    Ugh this sent my stress level through the roof. I've been looking at all these videos about OTA and was feeling good about it but now, not so much after listening to you. I'm 28 years old and I've been wanting to go back to school for a while now, but three years ago I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression and stopped me from starting school. I don't have any degrees but I work and I'm also a care taker for my very sickly mother. I thought I'd be able to handle it, but now I'm not so sure.

      Yeah I agree with you I'm pretty stressed about it as well. Im working on getting through the program at a community college and my fear was the biology portion but now I'm not so sure what to expect. However, nothing in the world is easy and if this is a field that you really want to do then I feel like its worth giving it your best shot. Stay positive and keeping positive thoughts is a major key to success. We got this!

      Same! I’m pretty discouraged now.
      I’m a (young 😉) 47 year old, single, working mother. I was a stay at home mom/housewife for most of my adult life…then got divorced.
      I transitioned from being a parent volunteer to a SPED (Autism) Teacher’s Aide, & have been in the school setting for 4 years now.
      I’ll lose all financial support from my ex-husband in a little
      over a year & it will be VERY difficult to support my family on just my TA salary.
      I always talk with the different COTA’s that come to our classroom & they’ve all encouraged me to start an OTA program asap.
      I’ve been doing a lot of research & making phone calls…& was just starting to get excited about actually doing this…
      but the part in this video recommending not working during the program has just gutted me.
      I was already worried about fatigue & brain bandwidth while working.
      Unfortunately, I can’t afford to stop working…& the last thing I need is to pack on a school loan debt from a program I was unable to complete.
      Man, I really wish I could turn back time & go to school when I was young & without any responsibilities. 😞

    I am a mom with a one-year-old daughter going to OTA school currently. I obtained a bachelor's before entering the program so I thought it wouldn't be so difficult. It is HARD. Especially being a mom, but it is doable if OT really is your passion, you find ways to make it work!

      Hey Erin! Literally just graduated 2 days ago so I will give you my 2 cents. First, find a good school. The one I attended won 1st place for the Aspen prize, try and choose a school who either won in the past or in the top 3. Hard to fail if you got a great school that cares about you! My program was 5 semesters instead of 4, we had summer classes(18 months). I don't think comprehension or understanding was hard, it was more the amount of material you had to learn, and the study time required. It's hard to have a social life if you want to do well, and I didn't when I was in the program. It was all work and no play since I wanted good grades and I wanted to challenge myself. A lot of motivation/discipline/high reading score is required. Documentation is hard and it will be your least favorite part of the job once you're working. Spring semester is the hardest for most, 19 credit hours if you don't have credits transferred in. I had 5 of 17 classmates fail but here are their reasons: One guy dropped out at the start because he wasn't passionate about it. One girl in spring failed because she did not like to study. Two more girls in summer failed their fieldwork, one was because she undressed in front of a minor. Lastly, one guy failed his final fieldwork because he did not enjoy helping people. He was a friend, he told me he was only in it for the money and I told him to drop out in the first semester but he didn't listen. You have to either do something really stupid or not have your heart in it to not pass. If you find a good school and you have a passion for helping people, you will pass I can almost promise you. Make sure you don't do it for the wrong reasons because your teachers will know. I personally think PTA and nursing are harder programs. Good luck on your journey Erin. Have a good life.

      @@THEEMillennial.90sBBY It was hard for me because it was so fast paced. What is the job outlook of OTA. I keep reading on sites that the job outlook is "excellent" but on forums with real OTs/OTAs, they just say the field is saturated and it's really hard for new grads to get a job.

    • @MJ-gj6mj
      @MJ-gj6mj 2 года назад +1

      Yes I'm thinking the job outlook actually could be excellent, but there is apparently some insurance issues happening. They want to hire less COTAS and just use the OTs since they do evaluations. Now, with that being said, years back the LVN programs were said to be phasing out. The insurance wanted RNs bc they did the same and some. However, now they are hiring on not only the LVNs but also patient care technicians and things of that nature and then they want the RN to have a bachelors instead. So healthcare is always changing and it's so hard to commit to a program and be uncertain of the job outlook.

    I really loved this video!! It’s so relatable. I’m going on Level II on Monday and yes it’s a very hard program! I’ve also been a CNA for 12 years. Taking care of people is a passion of mine. We started with 20 and now have 17 students. I quit my job in the 3rd semester because it was a lot of course work and studying. Many tears shed but If you push through and don’t give up you will make it!!!

    How was your Level II experience?
    What were your Level II fw settings?
    How did you prepare for fw before going?

      It will be hard, but it will be worth it! You have to let your weaknesses become your strengths. When you don't do as well as you would have hoped, explore new ways to study. Also, in school, as long as you pass/ graduate and pass the exam, the people you work for will not care about your grades, I promise! Perfectionism can be really discouraging.

      I could be wrong but work on your test anxiety. It will save you a headache down the road. Your final to get nationally certified is 200 questions, timed, and done under video surveillance so nip this in the butt before it gets worse. I personally know what grade I will get on a test before I even take it most of time. It all comes down to how you study. Don't cram and dump, aim to remember for the long term. Learn it now and study less in the future.

Look at their NBCOT pass rate though to be sure they prepare you for the exam for certification. I am at an expensive, private OT school now only because my husband is military. Hi, I’m looking into becoming a COTA and hopefully will be starting school next summer. Although, I do have a question. I was required to shadow some COTA’s and one gentleman I did shadow was super negative about the career telling me how he hates it and how you can’t make a living off of this and that he was getting paid per pt he saw rather than per hour, and this was at a pediatric office. So sometimes only 3 pts will come in for the day and he’d be making little money. I know I would personally love this career, but I would also love to support my family with one job. With that said, is this true? Do offices only pay per pt rather than per hour? This is coming from Arizona

    • @fan1008
      @fan1008 4 года назад +2

      Depends on the practice setting and state, I'll list the 4 main ones. Long term care(nursing homes), acute care(hospitals), out patient clinics(maybe the one you mentioned), and home health. Most pay by the hour and home health is something like 40-60 dollars per house visit. That pediatric office is not the norm, you usually only see that in the home-health setting. What state was he in?

    • @cotaconnection9400
      @cotaconnection9400  4 года назад +3

      The answer to this depends on the clinic. Some clinics pay per hour, some salary. My last job was salary (I would get paid whether I was with a patient or not), whereas I am part time now for $30/ hr. If a patient last minute cancels, I get paid, but sometimes I am not paid for missed hours if they give me enough notice. Those are questions you should definitely ask at an interview, but there are places where that is not an issue. Hope this helps!

      One piece of advice I would tell new grads is when you do find a full time job is to never take students. There really is no benefit to the student or the clinical supervisor. Granted you will get 4 credits per student but:
      1. All you're doing is giving the student false hope and wasting their time so when they graduate and pass their boards they have to settle for something much less
      2. You help lower wages offered by hospitals, SNFs and outpatient clinics because you've helped flood the market.
      3. You esentially help the university keep accreditation to pump out more and more students flooding the market. Which university goals are.
      a. To get money from tuition which ever way possible
      b. To keep their accreditation, as long as they have a pass rate of 70%.
