I think minimalism is exactly what you said it’s what you make of it. Any path you take should be fulfilling and beneficial. I saw a lady that was a minimalist but had two large bookcases filled with books. She didn’t have much else. What one person’s minimalism looks like is not going to be the same for everyone. So keep your path and tailor to your needs. It’s all a learning process anyways. Great content.
Totally agree on the ‘latte’ idea. I make my own coffee in order to save money but I treat myself with a ‘expensive’ coffee on Fridays after a long week and the same goes for days that have been tough. It’s a little thing that cheers me up :)
I did this- bought a 2nd hand nespresso and frother for speed on a morning. Howeve on payday I get a coffee shop coffee for my commute and occasionally a coffee shop coffee if I’m out for coffee with a friend
From personal experience, we keep ventilation between the mattress and the floor because a mattress gathers moisture from us at night (sweat, etc.) and through the air. If there is not a space between the mattress and the floor, and especially if you have wood floors, this can warp the wood underneath. ♥️
One thing to consider with a mattress directly on the floor is moisture and condensation. Depending on the season and where you live, mold can develop under the mattress. Most cultures that sleep directly on the floor have different styles of bedding, and often store the bedding during the day, giving both floor and bedding the chance to dry out. So as long as you are regularly checking under the mattress for moisture or mold, you should be good. I have a basic metal bed frame mostly because I prefer my bed surface to be a bit higher off the floor.
Exactly what I came here to say. I couldn't have the mattress without a frame due to humidity and condensation - would damage the mattress & cause health issues
The only thing that you might consider when it comes to your bed frame is that when there is no space between the floor and the mattress it can get damp and eventually mouldy (that happened to me). Other than that I loved sleeping on the floor
I think being a minimalist is not about depriving what we want but also choosing what we need that makes us happy. I still go to the coffeeshop cause it’s one of my favorite thing to do and try different taste of coffee even if I work as a barista and brew my own coffee at home, it also gives me satisfaction. Your bake goods looks scrumptious too!
A bed frame provides air flow under the matress, which prevent mold and mildew from accumulating there. It is rather important. In other cultures, e.g. Japan, where they sleep on a matress on a tatami, they hang and air the matress outside every day...
A bed frame above the ground can be essential for good ventilation of the mattresses. If a mattress is flat on the floor, mold can form on the underside after a long time.
Wonderful human being, In Japan and Korea 'normal' is to sleep on a fouton right on the floor...Whatever is healthy and comfortable for your body is simply the best. As for the latte... I believe that taking away the small pleasures is just sad. I buy less, consume less but still afford warm drinks, nice books and generally things that make me feel happier. It is all about balance. One beer. Not more. One latte. Not more. And certainly not zero :) And concentrating on one thing surely is not the right path for me, I just don't see it as a healthy option. After all, I see minimalism as something airy and light. Not heavy and consuming. It can be applied to our thoughts as well... If we get ''addicted'' to decluttering, isn't that consuming too? Consuming the pleasure of letting go? Consuming the feelings we get from it, of accomplishment? Thank you again for the wonderful and thought - provoking video
Long-time minimalist here, but enjoying your content. One thing to consider for the bed is some low wooden slats as a base - I used to have a frame that was a couple of inches high and foldable, but allowed air to circulate underneath the mattress to avoid moisture and mould. Another is a true Japanese futon, to be folded up each morning. Minimalism should be a tool and not a destination. Transitioning to minimalism may take a lot of thought, but I completely agree that it's not something that should be consuming all one's thoughts after the initial transition (just needing occasional maintenance / fine-tuning).
Haven’t been to my local coffee stand in two weeks in an effort to cut down on caffeine. Don’t miss the coffee ass much as I miss the social interaction lol great video
@@NicholasGarofola please do! Also understand about the bed frame issue. Tried to go without for a while but wasn’t for me. My version of minimalism includes a bed frame lol
I'm asking the same question about the frame bed, and I would like to sleep on the floor, but I'm having trouble on giving up to my frame bed, because, it was expensive and took me time save the money for it, on another hand, I have the illusion of what other people think about, like my parents, well, I'll take my time and in a certain moment I'll do what I really want. Your video has inspired me to take that decision quicker, THANKS so Much for sharing 🍀🍀🍀
One rule I like to follow with situations like 'latte' or eating at restaurants, if its with friends, eating out is ok, otherwise I will make it myself. I make exceptions for once or twice a week treat or if I have a 'cleaning' then ordering Uber is ok
On the bed frame topic having a bed frame is better for your mattress. However a low simple bed frame without extra storage would be minimal and not encouraging stashing things away
Love your work n videos ! the bedframe thing is because some places are way too humid. The floor gets wet sometimes at night due to the condensation and the mattress will get mold, and that can have serious effects on the respiratory system.
Your last point really resonated with me! In the beginning stages of my minimalism journey it was all I could think of. Now it's just part of my values, the way I prefer doing things. Loved the video! 😊
Yes..so right. After listening to you I realise that I am heading in that direction... like an obsessive compulsive need to declutter and to own less and less.... help 😷
One class I was on budgeting and always started off with an open ended topic; 'Needs vs. Wants.' Going to the extreme on being a minimalist I have to keep myself in check to not become obsessed with it. I'd find myself at times just going through the house seeking stuff to get rid of and honestly for apparent reason. So realizing this, I gave myself a good talking to. Thank you Nicholas! As always informative videos.
When it comes to mattress on the floor, it's not good for air circulation. During the night, we give out heat and sweat and mattress absorbs some of it and becomes little moist. Perfect conditions for all those little creatures that live inside mattresses! And besides the gross mattress, floor can get damaged too. So it's better to lift your mattress, air it out.
I used to have my mattress on the floor years ago, but now I’m afraid of bugs. I recently sold my huge wood bed frame for $140 & bought a smaller metal platform one for $120. The look of empty space under it tricks my brain to make the room look bigger. I couldn’t tell you the last time I bought a coffee or matcha out, maybe 8 months ago.
Bed frames are important. If you leave your mattress on the floor it will get moldy on the bottom. Lifting it a few inches off the ground encourages airflow.
My journey with minimalism purely stained my idea on decluttering every single thing that I owned, if it were something I enjoyed or was essential to me. It’s a scary hole to fall in! Thanks so much for this video, I now have a lighter idea on my own minimalist journey! 🤍
For me as i am older need a bed frame. As one ages you have more trouble getting up from the floor. The latte I will make at home as i dont drink mine as strong as they are made in coffee shops. However, if it brings you pleasure and joy to buy a latte do so because life is short.
When minimalism becomes stressful or something you feel is making you not feel good you are doing it wrong .It’s not about getting rid of all your stuff but minimalize what you need and what you don’t need .
Our bed is way off the floor, but because we like it that way, that being said I see nothing wrong with the bed being on the floor. Cleaning under a bed is a pain in the rear!
Once my daughters get of age and decide to move out and be on their own, I will be doing minimalism. It’s something I would love to do but having a teenager and a 10 year it’s almost impossible to be minimal the way i want. I can’t wait.
you could try minimizing your own "space" meaning your personal stuff..and set an area where it will be free of clutter..no need to wait if that's what you really want..
however, in the 80s when I discovered futons, I thought, now I can get rid of the bedframe. I soon realised in damp old London that a good bed frame can help one air out the mattress and stop it going mouldy. I remember once turning the mattress and finding it a little green underneath, I went back to a bedframe the next day. Some items have a reason to exist which only experience can teach us.
I have not regretted of anything i decluttered once since i became a minimalist (3yrs). you just need to take it slowly and get rid of anything when you are ready to it let go dont force yourself just because you think you need to get rid of it for the sake of becoming a minimalist.
Good video. Expresses how silly it is to take minimalism too far. We need a bed and some other things for convenience and comfort. People who say we don't are likely to be lying to make you feel guilty Nicholas for having even the little you have and aiming to make a person go as bare as possible with decluttering.
I have a pretty simple way of living myself. I feel I have everything a need and I don’t need to possess like everybody else. I changed my mattress recently because the previous one was old. I slept with the mattress directly on the floor for a moment. Then, I received my bed frame and I really notice a difference in confort. To me, that furniture is essential :)
I do admit it is still an obsession but i still have a lot of stuff. And i am home all day and am highly sensitive. The anxiety from things is real and if you add other stress to it i dont think there is anything wrong with considering mental health vs other benefits from items and weighing it that way. The benefit that comes from a minimal room for the mind is hard to compete with the value or any other benefit of items. It is hard for someone who has been collector all their life like me to dramatically change, but im getting there.
I had a living relationship with a french person and his bed was down the floor like as you said and phone free and closed curtains and AC or Fan depends on the temp and it was heavenly
