ll stick to the slow stuff.

As someone who grew up in Iowa and went to Adventure land many a times throughout my childhood, the raging river accident is no surprise for me. Not only is Adventure Land very lax with safety plus the Iowa regulations are so loose. After the August Derecho of 2020 a whole bunch of Iowa's architecture and agriculture from the west to the east, was heavily impacted. I'm not at all surprised that a year later the structure of any Adventure land rides/attractions failed. It's a tragedy in itself and my thoughts go out to others who also lost family during the disaster, but the Iowan government did nothing to help Iowans, let alone supply aid to Linn and Johnson county the counties hit the hardest by the disaster. I worked at (What is now a Six Flags). I was a rides attendant and one of our new rides called The Iron Eagle had the same mechanism as the Drop Tower. The lights indicated that the seat harness was locked and safe. There were weight restrictions. If someone who was sitting in the seat was a bit larger the seat harnass would not lock “on its own” so the attendant would give it a push and many times it would lock. There were also many times we had to simply dismiss the patron because the harnass would not lock due to their size. We had ONE incident on that ride where they gave a patrons seat too much force to lock and allowed him to ride. His oxygen was cut off due to the pressure of his body weight and he passed out. It’s a patrons responsibility just as much as a rides operator to KNOW their weight exceeds the rides restriction’s. You know how much you weigh!

One look at him whole and my first thought would've been to refuse him no matter the pleas, it wasn't worth losing a life over one more canceled ride. He could've always come back after he went on a diet. The ride is canceled for everyone now.

Although this isn't a roller coaster, I swear I almost witnessed an accident with my cousin when we rode the Pirate Ship ride at the fair. He was a small kid despite his age, and the ride's "restraints" were pretty flimsy and thin compared to other rides, it was just a bar with no seatbelts. It also shook a bit when you held on, and when the ride would reach the top, you'd feel your butt lift before you came crashing back down.
Since my cousin was a lot smaller than other kids, he went a little too high since we sat all the way in the back, to the point where my mother had to suddenly reach over and hold him down. He wasn't even pushing himself up, it was just because of the way gravity worked and how the bar had no real restraint that it could have been really bad for him if my mother hadn't pinned him down or if he wasn't holding on.
I was terrified of that ride afterwards because I did not feel safe in it. Across from itself was a ride called "The Pharaoh", and it was one of my favorites because it had almost the same height as the Pirate Ship, but very secure bars that locked you in place. No lifting at all. Just goes to show we should never sacrifice safety for the sake of thrill; just because most can live to tell the tale, there's going to be that one who doesn't.

Can't see how they weren't found culpable with the Top-Thrill Dragster ride when they were replacing bolts (presumably nuts as well) with ones of the wrong grade! Non high-tensile bolts will just stretch, then look like they need tightening, which then takes them to the point of shearing under load!

Maybe it's not sensible, but I truly believe roller coasters and amusement parks should be inspected once ever one to two months. Six months is a crazy amount of time for a ride to go unchecked (even if the park employees and mechanics do a quick scope).

Crazy story… I live in Kansas City and we have a roller coaster at Worlds of Fun called the TimberWolf. When I was almost in High school I rode that ride, I was a tall skinny little thing but all they had was these lap bars that didn’t even hold you in and a seatbelt that came loose. I remember the first drop, having my feet in the air doing a handstand on the bar looking down at my death, before my friend tried grabbing me and pulling me back in… THANKFULLY at that point we hit a hill going up and I was somehow able to fall back but get into my seat again thanks to my friend who was riding w me. The following day after that incident, a 14 yr old girl riding in the SAME cart as me, fell to her death. I was terrified! I knew after that incident w me, it was SURE to happen and it did. I reported it but it did nothing. Idk how I even still like heights and rollercoasters after that ordeal. Scary for sure…

The Estrada woman who left the defective Raging River ride without saying a word should be ashamed. She stated the family knew something was very wrong with the rafts but 'didn't bother to say anything because they needed to leave'. I don't care if her son was 'autistic and needed to leave', her son getting upset for a few minutes wasn't worth potentially alerting others to danger? A boy died because of that ride, and that other family could have done something about it beforehand.

I don't know if it caused any deaths, but there was a state fair accident that happened here in the U.S. about a year or two ago that looked like that drop tower thing but of course, a different one. Or maybe it wasn't a drop tower as I believe it also spun around. Either way, as it rose up, it suddenly crashed back down to the ground. I wince to think about the amount of people with terrible back pain left from the incident if no one died. If.
My mom had shown me the video when I raised the subject of us going to the state fair together, as we had done before the pandemic as a really fun mother-daughter evening, and she subsequently said she wouldn't be riding anymore rides after that. I can certainly understand, especially with state fairs. When we lived in a small town, the frickin fair paid literal children, like my younger brother, who was maybe 12 or 13 at the time, to help disassemble the rides for a little money (I don't know how much but it wasn't much, maybe $100 or less). He ended up getting an injury to his hand, a pretty deep cut, when one of the other kids mishandled something they were supposed to be carrying together. Who the hell hires CHILDREN to disassemble rides?! At the time, I must have not realized how wrong that was, given I was a child myself, and neither my brother nor I ever said anything to our mom, but looking back, I wish I'd have had the knowledge to tell our mom and let the authorities know.
I actually rode those rides and to my knowledge, no accidents had been reported but if they cut corners like that, it feels like a matter of time. Also, as evidenced by this video that only covered state park accidents, it seems state fair accidents don't get as much attention as they probably should. I actually implore you to do another video like this that covers those, as I think they're just as important, maybe even moreso. My family has never had money for traveling to a full-scale amusement park and I suspect the same is true for many American families. So, the state fair is about all we'll ever get to experience. Knowing what has happened in the past and any known companies of negligence would be very helpful.

I don't recommend riding any rides that are disassembled and reassembled frequently. There are so many things that can go wrong when building a ride and most of the time the people reassembling it aren't professionals in any manner. You roll a dice every time you ride and if you roll the wrong number, you get hurt or die.

Clearly those types of rides have a lot of flaws and need to not be a thing anymore.

Before I actually worked for a local amusement park and zoo (in the UK, in 1997-1999), I actually went on one of their rollercoasters (they only had 2 at the time, and were VERY tame) when I was 14years old.
The safety bar DIDN'T lock properly when I rode it. As I said, thankfully(!), it WAS a tame rollercoaster and not too much of an issue at the time. I DID tell the kids who were working on the ride (18year olds were routinely left in charge) and the carriage I was in WAS removed immediately. But what I'm getting at is that it DOES happen, sometimes those magnetic safety bars DON'T lock, for whatever reason.
I was fine, as aforementioned, it was a pretty tame rollercoaster. And 4years later I would work in that very park in the exact area it was. Thankfully in the shop outside the ride as opposed to the ride itself...
These days, 20/25 years later, the park now has 'proper' competitive thrill-seeker rides. More daring than anything they've ever had before.

the family friendly move is both due to covid and a park buy out, they were bought out by a company that only runs family parks and the covid shut downs made it so that they had to shutdown and scrap the ultimate due to its upkeep costs, this further pushed the parent company to say screw it no more thrill rides.
