WoW! A man after my very heart!!! I am an absolute microphone FANATIC !!! Been that way for 62 years, and it's only getting WORSE! Had some recent experience in mic modding and I love it!! What you taught me today has been a true GOD send!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Dave.
Upgraded a mic with parts from Microphone Parts years ago. Now looking at doing another and came across JLI and Kingkorgs posts on DIY group. MP definitely gets business just because their upgrade kits are really straightforward and the capsules are compared to other well known mics. I’ll be searching the internet to find popular mods with JLI capsules and what sound can be achieved. Lucky me ordered an AKG 420 that kingkorg swapped one capacitor in and achieved a Neumann u87 like performance. Definitely a wealth of knowledge in that chat. Thanks for your informative video and clarification of the quality of capsules available.
There is a great video by Jim lil a few actually that tests where does mic sound come from and 90% of it was the capsule, the other 10 was capacitors mostly and he said some mics have built in eq he tested them in and out of the mic, very methodical videos he also has where does guitar tone and cab tone come from video.
im using a $500 dollar senhiezer profi stage mic i found in the neighbors trash when they moved out, and i got lucky because it sounds great. i got a cheap condenser mic with a package deal and the circut is smaller than a postage stamp, the cap is horible, it picks up noise like an AM radio, no post processing can clean the noise. im going to rebuild it with proper parts this video was very usefull
I had soldered the rk 47 to my g7 build as I was reaching for the headbasket on the bench beside me my armrest caught the cable and it pulled it off the desk it landed head first and warped the diaphram on both sides, my soul hasnt come back yet.
Great video on a really interesting subject. Those capsules from JLI are really affordable. I did a DIY U87 project 5 years ago with the help of my brother who was a tech at circuit city for 20 years. Got body, etc from studio939 and bought a Beesneez K8 Capsule direct (took forever to get but it sounded great) I spent about $750 and used it sparingly but sold it last year for about $650 so I got my moneys worth I feel.
Thank you Bill! You've been to the belly of the DIY beast. The 87 build. And you lived to tell the tale and walked away clean. Kudos! How'd you like that K8?

I’m looking to upgrade the k67 capsule in my WA8000 mic. I’m willing to spend a couple hundred bucks so I can install the new cap and make some music. Been looking at a few of the recommendations for vendors from this video and not sure which would be the safest bet in terms of quality 🤔 a few places don’t seem to stock the k67
My suggestion would be to first contact Arienne at ArienneAudio.com and tell her what you’re looking for. She recently had some k87’s that had a Sony C800 style top end. She may still have a few.
Unfortunately, you’re not alone. I think there’s a whole thread on GDIY about it. Although some people claim that you can find them under their other name: Desheng.
Thanks. I got to your vid because I was looking at a JLI capsule. Unfortunately they cost a fortune to ship to Canada. $65 to send a $13 capsule here. 😱
I just put a JLI TSC-2 capsule in my Dany Bouchard build. I was surprised to realize that the backplates of the TSC-2 aren’t isolated so I can’t use the Figure 8 pattern. Omni and Cardiod work. It doesn’t seem to be as sensitive in that circuit as the Arienne Audio 87 capsule I took out of it (I’ll be putting that into an HL-95 with the Fuchs circuit when my PCB arrives in the mail). Does JLI sell an 87 capsule that has isolated back plates that you know of?
I don't think they do sell an isolated backplate 87 capsule. I did buy one a few months back off Aliexpress for my stereo 87 project. I believe it was this one: www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804948379738.html?channel=twinner I only bought it as a placeholder, but it's not bad. However, I can't speak of consistency from unit to unit.
Thanks!. I need a wonderful mic. For recording violin, voice, saxophone, bass and acoustic guitar. I have a condenser mic with suspension but it is 1/4 inch element disguised as large diapgharm condenser. Would Nady be any good? Rode? Royer? I need something affordable durable reliable with impecable sensitivity. Am i asking too much? Would an old R.C.A. be practical? Or would a modern ribbon mic. Be better choice? Thanks for any help.
