Thrift Store Prices on Antiques & Vintage at Country Auction

  • This is the place to buy! A variety of antiques and vintage are on tap for us at Cotton's Auction in Dawson Springs, Kentucky tonight, and we sense there's deals to be had...but so do a whole bunch of other people! So how do we compete at a live auction without letting auction fever consume our wallet?
    Picking out the mid-century art and kitchen glass, antique razors and cutlery, jewelry and pottery piled amongst housewares, Christmas decor and Elvis collectibles is a job! We do it eagerly, talking about what we see that grabs us (stained glass, coins, toys) and what we need to avoid (cracks, fakes and reproductions) to avoid the mistakes we've made at past auctions. My thoughts go to figuring my maximum bid on the things I like so that I don't succumb to auction fever.
    But the fever starts when the bids begin! We watch a lot of neat things go just out of our reach--a clean 1960s Pyrex fridge set, Moon & Stars jars and tableware, vaseline and uranium glass...but we stick to our plan, resisting paying that $5-10 extra that would squeeze our profit too much. Then the furniture goes up for bid, and things sell for prices we can't believe. Does a 1970s fad based on 1870s styles outsell true 1870s furniture? We watch in amazement while we wait for our table of stuff to come up for bid...
    ...and then, it does! We're suddenly buying everything in sight, our bidding rhythm helped by having outlasted some of our competing buyers. The Blenko fish? Check. Good Fenton compote color? Check. 1960s scale? Check. Along with a few surprises, we're suddenly racking up stuff at sub-Goodwill prices, and we happily spend $225...and make note of when the next auction is!

    Good evening, George! Love the styling of "Sweet Treats and Eats"! I liked that block pulley. For some reason, I'm drawn to those things 😅 That Mosser "Beaded Shell" pitcher was really pretty. It is from a Dugan mold. The old wood fishing lures fascinate me. I'd like a collection fixed to a wall hanging display. I actually like the ones that are a bit worn best. That Gothic Victorian chair had a nice look. It would make a nice bedroom chair. I would've been all over that kitchen clock, even with nowhere to put it, for $7.00! I'm not believing how low the furniture was going there. That would be a FANTASTIC way to furnish a house! $5.00 for the Victorian chair...😑 OMG! I would've had to rent a U-Haul!!! 😂 That brass, double-wick lamp was something I would've had to try for. Those old chamber pots actually make good rubbish "cans" in a bedroom. I use my grandparents old enamelware one in my bedroom as a rubbish "can". We have six decanters full of marbles from my dad. Some of them are clay ones. They are from the 1930s and '40s. That's a nice Toledo scale. I like that size. Congrats on the fish! I like that mattock, too. I'd put that to use round here. George, that was SUPER-FUN!!!!! It's been forever since I've been to a live auction. I would've loaded up at that one! Thanks for taking us along!!!

    Why spraypainted that beautiful lady? There are powdered pigment paints out now that actually look like oiled bronze. I repaired a broken giraffe lamp and repainted it with oiled bronze color paint and it was gorgeous. I would have bought that cracked lady, fixed the crack and sold her for quite a bit. The best material for filling cracks and fixing chips is Dixie Belle Mud. I use up jars of that stuff one after the other. Great stuff. I have a piece now waiting for a new jar to arrive.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  6 месяцев назад

      Dixie Belle makes great stuff! I didn't know about the mud though. I wish I had the patience and skill to match colors well

    • @persiphonehellecat
      @persiphonehellecat 6 месяцев назад +1

      Color matching is the hard part. I took color theory in college and it was one of the hardest classes I had to take. Taking all those little chips and lining them up by shade and tint almost made me blind. I was never so shocked as when I learned that there is no green at all in khaki green. It is a shade of yellow. Sometimes I cheat. I take the piece with me to Michael's and go to where they have all those 2 dollar bottles of acrylic paint and try my best to match that way. You find you can get pretty close and usually with some primaries plus black and white you can get close enough to cover the mid after it cures and you seal it. Feather a couple layers of paint on and then the problem of choosing the glaze - matte, satiin, gloss or some mixture. My feeling is that fewer and fewer things are going to be in mint condition as time goes by. Italian ceramics, and other MCM pieces chip like mad. Forget Capidemonte - you can almost guarantee it is chipped without even picking it up. For young people looking for a niche in the art world, I highly recommend museum curation or restoration studies. It is very satisfying to be able to repair something that is damaged but still very much loved by someone. I love that English show The Repair Shop. And I am a huge fan of Daniel Silva's novels about the Israeli assassin whose cover is that he is a world class art restorer. If I had it to do over again and I was young, I would absolutely consider restoration as a career. @@TheAntiqueNomad

    Why do they give the item to the bidder before they pay for it?

    George, I can't thank you enough for this video...I so miss auctions as they're so few and far between where I am. It was nice that you kept the viewer involved instead of holding the camera down. Absolutely love the scale you got and straight razors! Thank you again and Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    George do you ever see old clothes for a raggedy Ann doll?
    My sister and I both had raggedy Ann's. Years later when her two daughters were getting older and she was getting rid of a bunch of their toys she found ab old raggedy Ann she thought was hers, bit when she took a closer look she saw the initials CC on the butt in magic marker.
    She realized it was my original doll and not hers so she gave it back to me. It's from the late 1950's or early 1960's.
    It has no clothes. Someday I would love to find original clothes for her.
