  • Visiting the Capital of Texas can be an amazing experience, from drinking the night away at homes that have been turned in to bars on Rainey Street, to listening to music on 6th to exploring the cool and weird shops on South Congress. And don't forget eating to your heart's content at Torchy's Tacos or one of the hundreds of food trucks around Austin. But there are some things you don't do when you come to Austin and this video covers the Don'ts of Visiting Austin, Texas.

The best way to eat tacos in Austin is to drive 45 minutes south to the better city of San Antonio and eat their tacos. Austin tacos suck compared to San Antonio, try Tommy's barbacoa and big red!

Here’s my addendum for their video...
    1. They’re called natives not locals. People who moved from the east and the west coast desperately try and call themselves locals because they have something to prove.
    2. There are still plenty of natives in Austin, we just don’t live downtown because it’s too expensive. Tech companies are the ones who brought in folks from the coasts and pushed all the natives to the outskirts because our old jobs didn’t pay enough for the fancy expensive new condos they built downtown.
    3. Food trucks are nice if you have tons of money to blow but after a while $15 for a burger or sandwich from a truck gets old.
    4. Franklins is a tourist trap that we set up to ensnare all the tourists and keep the lines shorter at all the other BBQ places we keep secret from them!😈
    5. ITS NOT CALLED EAST 6th, it’s DIRTY 6th!!! East 6th is something different than what they’re referring to, it’s east of 35.
    6. “Keep Austin Weird,” doesn’t literally mean keep it weird in the sense that tourists think. It was an ad campaign in the 90’s to encourage you to buy local. The old hippie weird vibe is dying off and is being replaced with imported hipster weird. While still fun, it just feels like it’s manufactured and some are trying too hard

I was born and raised in Austin, and I just have to say that the locals born in Austin really do support Keep Austin Weird. The majority of the time, I buy stuff from local businesses. And if you eat at like Torchy's, Chuy's, Rudy's, and Terry Black's, you are eating at a local business. The idea behind it is to support the little guy, not the big corporate business. Also, I advise not going to 6th street. There is a reason why the locals call it Dirty Sixth. It smells, even during the day it smells.

As a native 42 year old “unicorn” Austinite who has always lived here and seen Austin grow up around me; this video is pretty spot-on. Most of the “don’t move here” types are younger and still coming to grips with how “their” Austin has changed. I’ve seen Austin reinvent itself 5 times over now. It has always been a great place, but always had some issues like every other place.
Some of this historical information in this video is slightly off, but I’m not here for pedantry and it was more accurate than inaccurate.
If you’re from out of state and love US history, I’ll add there’s and outstanding WWII (Pacific War) museum in Fredericksburg. It’s what I’d call a “postgraduate-class” museum based on the depth of material there.

Another Don’t you forgot is..... DON’T MOVE HERE!!!.....as a born and bred Austinite I have seen the town change for the better and especially for the worse, the worse being all the freaking people that move here and try to change it with their corporate garbage and rude attitude. There have been so many small businesses that had their place shut down to make way for all the condominiums and corporate stores you can find anywhere else, thus killing that classic Austin spirit and look. In addition, if you meet an actual Austin local, you’ll find that they are much more polite than any of these people who move here from the Midwest or California. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Austin, it is a great place, but it just annoys me to see such a great place become exploited at the level it has.

Don't drive when it rains, accidents are heavy even for smallest drizzle, all traffic end up on ih35 a smallest accident on ih 35 might cause hours of delay so there is a potential chance you might miss your flight, you will not get parking at airport during festivities, plastic bags are banned at grocery stores you will be paying extra for paper bags, you need to be prepared for a good sales tax when you dine, Austin has lots of allergants like cedar pollen mold bring your allergy tablets, else you will be sneezing stuffed nose and will have watery eyes, be careful on grass ticks are common we don't want you getting bit, you can see a lot of strange animals possums, armadillo, bats, scorpion, snakes common. Native Austin people no longer can afford to live with high property taxes and cost of living. I lived in both the SF Bay Area and New York City without complaints, and I wasn’t making a super-high income, and I was paying full rent on my own. The only reason why I am living in Sydney now for a little bit is to experience something different. Nothing to do with cost of living and homelessness. Both are still a problem in Australia too, though not at the level of the us.
Tokyo had no homeless. At most, I only saw five, and they were all just in an underpass. Also, cost of living there is a lot cheaper as food and rent are cheaper. Salaries are around the same as American salaries too. I spent a week there, and it is by far my second favorite country that I visited in Asia after Singapore. Move to Tokyo.

Have they not caught up to the case studies that have taught us modern urban planners that building expressways to cut up a city brings urban blight and inequality? So building something like a bicycle friendly city like Seattle and Philadelphia was not an idea for them? Or building something like DART? The best they could come up with was a tired ass 1950s urban plan? How is that going for people of Los Angeles? I hear they can walk ten miles faster than the car sitting in traffic. Oh there is an idea, lets make the city pedestrian friendly...NOT.

Remembering what used to be. :( But that nasty Pizza Hut is still on the corner of Guadalupe and MLK. First job I ever walked out on.

most of my friends from "the good old days" have moved out of travis county...what used to be??..mad dogs and beans....split rail...soapcreek salon....stallion restaurant.... grok books.....saferway.....the juice factory..... patos tacos.....sure all things change... but for a while in austin it seemed they would change for the better, but alas, such is not the case....we (humans) seem to have an ongoing battle with nature and must grow congestion, traffic, paved roads, crowded cities...blah blah blah....do i sound like an old fogie?.....i am but it is still town lake not lady bird

I finally moved out of Austin after living there since the early 1990's. I started noticing the changes when Les Amis closed, then the independent bookstores and record stores on The Drag started closing. I loved that South Congress got cleaned up and became more active, but since around 2005, the old funkiness, the no frills, battered but cool vibe of the city seems like it's nearly extinct. Keep Austin Weird now just feels like What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas. I'm glad I got to experience the "Slacker" era of Austin, and I have lots of great memories, but it definitely feels like a more normal city now.

Good video! I lived in Austin for three years. The public transportation isn’t so bad; it all depends on where you’re going. Also, I would add don’t mess with the beggars on the drag. One cool thing about Austin is how different all the areas are! Outdoorsy stuff during the spring and summer are awesome here (except in late July/August because of the heat!).

Here are "the don'ts of visiting Austin" according to the video:
    1. Don't freak out about the bats because there are a lot of bats in Austin.
    2. Don't expect to see the bats from November to February because the bats return to Mexico.
    3. Don't visit Austin during a festival if you're not going to visit the festival (e.g. SXSW) because hotels will be more expensive and it will be more packed.
    4. Don't drive in Austin because traffic is a pain and same with parking.
    5. Don't count on public transportation to get you everywhere you want to go.
    6. Don't be afraid to Uber everywhere you want to go because Uber is great in Austin.
    7. Don't speed because the cops in Austin will pull you over for going over just 5 mph.
    8. Don't come to Austin on a diet because Austin has great food.
    9. Don't be a snob about food trucks because there are tons of great food trucks in Austin.
    10. Don't eat breakfast in your hotel, but instead go and grab a breakfast taco anywhere in Austin.
    11. Don't think price is the only indicator of quality because there is a lot of good cheap food in Austin.
    12. Don't fall for the "keep Austin weird" vibe. It's mostly just a marketing slogan to get you to pay more.
    13. Don't go to a BBQ place that doesn't have a line because all the good ones have lines.
    14. Don't worry about having a good time because Austin is fun with tons of things to do.
    15. Don't expect to find a lot of locals from Austin because many people in Austin aren't actually from Austin.
    16. Don't expect live music everywhere because it's concentrated in certain areas of Austin.
    17. Don't be surprised by the beggars.

Austin has a shitty public transportation. I had been to big cities with awesome public transportation that actually covers the entire city. Why is Texas public transportation such crap? Even Dallas’ dart doesn’t cover the entire Dallas area
New York City subway covers all of New York City.
Sydney metro covers all of Sydney.
BART in sfo Bay Area is crap as it doesn’t help you get everywhere you need.

DO NOT MOVE TO AUSTIN. Over populated, failing infrastructure, worse traffic than LA, increasing air pollution, summertime is from May - Oct with temperatures well above 95 (100s in Jun/JulAug/Sept extremely high humidity), becoming more and more expensive (though you get less and less), parking sucks, and the population is becoming less and less friendly. I have lived here for the past 25+ years. Trust me. It has changed for the worse.

I need some advice. I'm from Scotland and am doing a roadtrip late April/early may. Houston, Galveston, corpus Christi, spi, San Antonio, Austin and back to Houston. 15 nights. Mark said don't take your car (rental) into Austin. What would you recommend? Hotel/motel on the city outskirts then über??? Thanx in advance.

I’m from Dallas so heading down to Austin for the first time was very exciting.
